Does ALCOHOL help with SPEAKING DUTCH?

Experiment: what is the effect of drinking alcohol on speaking a second language?
These students of Dutch do some role plays, while drinking 'jenever' (Dutch gin).
Will they speak better Dutch or worse as the alcohol consumption increases?
In Dutch, strong liquor is sometimes called 'spraakwater', in other words: water that makes people speak.
Let's find out if that's true!
This video was recorded with students of the BLC Dutch Winter School.
In this video, we refer to a study that has been published by British and Dutch researchers
(Maastricht University, the University of Liverpool, King's College London) in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.
This study shows that a low doses of alcohol improves the speakers' ability to speak a foreign language.

Disclaimer:
The main purpose of our experiment was entertainment (to make a fun video).
Unlike the study mentioned above, our informal experiment cannot be seen as scientific evidence.
We believe that when someone feels comfortable, they are not afraid
to make mistakes and will find speaking a second language easier (regardless of using alcohol or not).
If you drink alcohol, drink responsibly. Heavy alcohol consumption has no benefits. It won't help you to speak Dutch.

      @ohhi5237@ohhi52374 жыл бұрын
    • @@ohhi5237 Yeah, I didn’t say it relaxes you, I meant that it takes away your inhibitions. What you said explains it perfectly. Since you think slower under the influence of alcohol, you don’t stop to think before doing something. In that way, if you drink alcohol and then try to speak a foreign language you’ve been studying, perhaps you stop to think about what you will say less and just spit it out more. It isn’t that a person is particularly bad at a language, more that they’re hesitant to make mistakes, but when intoxicated that hesitation is halted.

    • @@mariaflower2050 Ergens wel. Over drugs gesproken: Zowel LSD als MDMA werden initieel als psychiatrische medicijnen toegepast. MDMA (meest prominente stof in XTC tabletten) is pas later een uitgaansdrug zoals alcohol geworden. Alhoewel ik zelf geen ervaring heb met XTC, zou ik het niet aanraden als je bv. depressief bent, aangezien het consequent een dip achteraf geeft. Aangezien het bepaalde neutransmitters leegrooft om het simpel uit te drukken. MDMA is niet zoals andere stimulanten (cocaine, caffeine, amfetamines, efedrine, etc.) en antidepressiva een heropnameremmer, het voorkomt niet dat catecholamines worden heropgenomen, het geeft ze gewoon ineens vrij als het ware. Je voelt je dus in principe kiplekker voor een aantal uur, velen beschrijven het als verliefd zijn. (verliefd zijn werkt bijna hetzelfde als drugs in op de hersenen, daarom dat een gebroken hart zo verschrikkelijk aanvoelt, het is als ontwenning; dopamine, fenethylamine-> lichaamseigen speed, etc. gaan gepaard met verliefdheid) Waarna je ongeveer de volgend, volgende dag (noemt men de zogenaamde 'dinsdagdip') heel erg neerslachtig kan geraken. Supplementeren met hydroxytryptofaan zou helpen blijkbaar. Uiteraard zal de dosis ook een groot verschil uitmaken. Met klassieke serotonerge psychedelica daarentegen is dat niet het geval.

  • While this is about speaking in Dutch, there is no emphasis on how to speak with an authentic Dutch accent. As a Dutch-American whose accent in Dutch is less than great, I discovered something that definitely helped me. So, here it is: 1 - Drink the gin as shown in the video; three glasses or more. 2 - Put a small potato in your mouth and chew it up a bit but don't swallow it. 3 - Now, go ahead and speak. You can even throw in some German and English. It really won't matter. But be sure to slur every word. I did this for a group of my cousins in Alkmaar and they all said I suddenly sounded perfectly native. Of course they also had had quite a bit of gin (without the potato)...

The Russian dude was sat next to my father and they had a pretty tough time communicating. I had to translate the German he knew, another person would translate his Arabic and whatever Russian they could understand, while my father could only speak English. But once they got some alcohol into their systems with some beer and vodka, I realized that the language barrier didn't seem as tall anymore. I had no idea how, but my father and this Russian dude he had just met were able to understand one another significantly better, despite a reduced amount of clarity! I wracked my brain over how they could just "get" what the other was trying to say under the influence.

Sober you're unsure about some words, causing you to pause mid sentence. When you're tipsy you might misuse/mispronounce/leave out words, but as long as you reach the end of the sentence, the native speaker will have context and will be able to fill in the gaps.

  • In my own Dutch experience, whenever we get drunk, people often start to talk a whole lot more using their hometowns dialect. Normally people over here in the Netherlands try to speak ABN "Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands" (sorry don't know a good translation) but most cities and towns tend to have their own dialect. For example: the city of Nijmegen and the town Wijchen are neighbors not even 10km apart, but a lot of words with the same meaning will be spoken very differently. Take a few people from each province, get em drunk and pretty soon lots of people will not be able to figure out what the heck the other is talking about. Try making a video about that, should lead to some pretty hilarious and entertaining situations to put up on KZhead.

  • Yeah, that's exactly the problem these students have: They don't speak enough Dutch! Probably most of them can make themselves understood in English. They should speak as much Dutch as possible and not be afraid of making mistakes! People who do not speak Dutch with them should ask them to do so. English or another language should only be used as an exception. Try to give Mr de Pau your instructions in Dutch before the exercises. Always try to make yourself understood in Dutch first and only speak English at the third or fourth attempt. In my experience, the brain adapts to a language. If you speak a foreign language for a while, more and more vocabulary comes to mind and you understand more and more. But if the students keep hearing the English language, this process is interrupted again and again. It is precisely because of the simple grammar that I find Dutch the most suitable for this method! (I am German.) I have also learned that it helps to read or listen to texts in simple Dutch, texts that are actually for children. First of all such texts whose content you already know yourself, such as fairy tales. You don't even have to listen to them consciously - which of course you should do from time to time - the subconscious learns as well! I love the Dutch language and wish everyone here much success! Alcohol is no longer necessary ;-) By the way, I love the Suske en Wiske booklets. The ones I have at home I have read at least 10 times! Every time I discover something new. :-) Translated with www. :-)

  • it really works wonders, haha not overthinking can be a wonderful thing :D when i was learning music (i still am, you never stop learning, now do you? :D), i found that a beer or 2 and smoking a fat one helped me glance over my errors a bit more and just play stuff instead of stressing about it and making things even worse for myself. it goes hand in hand with music too, that's why many musicians are out of their fooking skulls on all kinds of drugs :D considering music is kind of a language, in the form of rhythm almost certainly already "spoken" before we invented spoken word, i could see how this is a thing. there's been quite some tribes out there that cook up some real crazy ritualistic shit :')

  • First off a very entertaining video. Great pick in students for this video. Question would you, or would you not consider a similar video with students getting high smoking a joint. Trying to speak Dutch, smoking a Dutch, how much more Dutch can it get?! I respect everyone's opinion either way✌Is it just my perception or are Dutch people not the front runners anymore on the subject of weed as we once where.....
