Forget EVERYTHING you learned in history class. All you need to know about is the wild history of… BREAD! White bread, wheat bread, sourdough, focaccia, baguettes, whichever is your favorite bread doesn’t matter. What does matter is how bread has changed the entire history of the world I guess. Carbs are king! And controlling the bread across world history has meant controlling money and power.

  • I never thought I'd see the day that Matpat not only references Bill Wurtz in an episode opener, style the title card after Wurtz's "entire history of the world, I guess" but then also make a theory that is (in essence) a bread version of that same video. Anyways, definetly my favorite food theory (no reason in particular...).

  • I tell you what, MatPat - the whole bread thing gets even crazier when you consider how deeply engrained (pun intended) it is into our very LANGUAGE. Consider, if you will - the prefix "pan-" refers to something universal or all-encompassing. For example, there was a recent "pandemic" that caused great suffering the world over. However, the word "pan," as you kind of pointed out with your reference to the phrase "panem et circenses," is the Latin word for bread. In fact, one could literally say, "pan est pan" - from the Latin, "BREAD IS EVERYTHING." Also - nice Hunger Games reference there. I'm sure only a handful of people caught it. 😏

However, I do think that this correlation between bread and power is either, just that, purely correlation, or, that it is just one of many things that determines which societies end up on top.

  • This is perhaps my favourite Food Theory episode yet. I love bread. (Also I'm a sociology major and a foodie so it balances out.) I'll miss MatPat when he formally bows out.

  • I can’t wait to watch more of this series, such great information! I will contest one point at the very beginning. Yes, bread and other staples have been extremely important and vital to the survival of civilizations, and the inventions that came out of the need for more bread have lead us to be able to support larger populations. However, there is one substance more powerful than bread, and it’s used to make it too: water. You can technically last longer without food than water. Our bodies require frequent and consistent water intake to continue running properly, crops require water to grow, land animals require water to also survive, and fish require water to breathe and for transport. Having control over water sources is so vital that we still have wars over this today (I won’t get into examples to avoid politics). However, historical examples include the Mesopotamians, the ancient Chinese, and ancient Egyptians. They all began their civilizations on rivers or deltas, which provided the water they needed to survive. Eventually, wars would break out over the sources of these waterways, as civilizations realized that if they didn’t control the source, they could be cut off and perish. Water is also central to many beliefs and religions, such as Christianity where baptism is seen by some branches as able to sanctify and save the soul, and others as a symbol of their belief. I could keep going, but my point is that yes, bread and staples are so insanely important to civilization and its survival, but I’d argue that water is even more important. P.S. This is in no way intended to be any criticism of the video. The video was amazingly put together and researched, and I loved watching it. Just putting in my two cents about the most important substance. Without water, there is no life and no bread.

  • 7:55 CORRECTION: MatPat says at this moment that Xerxes invaded Greece in the year 300. This is wrong as he actually invaded around 480BC. The number 300 refers to the 300 Spartans that courageously fought (and almost won) against the Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae.

    • If Persians invaded Greece in the year 480BC Then why didn't spartans fought Persians until 180 years later??

      @wscamel226@wscamel2263 ай бұрын
    • @wscamel226 They didn't. The Greco-Persian Wars took place between roughly 492-479. Persia didnt really exist come 300 BC, it was conquered by Alexander the Great in 330 BC and by 300 BC its lands would largely be apart of the diadochi successor states following Alexander's death. The Seleucid Empire was founded in 312 BC, lasted until 64 BC when it was conquered itself.

    • And Aeneas was a trojan who survived the trojan war, going on to found the race of Romans. I don't think he was ever considered Persian
