How Nespresso Is Taking On Keurig In The U.S. Coffee Pod Market
Keurig Dr Pepper is the biggest player in the coffee pod market in the United States with domestic sales estimated to be three times that of its biggest competitor, Nestlé’s Nespresso. However, over the past decade, Nespresso has been steadily gaining market share in America. About a decade ago, Nespresso had to shift its marketing strategy to better appeal to U.S. consumers, whose tastes differ from European coffee drinkers. Internationally, Nespresso saw $7 billion in sales last year, compared to Keurig Dr Pepper's coffee system sales of nearly $5 billion. Analysts say the future may depend on who can best appeal to the coffee habits of Gen Z.

How Nespresso Is Taking On Keurig In The U.S. Coffee Pod Market
Nepresso coffees taste way better than any of the Keurig coffees; good flavors and not watered down. I used to own a Keurig machine until one day I went to visit my friends and they offered me a Nepresso coffee. From then, I gave away my Keurig and got myself a Nepresso machine.
I remember on a business trip my hotel room had a nepresso, all of us staying at the same hotel thought the coffee was wonderful. Kurig isn’t even close
I have both, it's all about what you put in it.
And you’re still paying hundreds of dollars for those coffee pods because buying their machine alone wasn’t enough money for them to make.. Those coffee pods you buy make you a lifetime subscriber.

Keurig coffee is substandard quality. Many times it’s offered in the hotels I stay at, which is always a major disappointment. Nespresso coffee is much better and co distant quality!
Keurig is for people who like hot water flavored coffee.

I bought 3 different Keurig machines thinking they were defective the coffee tasted watery no matter what pod I used. Finally invested in a Nespresso and I looove it. The pods are definitely more expensive and harder to find but the difference is huge. To each its own, I do however like stronger coffee but I agree they are both for different types of audience.
But. How much money and time did you waste on the 3 Keurig machines vs. one that works from Nespresso! ?
you'll be even more surprised to find out that coffee tastes much better when it's fresh (whetehr it's long or espresso). If you really like espresso coffee, espresso machines would give you the optimal experience and taste. But I understand that Nespresso can be a more convenient choice if you just want your coffee to be ready in one minute.
I may be among the minority but I have found exactly what I like down to the creamer and how to prepare certain coffees. I’m enjoying the Keurig. It’s milder coffee and the creaminess comes from either adding a little warm milk or your choice of creamer to the coffees. Hot chocolate also turns out great with some added warm milk. I bought the commercial K155 and hope it lasts longer than the home models but so far so good. I’m happy. With the Nespresso, I find myself having to add way more milk to make the coffee palatable and most coffees taste the same.
@@Victoria-bl4tw Ditto. We have a Keurig, I use the Starbucks pods with the Blue Diamond Almond Breeze non dairy vanilla creamer. I love it, but it's suddenly getting EXTREMELY hard to find that specific creamer. (Are you listening, HP Hood?) The Chobani is close to the Almond Breeze but it's #2 for me.
Keurig exists for convenience. Nespresso is an entry into the coffee enthusiast market. Most Americans take coffee for purpose (caffeine) rather than taste like Europeans do. They are completely different markets.
There's a similar difference between the USA and Canadian market: Americans take coffee for caffeine, Canadians take coffee to stop from freezing.

I’m in Europe now and just purchased around 36 sleeves of Nespresso to take home to the US. I estimate it’s around 25-30% cheaper in Europe. The mark up in the US is too much!
Nespresso is lawsuit happy in the US, that's why we don't have cheaper pods because they try to sue every compatible pod maker out of existence.
I had a Keurig for 2 years then moved to Nespresso, the quality difference is mind blowing, the Keurig really is like dirty water, probably what you would get after reusing a Nespresso pod a few times and leaving the coffee out for a few days, it is that bad. The Nespresso is just wonderful.
Same here. My Keurig just collects dust and nowadays I kick myself when thinking how much money I wasted on Dunkin and Starbucks espresso drinks.
Honestly after using both they taste the same, but each their own… personally I prefer the keurig as there’s more of a variety of coffee pods compared to nescafe with their limited selection
I Agree, the Nespresso is better, tastes better, lasts longer. I had 2 Keurigs that I loved at first, but both broke after little over a year. The pin or needle that puncures the pod broke on both Keurigs. I've had the Nespresso for 5 years and I love it. However, the pods are expensive and there is no real alternative. I just recenlty put the Nespresso away and switched back to normal coffee.

I purchased the Nespresso Citiz in 2013, and she is still working after 10 years. Last year, we purchased a Breville Espresso machine, and we love it.

I have Breville Espresso machine at home and my workplace has Keurig machine. I like Espresso better, you get stronger taste of coffee even if you dilute it and it's cheaper per cup since the bean is much cheaper than pod. It's not even difficult to remove the ground.

It’s all about the foam. In my 18-20’s my mom got a keurig when it first came out, now I’m 32 and the nespresso is on point with flavor and correct boldness.

I'm American, Keurig coffee is just good as coffee you can buy at a 24/7 petrol station. Americans just wanna buy expensive crap on credit card that comes in lots plastic packaging.
Buy the coffee beans, grind it yourself, then put it in basic coffee maker. Need a single cup, buy a pour over coffee cone. Save yourself tons of money and get way better coffee than Starsucks.

I am obsessed with Iced coffee (i'd call it iced americano.) been a regular with nesrpesso vertuo for two three years now. Their double espresso/gran lungo sizes are great for making iced coffee. Cant wait to see what they are going to do next to step up their iced coffee game.

@@FengG0 I avoid it but I have in the past. However if I learn a product is one owned by them I will not get it again and search for a replacement brand. I am aware that a few people doing this won't hurt them but if I can't solve the problem, my next option is to not add to the problem.
@@IndianaDiy I like to buy local stuff made by the owner of the shop and I make several things and do my best to sell them for as close to (and often less than) commercial prices (i.e. coffee and organic vegetables). I think more people should try to do the same and weaken the hold that corporations like Nestle has on the community
I used to drink pod coffee, but later decided it would be cheaper to buy an automatic bean-to-cup machine since I drink coffee every day. I have had my Jura for 6 years now and haven't looked back. The coffee is much better, there is no needless waste, and the per cup price is much lower.
pods are expensive in the long run, I Love my automatic coffee machine, 4 times the price than the keurig but much better coffee quality and build quality of the machine

Had Keurig, both Nespresso machines but currently love my Phillips espresso auto machine, fresh ground is the way to go.
I wanted a kureg type machine when i went to college, but i tried it ONCE and it tasted like watered down coffee. 5 years later, i finally brought The nespresso as i am in medical school and i spend way to much time finding coffee when i want it. I took a risk as Ive never had nespresso before buying it. I absolutely love it. The coffee tastes strong. I think thats why i love it better than kureg
I have 2 Nespresso machines and have really liked them but recently bought the DeLonghi True brew and that is a real game changer. I love it 10 x more than capsule coffee
You really shoud not run scolding hot water through a plastic pod unless you enjoy having plastic in your coffee.

I had a Keurig machine and could clearly taste the plastic in my coffee. This was a new 2015 machine and using Keurig official pods. Tried other brands and it was the same. I threw away the machine after a month.
Nespresso does have a recycle program which I’m mindful to use. When I order coffee refills I order their complementary recycle bags that you use to drop empty pods into and then you drop that bag of full pods which doubles as an ups mailer to ship back for recycling.
And even when they receive it, only 30% actually gets recycled.
@@Entertainment-And there's the additional pollution from shipping all of those back. All coffee pods should be 100% aluminium and be accepted by the same machines that accept aluminium soda cans.
Went from a Mr. Coffee years ago to Keurig and loved the switch. I love the versatility of the different coffees. I am also a "auto-delivery club" fan where I get reduced prices on pods since it auto ships from the Keurig website. Lately though, I am getting into having a French press. I have had one off and on for years. I pick up any brand of ground coffee, put in the scoops of coffee and then near-boiling water and let it stoop for about 5-7 minutes. Once you get the coffee to water ratio just right for your own personal taste, there is something sophisticated and enduring taking a coffee from a French press in the morning. :)
I own both. I’ve never found Nespresso to be a true Keurig competitor, one is best for specialty coffee (Nespresso) and the other for everyday coffee (Keurig) and which has the most variety.

@@double_joseph327 The Nespresso uses an under pressure system to make coffee or more specifically espresso which is great for cappuccinos, lattes etc. Keurig is more akin to a drip maker and is best for your day to day coffee not specialty grade espresso. Both are great compliments to each other but neither is a suitable replacement for the other, cafe models of keurigs try to mimic an espresso but doesn’t use a bar based pressure system like Nespresso. So no not the same thing at all.
Keurig will never work outside of the U.S. because people not in the U.S. have higher standards for their coffee .

@@mariacheebandidos7183 Never. But it didn’t do well in Italy. Otherwise, outside of the US, Starbucks is like a status symbol. People buy Starbucks and post the cup logo as showing off. Definitely not done because of the coffee. lol. Now Japan is another story. Starbucks had to accommodate to the high Japan standards, so it’s very different from a Starbucks in the US. I moved to Japan 4 months ago, and even the McDonalds are absolutely good compared to ours in the US.

They're usually cozy, serve real non-fast food and you go there to meet with friends. Starbucks is for when you're at the airport or the train station and don't have time. It is to coffee what McDonald's is to food. Can it be a guilty pleasure once in a month? To some people, sure. But in 9 of 10 cases, it's something you settle for because you're in a hurry.
Im from usa. When i bought my home keurig single serve machine from QVC around 2010, i dont recall nesspresso having a machine sold in usa. I recall George Clooney nesspresso tv commercials a few years later.
I love my Nespresso and the coffee tastes fantastic. The downside is the pods are expensive and there are less flavor options. There are more kcups available in the grocery stores for less money, but I don’t see myself switching anytime soon.
Buy covers and refill pods with different types and blends of single bean. Get a roaster roast green beans.
I use both, i agree nespresso is better but its also prohibitively more expensive and then these nespresso keeps getting smarter blocking third party pods. So we use the Keurig more and the Nespresso is a more a niche nice product from time to time.

In Europe, Nespresso pods are cheaper and there are tons of good compatible capsules.
Nespresso is great for specialty coffee, Keurig is great for the everyday and variety and various options based on cost.

I love my Nespresso. I return my used pods and the shipping is very fast and easy. While the Vertuo I have isn't Blouerooth compatible it does tell you when to dona cleaning cycle. I can make coffeehouse quality drinks at home for the fraction of the cost at Starby's. I do appreciate the partnership to make pods available in grocery stores in the US. I would love to see more pods from different growers. The selection needs more variety. Perhaps with the advent of more users in the US,we will get more.
I prefer my Keurig because I got it as a gift and I also received a reusable pod to go with it so that I can just put fresh ground coffee in. If I’m lazy I use cafe bustelo espresso ground coffee, after it finished brewing in my cup, I add silk sweet and creamy, then a couple of ice. My ideal cup of icy joe to wake me up in the morning.
1 or 2 gram of ordinary coffee in an aluminium pod the same weight and beyond 30,- euros for the kilogram. Yes, that sounds like a real sustainable bargain to me...
I used to be content with my 30-year-old percolator and a can of Folgers. For single serving its all about the Aeropress. Hands down, can't be beat for single serving. And 100X cheaper than both Nespresso and Keurig. Though I would consider a Nespresso machine for the occasional handend...ish cup..
From Japan here, and we got a Nespresso machine because it was really cheap at Costco a couple years ago. It has been great, and the pods we buy are the Starbucks branded ones, and if purchased at Costco comes out to be about 80 yen a cup (0.51 USD). The only thing I wish was better was a more convenient way to recycle the pods.

Nespresso beats keurig no doubt! But a good espresso machine is the way to go no doubt, unless you just want to press a button...making your coffee by yourself is fun and tasty!
A couple of years ago, I got a 3-in-1 coffee maker produced by Instant Pot (yes, the pressure cooker/slow cooker company, lol). It takes K-Cups, Nespresso Pods and it works with reusable pods for both brands as well. So far, no issues other than the usual descaling needed, and I got it on sale at the time for less than 80 bucks.

I just recently decided to buy a Keurig because I like the milder taste. I find Maxwell House, House Blend especially good and a nice change of pace from my espresso machine. K-cups are available in most stores and very easy to find. I’ve had a Nespresso for some years now before I bought my espresso machine and well before the Keurig. It’s a Vertuo and took me a while to find a flavor I liked. It was Giorno. After while, Nespresso decided to discontinue it so the machine sat idle for a while. I finally decided to try a couple different flavors and was also sent a sample package. It was the coffee in the sample package that I liked the best. It’s unfortunate that shipping is so expensive. I thought I’d order a sleeve of the sample……bianco piccolo. The price was $9.80 but shipping is $8.00!!! How can you justify paying that much for shipping? It is not available locally so you just can’t go to the supermarket to purchase it. I would need to buy several sleeves to get free shipping and since I had already ordered other sleeves with that sample, it didn’t make sense to buy more at that time.. Nespresso needs to make it easier to purchase coffee. It may well be the main reason people are turning to Keurig.

I have had my Nespresso Vertuo (on my second) for the past 7 years. Never going back to Keurig.
My sister made me get a Nespresso... I already had a drip machine, Tassimo, and 2 Keurigs, so why would I want another? No need. She said I don’t understand and need to trust her, so I bought it. Now I’ve given away my other machines and i’m ranting and raving about how good Nespresso is; the taste, the crema, it’s unbelievable, the best coffee I’ve ever had. Arguably The Best $200 I’ve Ever Spent. Better than any coffee shop, you could bring me a $100 coffee and I’ll still prefer my Melozio!
I really love my Breville Nespresso. I buy Peets pods when Costco has them. Otherwise, I buy a range of them online. If I want regular coffee, I’ll make an americano or just use a pour over.

American coffee is essentially water with burnt dirt coffee flavor that is drenched with sugar syrups. In other words, they order coffee as an excuse to consume more sugar drinks. Unsurpringly, most Americans are oblivious to what good coffee really is and tastes like (hence the success of Starbucks). It's almost like a badge if honor if you can drink the worst cup of coffee on a regular basis. The worst ia seeing young teenagers walking out of Starbucks late in the afternoon or night with these giant syrup-filled iced coffees with whipped cream on top..

I had a K-cup machine. Used it for less than a year. Currently using a Nespresso Vertuo machine and have used it every day for 2 years. The fact that I can taste the difference of each and every pod is amazing to me and truly opened up what coffee is capable of to me is amazing.

If you are concerned about the price difference of single serve coffee pods, you should be drinking store brand drip coffee and buy it in bulk.
Used to get free Nespresso at an old job. My favorite pod was kinda light gold. So good.

Thinking there has to be something to this, a good cup of coffee, the single brew cups might be more preferable than the full pot of coffee sitting stale? Unclear, but there is a difference of taste to beans, quality. Uncertain as to what the consumer review is, but personal opinion/preferences, up over most brands. 😊
I've had both. I like Keurig's variety, but the build quality of Nespresso machines is better.
Started with a Keurig went to a drip machine and now I’m doing pour over. I’ll never understand how these Kcups/pods have gotten so popular. Tastes so watery in comparison. More expensive. Bad for environment. And it’s only slightly more convenient than a drip machine. Like I think maybe a minute faster?
Keurig is brown water. As much as I despise Nestle, they do have the superior product…so it’s a matter of tastes vs price for the consumer.
I don't think it's a marketing, branding, or retailing contest. For me it was the taste. K-cups were "OK" but Nespresso pods were so much like real freshly ground and brewed coffee. The taste was superior. Now, I hated the waste and lock-in that came with Nespresso, so I moved to a bean to cup machine. But if forced, it would definitely be Nespresso over K-cups hands down. I even think the taste of the old Douwe Egberts/PHILIPS "Senseo" machines that were sold in the early 00's in the States tasted better than Keurig.

I have both Keurig and Nespresso Original Line and Vertuo, also I have a Dolce Gusto for my husband from South America where it was very popular, but now he rarely uses Dolce Gusto and prefers Nespresso, but to save money we refill capsules, we like the taste of centrifugal coffee more than drip
I started out drinking a keurig in college and i knew the coffee was horrible. Nespresso coffee is much better tasting but honestly not super great in comparison to just making your own coffee from beans.
Agreed. My oldest machine is a Nespresso Virtuo. I was not completely satisfied with it and after while bought an expensive Italian espresso machine. The difference is noticeable and quite frankly don’t really like the excessive artificial crema produced by the Nespresso. These machines are several years old. However, lately I started enjoying the milder coffee produced by a Keurig at a local business where they offer complimentary cups, so much so. that I bought one. I’m actually enjoying the milder taste for a change of pace. I’ll say that I’ve never liked Keurig until now. It’s possible that the brand of coffee made the difference for me.
They first time i tried to price a nespresso machine they were almost 1000$ a keurig was less than 100$ so i did the only reasonable thing and bought a new 12 cup drip machine for 30$
I grind My FogBuster Coffee, and I would use reusable kcups if I had a Keurig. But Sadly, I’m not a fan of Keurig because that coffee isn’t as fresh as Fogbuster coffee who brews air roasted, organic fair trade coffee fresh and ships out. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Keurig is nice, but I want the Technivorm Moccamaster coffee maker more. I’m just Picky about Coffee and my Coffee maker but hope those who have machines enjoy them.
My concern about pod coffee machines is all the plastic waste going in the landfills. When you come up with a biodegradable way to make the pods, let me know. Until then I’ll just grind my own coffee & use my expresso machine.

Coffee is one of the few things I took from my time in the military to my civilian life. A good cup in the morning and after dinner with a good dessert helps me throughout the day!

I like that Nespresso challenged Keurig and now Keurigs are wayyy cheaper and more accessible to every consumer. I use a Keurig and am very satisfied with it. Nespressos are more expensive and the pods are also crazy expensive. I like to use my reusable k-cup with my keurig to ensure I am not being wasteful and still environmentally conscious.

My coffee machine was only $220 and with a push of a button grinds the coffee beans automatically and runs hot water through them up to 20G, and so in 55 seconds I have an amazing hot cup of fresh grinned coffee.

I love NESPRESSO! I live in the US and I wish I could buy European Nespresso which is infinitely better than the one sold in the US. I was in Europe this summer and was able to bring a few sleeves home to compare. Had I known how much better their product is, I would have bought a truckload. Does anyone know if it's possible to import (retail) European Nespresso to the US? ☕
eBay sells a lot of nespresso sleeves imported from Europe, Israel and everywhere else. I always look on eBay for my favorite discontinued pods because they always do run out of the best ones.

@@tomunderwood4283 US Nespresso coffee used to taste like Europe's Nespresso but I noticed a significant difference (less flavor, more of a chemical taste) a few years ago. I continue to drink it bc it's still better than others. The US allows certain chemicals in our food that are not allowed in the European Union so my guess is that it's in the processing of the coffee or in the pods.

Also a trend is such companies changing their cups so the older Nespresso machines do not work properly anymore. Thus trying to force customers to buy new machines.

real creme on top of real espresso looks nice, but its actually from the C02 being released from the fresh coffee grounds and its bitter.
With the combination of varied accents, poor quality microphones, and audio levels all over the place, trying to catch what everyone is saying was quite difficult. Please work harder on quality audio mixes!
My son has a nespresso system and I had coffee from it for three weeks. The coffee was OK but it was considerably weaker than what I was used to with my Keurig. So my typical morning coffee fix is 14 oz consisting of two Keurig pods one 8oz and one 6 oz. This typically costs me $1 per cup given the coffee and quantities I purchase. The two pod combo allows me to have a variety of flavors by choosing from six different pod types. My Keurig coffee tastes better and stronger than the nespresso that costs 3-6 dollars per cup. I just don't understand those who prefer the nespresso.

Nespresso dominates the coffee scene in Switzerland. When I was there on vacation I could not find drip coffee anywhere, including coffee shops and restaurants. Drove me nuts.

I've had both, but kept keurig. I'd say Nepresso coffees taste a bit better but, in the end like vhs vs beta its a price thing tones of no name coffee makers make pods at lower prices for the Keurig and add to that you can by reusable pods in a pk of 4 for 12$ this makes a regular can of coffee last 3 weeks @ 9$ I can spend that in a few days on Nepresso coffee pods. if your going to buy pods than Nepresso coffee is the one to go with if you want fresh every time with out the price using the coffee of your choice and no damage to environment Keurig with reusable pods is the clear winner

We love our Nespresso more than Keurig, hands down; it's the best, in our opinion. And it wasn't their marketing with Georg Clooney at all. I'll go as far as saying neither my wife nor I are moved to purchase any products because of who their face is or how it's marketed. We came to love Nespresso because we tried it! It was in our hotel room during a visit to a city in Texas that we came across this incredible brew. It was there that we tried it, and it was then and there that we were simply blown away. Our Keurig, well, it's in the basement.
I adore my Nespresso machine and coffee.

i got used to keurig coffee till i was offered a cup of just basic drip coffee maker coffee at a family members house. the fact that the taste of that coffee blew me away made me realize just how terrible the coffee i had been drinking for years was.

My coffee machine was only $400 and with a push of a button grinds the coffee beans automatically and runs hot water through them up to 19 Bar, and so in 45 seconds I have an amazing hot cup of fresh grinned coffee.

20 seconds? That's fast, like that's actually too fast for good coffee. Try making pour over with a kettle some day, you'll notice a huge difference. Takes some skill but it's a fun hobby.

Americans don't know good coffee. Starbucks failed here because it tastes horrible. To us, Nespresso is passable, but most buy their own beans and grind them on a per cup basis.
The reason I like Keurig is the variety. Sometimes I want plain coffee, sometimes flavored, other times decaf or tea. My grandkids like hot chocolate & hot apple cider. ALL IN ONE MACHINE! ☕️☕️☕️
You can do that with Nespresso machine too. I use mine for hot water for tea or hot chocolate often.
I have two nespresso machines. Luv them. However I returned both K machines. The temperature was not hot enough. The brewing method did not help. I am a nespresso customer!
Nespresso is where it’s at. Their recycling program is what sold me.
I've had the Nespresso machine and it was lovely but the pods were expensive and needed more oz 😂 so I recently got the Keurig and can't stop drinking the donut shop brand pods 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

These are 2 completely different coffees and consumer markets. One makes watered down mediocre coffee. The other tries to provide a product close to what a coffee shop offers.
i prefer the taste of nespresso coffees, but am unsure if it's that much better than standard Keurig offerings to justify the price.
I prefer Nespresso to Keurig but I buy Italian capsules fit for Espresso coffee machine. Just as good and much less expensive.
that's unfortunate cuz Nespresso needs competition. I've been mostly been able to avoid Nestle and I want to keep that going. But I've always wanted a coffee pod system.

Yes. But Nespresso Vertuo and its pods are amazing.
If you don't drink a lot of coffee ground coffee goes off sooner.

Nespresso is something you own at home, because you will drink it for pleasure. Keurig is for office where quantity matter over quality, companies just need their employees to be caffeinated. Companies with bigger bucks may have fully automated espresso machines, then you got the top end companies with a barista on-site. Don't forget the cheap end companies that don't got anything, if you work for them, it's best to get the $1 coffee deal from MCD.
I've had the same Nespresso machine for almost 10 years. Original line. It's been pretty good. But somedays I still like to make my own coffee in a French Press. Just depends on the day and how much time I have. I had a Keurig machine before. I hated that stupid thing.
