Shaq started beefing with Dwight Howard over who deserved the title of Superman...and never stopped

There are lots of similarities between the personal arcs of Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard. There are also lots and lots of differences, from their team accomplishments to their styles of play to their personalities. Weirdly, both the ways in which Dwight and Shaq are the same and the ways in which they aren't have helped fuel a very weird, very long, very dumb beef.

  • So basically Dwight was super respectful and honoured Shaq but the big man still got pissed... ok man

    • The thing I hate most about Shaq is he acts like he worked extremely hard on his game when in reality he was constantly out of shape and Kobe has said he thinks if he had a better work ethic he would have more rings, but he gets to bully players who look up to him and tell them to work hard to get a ring. Such a hypocrite.

    • Well, not really. You can tell that Shaq wants Dwight to stop thinking he’s Superman but Dwight keeps copying Shaq.If a dude called himself “the black mamba”,then everyone would be pissed off.but because Shaq has quite the personality, everyone’s defending Dwight.

    • @@2kmichaeljordan438 People has called Devin Booker the new mamba. Kobe at the age of 36+ wasn't bullying a kid 13 years his senior and Dwight looked up to Shaq. Everyone has their own idol that they want to be like, all Dwight wanted was recogniton and support from Shaq not taunting. Maybe Shaq should be like Dwayne Wade, he gave Shawn Huerter his shirt and gave the dude some love unlike what Shaq did to Dwight.

    • Tinted Media Shaq is basically insecure and he shouldn’t be. He had a wonderful career; he has 4 rings and arguably a top 5 center of all time. It’s natural that guys want to be like you. I mean, do you see Jordan getting pissed at Kobe or Lebron wearing the number 24 and 23 respectively? Hell, Jordan even gave Kobe proper advice and calls him his little brother. Shaq could’ve done the same to Dwight.

Except as your own Beef video on Shaq vs. David Robinson pointed out, he never felt that way. • Dwight Howard "underperformed expectations" is the stupidest damn thing I've ever heard in sports. Career playoff averages of 18.4 PPG 13.8 RPG 2.5 BPG on 59.5 TS% Dwight is tied at 20th for most 1st Team All NBA selections. He has more appearances there than: Dirk, KG, David Robinson, Havlicek, CP3, Moses Malone, Nash, Iverson, Pippen, Gary Payton, John Stockton, T-Mac, D Wade, Ewing, Drexler & Isiaih Thomas. Westbrook & Curry are both 30 years old. By age 26, Dwight Howard had more 1st Team all NBA appearances than both of these MVP winners currently have combined. Even when you include players from the pace-inflated, pre-3PT line era there's only 7 men in history to retire with those averages (all Hall of Famers): Duncan, KAJ, Shaq, D Robinson, Ewing, Hakeem & Elvin Hayes. Anthony Davis is the only other current player with a pace for it, but that's a long way off compared to Dwight's near 100 post-season games over the course of the last decade and a half. Only 9 men in basketball history have won DPOY multiple times. Only 3 have won it 3 times or more, Dikembe Mutombo, Ben Wallace & Dwight Howard. No player, besides Dwight Howard, has ever won the award 3 times consecutively. At age 23, Dwight carried an Orlando Magic franchise to the NBA Finals. That's the same age Karl Towns is right now, in threat of missing the playoffs. That's 2 years younger than Anthony Davis, at risk of doing the same as KAT. But that run is so incredible and somehow so forgotten in Dwight's career. KG or no KG, the Celtics were still the defending NBA champs with home court advantage in the 2nd round vs Dwight. Over the course of the '09 postseason, Rondo nearly averaged a triple double with 16.9/9.8/9.7 & 2.5 SPG. Pierce & Ray averaged a combined 40 PPG. Even Kendrick Perkins averaged just shy of 12 & 12 as a textbook kind of physical Dwight-stopper. Dwight stopper or no, Howard led every game of the 2nd round series in rebounding as the Magic advanced to the ECF. Against the "Chosen One" Lebron James at his peak, Dwight averaged 26/13/3 on 65.1 FG%. This is the crowning series of his career, arguably, and a complete decimation of the Eastern Conference favorite & supposed best player in the league that season (Lebron '09 MVP). Dwight even averaged 4.0 BPG in the NBA Finals against the dynastic, all time Lakers. His defensive presence held Kobe Bryant, one of the game's most ruthless scorers at the height of his proficiency, to 43.0 FG%. Howard set the NBA record for most blocks in a single Finals game during that series, 9, in a 16 point & 21 rebound performance. This run, title or not, is made more special by the absence of '09 All Star Jameer Nelson. Jameer was limited to 5 games the entire post-season, all in the Finals, and averaged 18 MPG & 3.8 PPG. His shoulder surgery was supposed to be season ending but the Magic were so desperate to put ANYTHING around Dwight vs LA that Jameer gutted through 5 horrible games. Dwight reached the Finals with no superstar wingman, no Kobe to his Shaq, no Stockton to his Malone, no Curry/WB to his Durant, no Pippen to his Jordan. Rashard Lewis was the biggest overpay of his era, Vince was a role player caliber starter by the time he joined Dwight, Turkoglu was a fine but not special player. And same for Jameer. Allen Iverson was lionized for working his way through a weak Eastern Conference and taking one game off an incredible Lakers team. AI's run included a remarkably controversial series against the Bucks, marred by bad officiating. Dwight secured a clean Conference Finals victory over one of the most accomplished players in the history of sports, in his prime. Why does Dwight get no love? Why do people pretend Dwight held something back or underachieved? Sum total of NBA Finals Shaquille O'Neal appeared in without an All NBA SG on his team: 0. Kobe Bryant is the hands down #2 SG to ever play basketball, some call Dwyane Wade #3 & at absolute worst he's still top 5. Dwight in '09, and during most of his Orlando tenure, played with average starters or nobodies. His record of success is unquestionable. Rashard Lewis was one of his era's most massive overpays & that's the best big signing Howard ever had next to him. Even with the Lakers Dwight came off BACK SURGERY and returned from a ton labrum injury early (often a year or more before bigs return to their normal level of play), to play LA into a post-season slot AND make the All NBA roster in the process. Does anyone remember how abysmal that Laker roster was outside Kobe+Dwight? Pau Gasol was hurt & played terribly under D'Antoni, averaging 13/8 on 46% FG as a big. D'Antoni was nearly run out of the league after this Lakers stint until the Houston run made him a media darling again. Nash was a hobbled shell. Outside of Kobe, Dwight & Pau here are the highest minute totals for that Lakers squad: a decrepit Metta World Peace, Jodie Meeks, 36 year old Antwan Jamison, 38 year old Steve Nash, Earl Clark, Chris Duhon & Steve Blake. Andrew Goudelock & Darius Morris started playoff games for that year's Laker team. LA begged Dwight to stay with campaigns & billboards, it was only in hindsight that Lakers fans & the media skewered Howard after he spurned then for Houston.

    • Howard underachieved because he was expected to carry the mantle of the best big man in the game as Wilt, Kareem, the Dream, and Shaq had before him. Your argument shows that he was great when he was at his best, but you totally missed the point you brought up to argue. All those guys were great for 15 years or so; Dwight was great for 6 at best. Perhaps it was unfair to have those expectations for him, but when everyone saw what he was doing at 21/22 that was what everyone expected of him (including himself when he posted a pic of himself alongside Wilt, Kareem, and Shaq upon his trade to the Lakers). You completely missed the point YOU brought up, so how dare you have the unmitigated gall to say Dwight Howard's underachievement is "the stupidest things in sports" without even defining what his expectations were. Clearly your education has failed you ;]

  • Now this is one of those true beef. Like Shaq himself, the is some cheesesteak in this, but that is because Shaq too lazy to make it an all beef sandwich. I was here before Shaq's career started ( like before 'Blue Chips' ) and he made the Orlando Magic into something. I think that was a part of why this started, as Shaq moved along he wanted the Magic to never get back as high as he had taken them. When Dwight came along, Shaq was unhappy, but didn't care till Dwight took away Superman. Ever since the all star Superman dunk, Shaq has never stopped ripping on Dwight. If you ever spent a minute with Dwight you would know he is mostly respectful and falls apart when someone is intentionally hurtful, ask Kobè. Dwight Howard just wanted to be a friendly rival with Shaq, but got burned and demeaned because Shaq has always been protective of that "Superman" moniker. That is really it, just Dwight being silly and having fun, Shaq reacting much worse than any of his "mentors" did when he was young. I'm glad to see Dwight Howard getting a second chance in L A. He even looks like he is having "fun" while LeBron tries leading the Lakers.
