Forget EVERYTHING you learned in history class. All you need to know about is the wild history of… BREAD! White bread, wheat bread, sourdough, focaccia, baguettes, whichever is your favorite bread doesn’t matter. What does matter is how bread has changed the entire history of the world I guess. Carbs are king! And controlling the bread across world history has meant controlling money and power.

I tell you what, MatPat - the whole bread thing gets even crazier when you consider how deeply engrained (pun intended) it is into our very LANGUAGE. Consider, if you will - the prefix "pan-" refers to something universal or all-encompassing. For example, there was a recent "pandemic" that caused great suffering the world over. However, the word "pan," as you kind of pointed out with your reference to the phrase "panem et circenses," is the Latin word for bread. In fact, one could literally say, "pan est pan" - from the Latin, "BREAD IS EVERYTHING." Also - nice Hunger Games reference there. I'm sure only a handful of people caught it. 😏

i’m a pastry chef currently in culinary school and a month ago i wrote an essay about this exact topic. bread is so ancient and is literally the reason we are alive.
Well if you wrote a paper on it in culinary school then I'm sure you know that's not exactly true. That's a very Eurocentric perspective. As stated in this video majority of the world did not rely on wheat as their primary food source. So no, bread is not the reason I am alive, nor is it part of my diet today.
@@R.B.90bro rlly hit us with the “not ALL countries” ☝🏽🤓
@@ZenSymphonia yes. I did.
Me and other Asians: I’m in danger!
@@R.B.90 I agree with you that bread is not the reason we are alive today, but I think that Matt Patt’s point in the video, which I don’t completely agree with, is that, whichever societies have the bread, have the power, which would actually correlate with the West consistently controlling the world since Rome (although the Muslim world did almost take that away, but they more or less forever lost their chance at Poitiers in 732, where their invasion of Europe was stopped by Charles Martel). However, I do think that this correlation between bread and power is either, just that, purely correlation, or, that it is just one of many things that determines which societies end up on top.
Now I know why money is referred to as “dough”
“Gotta make that bread!”
Also makes sense why the person making the most money in the house is the 'breadwinner'
The word “lord” also originates from Old English “hlāford” which meant something along the lines of “bread warden.” “Hlaf” became “loaf.”

I can’t wait to watch more of this series, such great information! I will contest one point at the very beginning. Yes, bread and other staples have been extremely important and vital to the survival of civilizations, and the inventions that came out of the need for more bread have lead us to be able to support larger populations. However, there is one substance more powerful than bread, and it’s used to make it too: water. You can technically last longer without food than water. Our bodies require frequent and consistent water intake to continue running properly, crops require water to grow, land animals require water to also survive, and fish require water to breathe and for transport. Having control over water sources is so vital that we still have wars over this today (I won’t get into examples to avoid politics). However, historical examples include the Mesopotamians, the ancient Chinese, and ancient Egyptians. They all began their civilizations on rivers or deltas, which provided the water they needed to survive. Eventually, wars would break out over the sources of these waterways, as civilizations realized that if they didn’t control the source, they could be cut off and perish. Water is also central to many beliefs and religions, such as Christianity where baptism is seen by some branches as able to sanctify and save the soul, and others as a symbol of their belief. I could keep going, but my point is that yes, bread and staples are so insanely important to civilization and its survival, but I’d argue that water is even more important. P.S. This is in no way intended to be any criticism of the video. The video was amazingly put together and researched, and I loved watching it. Just putting in my two cents about the most important substance. Without water, there is no life and no bread.
I remember when i was 3 years old i got a baguette at my local co-op and because i was young i decided not to wait for the next 15 minutes or so and just started eating luckly they let me have my bread but yeah i always loved bread after all its bread plus i just like bread like stuff if it uses flower and needs cooking and has carbs i like it i mean one of my few goals in life is to make a succesful pasta restraunt that ultimately does great
7:55 CORRECTION: MatPat says at this moment that Xerxes invaded Greece in the year 300. This is wrong as he actually invaded around 480BC. The number 300 refers to the 300 Spartans that courageously fought (and almost won) against the Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae.
If Persians invaded Greece in the year 480BC Then why didn't spartans fought Persians until 180 years later??
@wscamel226 They didn't. The Greco-Persian Wars took place between roughly 492-479. Persia didnt really exist come 300 BC, it was conquered by Alexander the Great in 330 BC and by 300 BC its lands would largely be apart of the diadochi successor states following Alexander's death. The Seleucid Empire was founded in 312 BC, lasted until 64 BC when it was conquered itself.
And Aeneas was a trojan who survived the trojan war, going on to found the race of Romans. I don't think he was ever considered Persian
I was surprised by that mistake. He knows better.
