    • Hell, I haven't used this method in almost that long. Gar is not a fish I generally target. Bet the newer fine nylon strand ropes would work good though.

    • I remember reading about a similar technique even before that, when I was a teen in the 50s.... The guy used what amounted to a nylon-monofilament “backlash” tangle tied to the end of a crank bait.

  • I grew up fishing with my uncle George who passed away a few years back. Every since I found your page I kept telling myself that you remind me just like him. Could catch the mess out of flatheads, crappie, and bass. He told me about caching gar like this with a rope and then here you go posting a video on that as well.   • I did this many years ago with my dad using nylon clothes line string. I met two gentlemen on the TENNESSEE River with Gar fishing club shirts near Spring Creek. They claimed they eat “Gar Balls”, cut out the back strip of the gar and boil in water till done, then mix with mashed potatoes and form a ball and deep fry. Delicious! Go get em Richard Gene! You the man!

  • As always Richard, another entertaining, informative video. Well done my friend! In Louisiana nearly 50 years ago, we would do something similar only we used a wadded up piece of old torn panty hose with a piece of red yarn to tie it and left a 3 inch piece of it dangling on each side as an attractant. I like the rope much better, it makes a more realistic presentation and we had no choice but to cut the line and sacrifice the panty hose wad. Thank you for all of your efforts in making your wonderful videos.

I'm on the Mississippi Coast.   • Man you are one great fisherman. You can catch anything. I have used rope before to catch gar. Put rope on a hook along with a large minnow but I like this all rope technique much better! Way to go as usual. ROPE is GOOD and REMEMBER its good for YOU!

  • My home state of Arkansas has some gar that are unbelievably massive. 200+ pounders as long as a full grown man. I was bass fishing the Black River one day with white spinner baits and the gar ran me and my friend off the water. No matter where we went along the river, the gar were there, destroying our baits. A spooky, powerful fish. Love RGTFM!
