Shaq's 10-year beef with David Robinson included the pettiest 71-point game and one huge lie

Shaq and David Robinson were presented as two totally different people, one flashy and interested in being a star on and off the court, the other humble and service-oriented. But when the beef between these two legends started, it sometimes brought out the worst in both.

I mailed Robinson when I was six and he sent back an autographed picture and letter!
I'm not a big sports fan, and I don't know much about David Robinson, but I do know how to google something. 2 minutes of research confirmed my suspicion that you are just spewing untrue hateful things for your own amusement Zdiddy7. I'm not entirely sure what sort of life a person has to be living to make slandering a person with baseless accusations seem like a productive use of time, but it's probably a pretty sad life.
You sucks , Robinson is a great great person
Zdiddy7 👎👎👎
Zdiddy7 You sound like a scornful woman...
You sound very disturbed. David Robinson has been a devout Christian his whole life. Accusing him of sodomy?!

Shaq uses that “I need to be upset” excuse for everybody he has beef with to get away with being petty
Not an excuse if it’s the truth
I mean, he uses that excuse for everybody, maybe thats just how he was.
Jw 1357 he owned up to it in his 40s That’s not really learning. Also he still does it with other topics
I mean he’s telling the truth about it. He was taught and hazed by his veterans and they had a trial by fire attitude. Also it was an idea that MJ taught to Kobe and shaq. Which was to play with grit and anger.
Shaq really got petty when a man named Yao Ming destroyed Shaq repeatedly.
I met Robinson years ago. He asked ME if l wanted an autograph or picture. Stand up guy. Very genuine. My father met him 10 years earlier with a similar situation
David Robinson seems like such a cool dude

David Robinson is such a good man. Everywhere he goes in San Antonio he will take a picture. When his son played football and basketball, David was at EVERY single game whether home or away and he would take pictures with everyone if they asked nicely

How’s Robisons 70 petty but Kobe’s last game is iconic? 🤣
Without Robinson... Spurs wouldn't have won that many titles in the last two decades. He set the tone and culture in that team even before Duncan and Popovich. No superstar sacrificed his game and stepped down as much as Robinson did.

Robinson is one of the nicest guys I have ever met. My younger brothers chased him down when he was leaving a golf tournament and he talked to them for about 10-15 mins and signed their hats and everything. Super nice guy.
But a beast on the court! 😤
Petty? It's the scoring title. I think the word you're looking for is competitive.
Brent Bolinger it's still petty. He went out of his way to play in a game that had no bearing on playoff seeding and over with well before the 4th quarter but decided to stay in the game for no reason other than to score the most points seen in decades by one player just to upstage Shaq. I miss that level of competitiveness, but it's still petty.
Its not petty. The fact that he made that much of a difference that game and that he was competing for a scoring title is more than enough. So stupid to call it petty.
it's WARPIG it's obviously petty, He didn't do it in a game against Shaq, it wasn't in a game of consequence and the opposing team likely didn't put up much of an effort when they were already down big. A player that never seemed to care about the scoring title, and always had competition with Ewing and Olajuwon now felt the need to put on the biggest offense game of his career just so Shaq couldn't claim the scoring title, It's the definition of petty.
K B the fact that you had to try to write a whole essay to prove your point makes it even more invalid. Didn't even read past the first sentence. Goodbye
You're right Brent, its competition and pride something these new athletes lack.

CBarber22 "It should've ended" key words
Say the same thing to Shaq and Jordan, and they'll both laugh in your face, also robinson had his chance to show he was the real mvp but got, you know what by Hakeem
+CBarber22 The biggest problem I have with those that say Robinson>Hakeem is simply that Hakeem revolutionized the position. He's probably the ONLY 90s C who could actually dominate in today's game! Also, his footwork was so impeccable that superstars have been going to him over 10 years after he retired to learn it!
CBarber22 How many playoff runs did Robinson have?
Damn, i never knew (until your video) that Shaq made up that David Robbins on encounter. That’s pretty lame. As a young lakers fan in the 2000s, I kinda hated David Robinson for no reason.

Thought that story was interesting. When I was younger my stepdad was working in the mens shoe department at a Dillards in San Antonio and Shaq came in and my stepdad asked him if he could get an autograph for his stepson who's a huge NBA fan. Shaq said no and also got mad because Dillards wouldn't give him a discount bc he was famous. Never really held a grudge with Shaq but it always told me anything I needed to know about his character but I'm sure he's changed over the years. When I was a few years older maybe an elementary student I ran into David Robinson at the movie theater in Huebner Oaks in SA. He was standing in line with his family yet was gracious enough to shake my hand and talk for a moment or two. I don't think anybody can question David Robinson's character.
@V P because he grew up in the San Antonio area.

That was 6 years later, it wasn't to win a scoring title (even though he did that year), and wasn't Shaq taken out of that game at about the 2:45 mark?
Shaq was just being mean to one of the most kind-hearted, nice, and a great man player ever. And I am a Rockets fan.

Spoiler alert. Shaq never got Hakeem back. 4-0
justOnerandomguy tru but Shaq was young and Hakeem was in his prime by the time Shaq was the MAN Hakeem was old would’ve been nice to see them both play
200-2002 shaq would have destroyed Hakeem. Look at Shaq’s numbers in the finals vs Hakeem. And he was still a kid years away from his prime .
Michael Delgado Shaq never really faced a true big man after the 90s. Not during the 3peat. When he faced Ben Wallace in the 04 Finals the he was slowed down and taken out of the equation. So we never got to see a prime Shaq take on a HOF calliber Big man till he was exiting his prime and in my opinion Hakeem is a better Defender than Ben Wallace
shaq could never do much against the elite centers. Anyone he was dominant against weren't great centers. Just good ones.
Well, yeah, you don't get back at the 🐐
Seth mentioned this video in Shaq vs Everyone. I wonder what they'd change making this video today. Less game footage? No game audio? Anyway, Seth, you said come back and watch this, so here I am. And now back I go to the Shaq vs Everyone video!
Possibly not showing who wrote the articles they cited? They show where the articles are from (LA Times, Orlando Sentiel, etc.) But they don't actually name the author, which they are now really good about doing. I don't think it would've been controversial to put the video in the compilation because they are pretty obviously not intentionally plagiarizing, but I can understand if it doesn't meet their current standard, or if one of the sources got upset and made a point to them.
While it sucked to see Robinson hurt, the Spurs got lucky af getting Tim Duncan. Tbh, The admiral getting hurt was honestly maybe the best thing to happen to the Spurs, as it indirectly sparked a dynasty.

5:39 - false. Robinson was better than Duncan for a while. Check the advanced stats. In fact, Robinson led the NBA in win shares per 48 minutes in three seasons post-injury.
I hadn't remembered this history at all, and it's a great story. The interesting thing is that in their very different ways, they're both pretty good guys. No. Couldn't beat Hakeem, couldn't beat Shaq, couldn't manage Dennis Rodman on his own team, needed Duncan to win him a title, and then Duncan would go on to win three more without him. Amazing numbers. Body chiseled out of granite. Overall properly rated, in the playoffs overrated.

@@FuShengAlex That we got to see anyways. Kareem in his prime and Wilt/Russell would have been a helluva thing to see too.
We've got a decent spread of good bigs in the NBA now. There's no shortage of talented, diverse and entertaining bigs - they're just not on the level of guys like Hakeem, Shaq, Ewing or Robinson (at least so far).
Three years later and Giannis is FMVP and arguably the best player in the league, Jokic is MVP, Embiid was an MVP front runner before his injury, Gobert just collected his third DPOTY, and DeAndre Ayton and Bam Adebayo showed tremendous promise during improbable finals runs, it seems like we’re entering another era of great big men

Great series, would love to see more of these!
Speaking as a long time Laker fan, I will always be appreciative for what Shaq did for the franchise. However, I never cared for how rude and disrespectful he could be to some of his own peers -- in particular, David Robinson. And for Shaq to carry on that lie about DRob not giving him an autograph was truly deplorable because he's essentially defaming the man's character. For Shaq to be acknowledged as one of the greatest to do it and still have this sense of insecurity is sad. He's the common denominator in all his beefs with Kobe, Penny, Van Gundy, Dwight, DRob, etc. Maybe had he been more disciplined like Kobe there's no question he would've been the GOAT over MJ, Kareem, Lebron. I can see why Kobe didn't really respect Shaq like that --- talented but uncommitted to the game and his level of fitness. And this is why I felt the Lakers made the right move in holding on to Kobe and letting Shaq go.
I largely agree with this. I've been a Lake Show fan most of my life and extraneous stuff aside, I felt like Shaq always hit a pass, especially from the media, because he was more gregarious and willing to talk. His outsized personality overshadowed guys who were already relatively quiet in Penny and Kobe, who seemed to want little more than to hoop. It can be debated whether or not antagonizing them gave them additional energy to channel on the court but at the least had Shaq spent less energy getting involved in all these WWF-like side stories and more on the game he would have likely meshed better with Kobe at the least, and likely would've stayed in LA longer.
David Robinson = pure class and talent. Shaq = a very large human being. what is a "free throw?" I always knew his little story wasn't true.
The Houston Rockets fans are out in full force in the comments section.

@ Yun, Draco keep on dreaming please, I mean even Steve Kerr said that his Chicago Bulls team would have never won 4 strait Championships. And Steve Kerr is actually one of the few players in N.B.A. History to do so.
Yung Draco, I mean just look thee record between Houston Rockets and the Chicago Bulls over the last couple of years be -4 the first retiring o Michael Jordan, the Chicago -Bulls were at a defeat by the hands of the Houston Rockets for about eight out of ten times.
That's because they never got to meet in the playoffs. The Rockets played in the West and the Bulls the East. Everyone knew the Bulls would make it out of the weak East. But there were legit obstacles to the Rockets. When the Rockets won their 2nd title they had to beat 4 60+ win teams. The only thing we have to go by is their games during the regular season. And the ultra-competitive Jordan wasn't just going to lay down for the Rockets. He played hard and lost. Then there is the fact that the Magic beat Jordan's Bulls when he came back and the Rockets beat the Magic. BTW, I think that IF the Bulls had the better record against the Rockets during that same time period and knowing they'd never meet unless it was the finals, you would be using that same regular season to sing the Bulls praises. LOL.
