There isn't competition, jealousy, or threat here. I feel like I never hear people talk like this. Steph acknowledges their inspiration and research, and then isn't quick to defend what she creates as uniquely hers. It's a part of a public discourse and she welcomes that. So cool! I've only seen a handful of Theory videos and I've never seen anything with Steph before, but I'm hugely impressed by her! Like genius business brain there.

The only time she ever was in a video specifically were the GTLive Livestreams which she was on the couch with Matpat as kinda the "community voice" so to say? Like how a streamer would play a game and talk to chat? Matpat would play and steph would talk to chat on the streams.

    • I don't know about others, but I appreciate and respect Steph as much as I do for MatPat, I'm not watching GTLive very much, but I have seen their interviews and stuff together and I see how much MatPat loves her, and then I think how hard should this be for her, a life with a husband fully invested in KZhead and taking care of Ollie and supporting MatPat also involved in household chores...that woman reminds me of my mom, balancing so much sides while being a major player behind the curtains of Theorists channels; pillar of MatPat's success. About KZhead shorts, for me, it's the time. There are longer videos I would love to see, but sometimes, I need to conserve time due to studies, so I'll watch like some amount of shorts, and get back to work. I don't prefer it over longer youtube videos, but, in that case, shorts do come handy. there are pros and cons to both.

  • This hit me so hard that the channel that I've followed since I was a kid is so meticulous with the way they've been releasing content. Like, a lot of these things should have been obvious, but they just weren't for me until this interview. The fact that MatPat and Stephanie have been spending 12 hours a day just working on shoots regularly? Their proposal to Lunar X? The fact that they have over 20 full time employees and over 20 freelancers working for them? It just seems so surreal but makes so much sense, maaaajor props.

  • I quite literally grew up on GameTheory, it has become everything to me. Seeing the "Goodbye Internet" video made time literally stop for me. I knew I was gonna be really sad but watching till the end I left with this bittersweet feeling. It was this whole "The only good parts of my childhood are being ripped out from under me" but also "I am so proud of them for doing what is best for them. For listening to their hearts and understanding what is best". It's always gonna be a bittersweet feeling when I partake in the new era of the Theory channels, it will never be the same. But knowing that MatPat and Steph will not only still be behind the scenes and will still be involved (I'm holding onto hope for cameos in FNAF videos lol) while also doing what's best for them and their family just makes my heart so full. As I get older and am now a part time college student, I find myself admiring them even more than i did prior (if that's even possible). They are so eloquent, elegant, playful, kind, and passionate and I'm finding them become who I wanna be. They just are such grounded and loving people and I can't fathom living my life without knowing them. I'm so blessed that i got to be here and experience the GameTheory with Mat and Steph. It reminds me a lot of Unus Annus. I was heartbroken that it ended (despite knowing it was coming). Everything ends and i know that, but when it happens it still hurts. But I'm so ecstatic that i git to experience this. Anyway, this is just to say, i love being a theorist. Thank you MatPat and Steph.

  • This was such an insightful interview, i feel a lot of people have this notion of youtube is easy or is instantly rewarding. To hear all of you acknowledge the struggles, late nights, and worries felt humanizing. Now this is my opinion but i feel everyone is always putting on a mask of success/hubris that almost disconnects you from that creator. It was genuinely awesome to hear a bit more of the behind the scenes. Best of luck to Steph and Matt!! Colin and Samar keep up the great interview process, i felt that you are able to get people to open up and have a genuine experience on your show, and it is wholesome to see/listen to.

  • 1:59:42 "The opposite of happiness is interestingness" I couldn't find that study, but the philosopher Slavoj Žižek says something related ("Why be happy when you can be interesting?", arguing that we often don't truly want to obtain what we think we desire), and there's also the Greek concept of eudaimonia ("living well, achieving a fulfilling life"), which is an alternative to hedonism (focusing on pleasure and enjoyment). It's something really important to think about, since happiness can be fleeting and dependent on external circumstances (you can still be fulfilled in a more sustainable way, if you can find a meaning/purpose worth dedicating yourself to).

I've always had so much respect for both Mat and Steph and how they've built up the Theory channels over time, and have been wanting to get their insight and professional takes on the behind the scenes of KZhead. Their production style, business pipelines and work ethic are fascinating to learn about and I love how articulate and digestible their explanations were. Mad respect for Steph in particular for carrying many of the business heavy foundations and initiatives that have truly made the Theorist channels and brand what it is today. And of course Mat who compliments those efforts and can creatively support the internal teams while being the voice and consumer-facing point person for the brand. Really going to miss this era of the Theorist brand but really looking forward to what the new creative directors have in store for the future of the channels and IPs!

  • To the idea of a MatPat ai voice idea. It would work for some but not everyone. I began watching Game Theory when the channel first launched until today, and it was around when other writers were brought on board. That I noticed I wasn’t watching every video when it was released like I had. MatPat had his own unique way of writing the videos, that when other people did it, there was minute details that I picked up on and lost the same interest I used to have. If that makes sense to anyone 😅🤷‍♂️

I started a job where i was learning so much and it interested me so much, i really enjoyed it but it came with a lot of extra stress and took a lot of my time. And as a parent i felt like i was missing out crucial time with my daughter. So my partner went back to work full time and i quit my job. Now my life is more boring, we go to stay and plays, we chill at home, we go to the park, we look at bugs and birds and leaves. Its so simple and sometimes i miss the mental stimulation from my job, but im far far happier. I had never considered the happiness to interesting scale but i feel like thats honestly so perfect and will remind me when i crave a more interesting life, to actually think do i want to be happy or do i want my life to be interesting. I feel like keeping a good balance works.
