The Suzuki Swift has been updated! While most of the 2020 Suzuki Swift range gets styling changes, the 2020 Suzuki Swift Sport Series II just gets a new colour and a couple of minor interior changes. Is it enough to take it to the Ford Fiesta ST and the Volkswagen Polo GTI? Paul Maric finds out! It's also known as a Maruti Suzuki Swift Sport in India!

  • I’m 6 months into ownership of my 3rd Swift Sport. They ain’t perfect but they score highly for me for their reliability, practicality and their ability to turn even suburban driving into a fun experience. Here in NZ the price increase of the current model was only about $1,500 over the outgoing one, from memory, and you get a lot more torque and kit for your bucks. I’m enjoying its slightly larger interior, the additional safety kit, the touch screen and the huge torque increase. I could care less about scratchy plastics (don’t touch ‘em much), but I wish Suzuki had sacrificed some weight loss for better sound deadening at highway speeds.

    • Steve Robinson You are 100% correct. I've had 2 Swift Sports, the current one and the last N/A ZC32S version. I even owned a 1993 Swift GTI and 1996 Baleno GTX. With all these all I remember the great driving experiences and couldn't even tell you what the Interior was like. If you are looking / worrying about the Interior you're not driving fast enough.

    • Have you still got your swift? Im looking at buying one here in NZ, i just dont knw if its worth the "upgrade" from a 2018 to a 2021 brand new? 2018 with lets say around 30k kms go for like 23k 24k? Brand new is around 30k, pretty big jump id say. What is all changed on the 2021 vs 2018 model?? Is it worth the extra money? Thanks

    • let me start ruining your mood by issue of suzuki swift sport lest gen. Has GDI engine will leads to carbon buildup leads to massive bill repair if left untreated. And it's hybrid car now, so you dont wanna meet the time of battery replacement. So reliability has kinda lost there at the lest gen. GET the manual, because auto-transmission is horrible bad in terms of reliability. I still own the 2016 1.6 one.

  • I absolutely love my 2023 Swift Sport auto. The torque & power to weight ratio is amazing. Such a FUN car on windy mountain roads. Suspension is firm but not uncomfortable. The seats are superb. A perfect daily driver. It's a great looking car from every angle. I couldn't give a shit about "hard plastics". The four things I would improve are: 1. Add a spare wheel. 2. Improve sound insulation. 3. Add a centre console. 4. Give the exhaust note more character.

  • In the Netherlands the Swift is €25k vs the fiesta ST €38k and the polo GTI €38.5K (Same trim when u look at specs) This is due to our taxes on cars are made with the c02 output. So the swift hybrid makes a lot of sense.

    @ElcodeBruijn@ElcodeBruijn2 жыл бұрын
    • It's funny how this "hybrid" battery only helps with start-stop and some edge case scenarios, but it's still enough for the government to close their eyes and say "yes, that's a very eco friendly car".

  • I've got one of these in a manual. The road test on the open road is all wrong, what it really is, is an inner city street fighter. They duck and dive in traffic, wins at the lights, hold the gears 0-80K and they are so much fun to accelerate. Out on the open road I'd agree its a bit unrefined and unimpressive,. I choose ours because it was only fun, affordable small car I could still buy in a manual, the best replacement for an ageing 2.0 litre Mazda 3. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it (around town like a lunatic).

    • Totally agree with your take Kyle. I got one as it's (for me) the perfect "around town warrior". 90% of my driving is around the city or short journeys sub 2hrs to nearby towns, often on fairly winding roads. Here in NZ the roads are fairly crap, and I found the higher end "proper" hot hatches that I tested (used Peugeot 308 GTI 270, Megane RS, and Astra VXR all for similar price to a new Swift) were too harsh and cumbersome around town. I also tried the 595 Competizione Fiat but that was just horrendous in terms of comfort. Sure they are all better when you really rip into it and have the right road, but what makes the manual Swift so great is the way you can drive it around town. It's quick enough and has sufficiently good handling to be fun when I need it, but can also settle down to be a comfortable and sensible commuter. For that kind of driving the manual Swift Sport is perfect - provided you can live with the relatively small boot and interior dimensions. I've got a beat up old 4x4 for long road trips, skiing holidays, taking the dog out etc so the Swift is the perfect "80/20" car for me. I do agree that the pricing has gone up a bit too much on these, but then again the dealer I got mine from has excellent bundled servicing at no extra cost (5 year servicing, 5 years WOF/vehicle safety check etc) so it worked out ok. This is doubly so when a new Polo GTI costs $40k NZD, and you can't even get a Fiesta ST for love nor money.

  • The thing about Suzuki is that it is a no nonsense brand. The hard to touch platstics are in areas you actually never touch. All the equipment you touch, from the seat, to the steering wheel, to the arm rest all feel comfortable and soft. Suzuki is a brand that mostly does function over style with the Sport version here making some minor styling exceptions, which I personally like. Also, the buttons, handles and levers all feel snappy and with durable quality. Suzuki makes engines as reliable as Toyota, and while they may lack that luxery finesse honestly when actually using Suzuki's you never feel like you miss those luxery materials as all you interact with feels sturdy and high quality. The only negative of this model is the price, as the old ZC32S was much cheaper when bought new.

  • Just discovered this channel and subscribed. I have 2019 one of these and love it. A manual would be much better for the type of driving you enjoy. Hard plastics are of no concern but I’d back it’s reliability against its rivals. Pricing world wide seems to vary a lot. Here in NZ it cost me $Nz 29000 whereas a polo of same spec and a fiesta are at least $5000 dearer. In the UK it was initially 18000 pound which was nearly $36000 NZ. I don’t think it should be thought of a hot hatch rather a warmed up small car with tons of torque for passing and on the highway. Agree with you about road noise over 100ks, due to Continental tyres. Finally I like your reviews as opposed to the puffery of many so called experts. Even if I don’t always agree with you at least you have an opinion which you give both positive negative.

  • Just some reactions for this Paul, so much negative comments for this Swift but the problem is, you're expecting too much from a cheap, hot hatch-ish car that still ticks the right boxes. Agree as well, might be not as fascinating as the VW or Ford but hey, at least it'll last hella longer than the two competitors especially if we're talking about reliability(sorry Fiesta, I'm badly referring to you on this one). Overall for a car this size and price, I don't see any major letdown for anyone not to settle for a Swift Sport. Not the best but it definitely far from being the worst. Good review nevertheless, am always tuned in to your reviews 👌 P.S. Pajero Sport over the Everest any day, might not have all that excess luxury of the Ford but at least it has the right amount of everything with peace of mind that it'll really last longer 😁

      @yanni6969@yanni69693 жыл бұрын
    • I agree and a buyer for the Swift Sport may not be looking for interior / quality trim and finish etc...! It’s intention, I believe was and still is a Sports car that is no frills, fun and with an affordable price tag. I often hear people comparing built quality of an A Class to say a Toyota Corolla, when they should be comparing apples to an apple.. I would take reliability over quality any day but that’s my opinion. Great review nevertheless 👍🏻

    • What I don't get with Ford is the quality of a EUDM Fiesta is heaps better than a USDM version. (I am talking about the MK7, not the MK8 since normal cars are no longer a thing in the US because they all have an insecurity complex, J/K) How? Then again, BMW, VW and Mercedes have the same thing.

  • Polo GTi is now over $40K and comes with a 2 litre engine that came from it's bigger brother the Golf GTi so I don't think it really is a fair comparison with a Suzuki Sport. Ford Fiesta ST is also a premium Euro Hot Hatch which in the past competed with the Peugeot 208 GTi, I guess on performance the Suzuki Sport may not have a Japanese, Korean or Chinese rival so as a Japanese light performance it is therefore in a class of its own.

TBH I love this car, we don't have it in sunny Seychelles which is too bad, we do have the less sportier version and for a small island, I think it's quite adequate, I use to own the less powerful previous version 1.2 L 2014 Swift, I loved it as it was adequate, we don't have massive roads and motorways, but there are quite a bit of bands and going around in mine was a treat, nowadays I own a 2017 Hyundai i20, it is more comfortable and has a 1.4L engine which is a step up but lacks the Swift's handling and athletism, I kind of miss that, I may consider the new Swift as my next car as VW Golf, or Ford Focus is not common here.

  • I own a Suzuki Swift Sport , but the previous model (the 1.6L naturally aspirated 136cv). I bought it brand new 0km for 17.500€ , so cheaper than this one. This is a good car for the price, but this guy is right, the engine and stock exhaust noise are pretty bad. But once you give it some upgrades like an exhaust and a good air filter, it starts to be a pretty good. I gave mine some more upgrades for trackdays (big brake, engine map, semi slick...) and now it is really good (because very light weigh and good chassis), and can compete with much more expensive cars like clio RS. Suzuki has never followed up with the G13B which is such a shame. The 1.4 BoosterJet is a great engine but in relative terms the 1.4 BoosterJet is a "do everything" type of engine whereas the G13B was performance specific and very unique for it's time. With the relentless cost cutting, tight wad Osamu Suzuki finally having retired, I hope the new leadership of Suzuki have the vision to recapture the performance side of the company which has laid dormant since the discontinuing of the Swift GTi.

  • I took a quick look at some Suzuki websites here in the EU. We can only have Swift Sport with 1.4 BoosterJet Hybrid. Prices quite vary depending on country from about 20k to 24k €, which is in my opinion too much for such a small car. Anyway, I don't mind. I do mind though that we can't buy Jimny here anymore (axed because of emmissions), asking why Suzuki doesn't fit the same engine there (already used in Swift, Vitara, and SX4 S-Cross; Ignis has smaller 1.2 BJ Hybrid).

    @CarMojo@CarMojo3 жыл бұрын
    • They're working on precisely that, the newest Jimny will be fitted with an emissions compliant new power plant including 48 volt mild hybrid assist. Took a bit of re-configuring to fit in the Jimny engine bay. I just hope they factor-in a bit better highway performance with the re-fit since the previous Jimny was miserable at highway speeds, a combination of the gearing and and tiny engine, the revs up around 4000 rpm. I guess we will have to wait and see.

  • Excellent Hot Hatch ... Pricing point is spot on at or under $30K ... anything above that enters performance hatch territory. The previous Fiesta ST was king of the hill and under $29K drive away - the new one is FAR too expensive - I don't care what extra creature comforts, bells and whistles it has ... If your testing a hot hatch - forget the auto ... manual!! Also cheap and cheerful performance is the mantra of a hot hatch - don't expect plush living or you'll pay the price the Fiesta did. Cars evolve one of two ways from that point ... The manufacture listens too much to the "critics" and "softens" it up ... adds a load of extra "Features" ... but the price goes up - breaks the "Hot Hatch" pricing barrier ... or ... the pricing stays the same - and the extra "Features" come at the expense of decent performance and you lose the "Hot" part of the deal ... You cannot have everything ... I'd rather have a purpose built Hot Hatch any day.

The lightweight and turbo power really make all the difference. Obviously coilovers to get rid of that ugly wheel gap.

A lot of people overlooked the effect of a lightweight car. This car weights the same as a Nd Miata yet seats 5 and boot space. But gonna admit the interior is not as nice but rather practical.

  • So I have the previous (pre-Update) model of the swift sport auto. Purchased in Feb 2020 and now at approx 8000Km. One of the things about the swift that is different to its peers is the design just doesn’t try to be upmarket/Luxo/euro. It is about simplicity, usability and lightness. The plastics are hard and basic - there isn’t a centre console and a heap of cabin appointments that you would expect in more premium brands / higher price points. This has always been the case with the swift. My 2005 model is exactly the same. The point is that this simplicity means that the car is light, economical, accelerates well and handles beautifully. It’s a different balance than the Ford or VW. I looked at all the options before going for the swift, purely based on its ability to generate smiles. It’s a fun car that has you coming up with meaningless excuses just to go for a drive. The increased price is a concern, but give it a few months post launch and there will be discounts.

If you have a tyre issue out in the country somewhere you're buggered. The Tyre Repair Kit won't solve sidewall damage. Additionally, the Sealant in the Tyre Repair Kit has a limited shelf life. Naturally the Sealant isn't sold separately, you have to buy an entire new Tyre Repair Kit, which is very expensive.
