The Shaq-JaVale McGee beef became so nasty their moms got involved

2020 ж. 21 Нау.

JaVale McGee and Shaquille O’Neal are two NBA big men of different styles, shapes, and generations. You might not think they’d have beef as they rarely saw each other on the court, but as Shaq moved into his role as analyst with a big personality, their adversarial relationship developed.
They have a sort of a big brother-little brother relationship. Not in the sense that Shaq looked out for JaVale or anything like that, no certainly not. More in the sense of... Shaq teased JaVale until it became a real fight so vicious Mom had to step in. Seriously their moms got involved.
What spurred this beef? 2.75 words: Shaqtin A Fool
JaVale McGee was featured on the blooper segment more than any other player, ever. And guess what? He didn’t like that. This is a classic tale of a joke gone too far. And because this joke went too far on national television, year after year, it’s only natural that things blew up into a hearty cut of well-seasoned beef.

    • @Damon Tul same here I'm only 16 but he is THE freak of nature who would be pretty dominant any era Greatest athlete to have played the sport along with Bron and MJ but by far the strongest Very good fadeaway shot and a defense worth rivaling with bill russell Could have easily averaged 65 or 70 plus ppg in his prime and over 40 or even 45ppg for career if he wanted to If he actively stat padded with goal to break and make records he would have had double the records That 50 ppg season was 62 (in his earlier years) imagineif he continued on the trajectory Otherwise I wouldnt put him above Kareem or Brons resumes nor near MJs crazy career but he still on my mount rushmore Crazy how half of ppl dont even consider him in top teens and put Shaq above him (one of most overrated players ever Hakeem would have embarrassed him if their prime were at same time, neveretheless Hakeem did the deed well in 90s as well)

      @harmanjotsingh4230@harmanjotsingh42303 жыл бұрын
    • @Damon Tul as damn superhuman Wilt was, he would be undeniably greatest center of all time had he gotten few more rings to compare himself with Kareem The goat argument takes into perspective not just pure skill or athleticism but career resume, longevity, and swag If he won more rings he would be top 2 no doubt ( only reason he is so damn disrespected is cuz he been dead if he maintained the media presence and confident aura of big man, be would still be in conversations like he was in 1990s for top 2) but the fact is he didnt, despite being on a team with Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, but I will give him credit for his health at the time It should be considered he had a relatively short career that would have otherwise been majestic if not for his surgery but the players back then would be just as good if not better had they the resources and nutrition (money to spend on themselves and PEDs) and tech and equipment LeBron is more athletic than MJ and ideal power forward who can play many positions like Magic, but there is a reason why 6'6 MJ is synonymous with basketball (other than the media) Same goes for Kobe The older players WERE playing game mentally but Kobe and MJ were something else It kinda revolves back to why I prefer Hakeem over Shaq who without size was barely any skill at all but Hakeem was renowned for his post play and elite defense and Wilt would have been good with his insane vertical and speed A lot of Wilt is speculation, too many what ifs and probablies, like how probably would have averaged 40 plus in his career and how he could have extended his career with tech of nowadays but fact of matter is he still lost way too many times He didnt have the sexy career like that of MJ or even Bron nor achievements of Kareem

    • I don’t think it went too far. Javale would make outrageously bad plays sometimes and they were rightfully subject to ridicule. Javale legitimately tried to dunk from the free throw line in a game and missed. You’re going to be made fun of for it. Yes, sometimes he was put on Shaqtin for minor offenses, but that only happened because he had prior history of making very big mistakes that were very funny. I honestly see nothing wrong with it.

    • Whats crazy is..I think he had that kind of potential. Dude might be the most athletic center I have ever seen. Dwight can jump higher and has more muscle...But Javalle is a really smooth athlete..He's one of the first bigs they could talk about "running the floor like a deer". But I think it's between the two of them. Young Shaq is definitely up there but I feel like the Shaq we think about is the one who just bullied everyone (He did have really quick feet even when he was big though). If you pull up a highlight reel of Javale you would swear you were looking at an all time great player. It looked hilarious seeing him try to dunk from the free throw line on a fast break...but there's a reason he thought he could do it..I guarantee he could do it with ease in practice. I think his biggest problem was confidence and being on two awful teams with bad culture to start his career. If you watch him play streetball he has 3 point range EASY. Don't get me wrong I don't think he could be a big time scorer...But with his leaping ability, if he was injected with confidence and good coaching early in his career, I think he could have been like a 12, 12, 3 blocks defensive player of the year discussion every single season kind of player.

Respect for a man who goes hard and honestly isn't afraid of looking bad because he gives 100% versus players who hang back to conserve energy and who just does what is good enough/ bare minimum. And JaVale McGee was right in his criticism - the joke went too far as to affect McGee's reputation amongst teams and it would have affected signing and essentially his career.
