Patrick and Stuart continue their hunt for their own French chateau with this tour of a chateau on an amazing large wooded estate near Châteauroux.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau.

  • Oh no guys! This is more of a Manor house, not a Chateau. The property is lovely but the house has not character! You deserve a real Chateau! Please keep looking!

  • I live in a granite house in Scotland and you are so right, cool in summer and freezing in winter!

    @MsRiverdee@MsRiverdee2 жыл бұрын
    • Hi there. The granite houses are wonderful but so cold as you know well. I once rented a gorgeous farm house from the 1500s in the Loire Valley. Thick granite and limestone walls. It was may and I had to start a fire in the bedroom and living room every evening. Not naive here but this chateau was just not ours. Heat will be the biggest cost item for us. Beside renovations. Love your comment and if you have input, please feel free to share. Happy New Year. 🥂🎊🥂

    • So yeah... now after premiere... I do love this property and it has tons of potential. The main house could be fitted up with features to add more character, but the reception rooms are not roomy and ceilings are not high - things one cannot change. It doesn’t feel like a great fit, as nice as it is otherwise. For me, I could spend 20 years transforming the grounds and be happier than a pig in s....tuff. I do love that part, seriously. Good luck!

  • Hi Patrick and Stewart, I'm a new subscriber and look forward to watching your future content. This chateau lacked so many things I require while on my own search for a chateau. The front facade was so plain if a realtor had driven me up to the front I would have refused to even walk in the front door. It simply does not have good bones. You both did an excellent job of pointing out the pros and cons. I think your channel will grow very quickly. Keep up the good work! From the Isle of Capri

What we might see as a con might be someone’s dream and that is how it should be. I love that you picked up on that in a second! Now, Capri, there is a gorgeous spot on god’s earth! How fab. We hope you document your search. Through a lot of soul searching, we are open to something plain but with a complete farm still attached. It’s an adventure and we’d love to hear more from you . • We think that we choose the property. It is not quite so. The property chooses us. You know it is the right one when you hear the whisper: "You love me, buy me". We can go and view lots of properties. Does not matter how beautiful they are they leave us cold and uninspired. Till one day when we hear that ever so slight whisper in an air. Sometimes the house does not match all our dreams and expectations, all our "must" and "wish" lists but we suddenly realize that warmth in our hearts and say to our self: "This is the one. I will be happy here". So let us hope there is one such gem waiting for you in a countryside of Loire valley. Good luck and God bless.

    @ludmilabevan3283@ludmilabevan32832 жыл бұрын
    • Ludmila. We can completely relate to your great comment. Both of our last properties spoke to us. The one we currently live in spoke very clearly to Stuart. We haven’t even seen the house and we’re on our long driveway when Stuart said: This is our new home. Abandoned for 2 years……. He was right. And so are you. Also your observation that our “must have “ is not always what we end up with. We deeply believe that the gem is just around the corner. Again, thank you for your wonderful comment. Please don’t hesitate with any suggestions you have. Happy New Year to you. 🎊🥂🎊

    • Thank you! You are correct that I don't think we will ultimately go for 19th century. We want that historical provenance that a 17th or 18th century French chateaux can offer. If we wanted 19th century with reproduction architecture "in the style of", then we could just be looking in the United States. 😂

      @JourneytotheChateau@JourneytotheChateau2 жыл бұрын
    • The more we dig into the periods, 17th and 18th century buildings have just charm and elements that make us smile or say wow! We are itching to get back over to France. With a very tight focus and not a big willingness to compromise. I know I might not get a walled garden or all the wall paneling I may want. But the general direction is now much clearer.

  • Fabulous! I actually loved this château. Grand, but not too large. With a new kitchen and some cosmetic work and some chandeliers, the ground floor could be spectacular. (You could always encase those odd pictures, which could make for a wonderful surprise for some future owner in a couple hundred years.) I’m afraid I’d have to gut the bathrooms, but otherwise, the first floor has potential to be quite lovely. Clean slate on the second floor, which could be fabulous. And the grounds and outbuildings tick all the boxes. I wish the house had more of a grand stairwell. And it’s all going to cost a small fortune. I’m a little surprised you didn’t like it more. But I’m thinking the rooms could be a little larger. And it really didn’t feel historic or particularly old. Well done. And Happy New Year to you both.

Now onto finding it throughout COVID. 😫😳😫. But you are so spot on. Chandeliers and a new kitchen……. And hiding those paintings- what a great idea. Oh well. It’s like a property almost “speaks” to us. I think to much of its soul had again been ripped out again and the renovations where rather awful. Like you two, I love the symmetry but think it might have been a more handsome building without the towers. As you say, they were more an architectural decorative device rather than functional. And it's their size that disappoints. However, had all the parts ticked the boxes, I could visualize some of the upstairs rooms, devoid of architectural features, hosting lovely panoramic wallpapers such as those by Zuber or de Gournay. When one dreams money is not a concern of course. Or Stuart could put his artistic talents to work with magnificent trompe l'oeil features. There are always means of disguising or deflecting attention away from less than promising parts. But there has to be something overall that says this is the one. It will come, gents. It will come.

I know you are right, our chateau will come. The plans for our next trip are in the works. COVID allowing. Thank you for your input and a Happy New Year to you. 🥂🎊🥂🥰

  • I’ve seen many videos on renos of chateaus. This one was completely stripped of any architectural details. Even the fireplaces were very nondescript. Giving it chateau features would go a long way to make it very appealing,sumptuous ,and grand.

  • Hi Fellas! You could do a lot with this one! Roof looks new. It seems not so grandiose in a lot of respects. Front entrance facade is underwhelming. You are right, they did some things very well, others were odd. I do like the empire salon, but those paintings are a miss for me too.

  • Have you thought of extending your search to mansions rather than just chateaus? The upper middle class French in the 1800's/early 1900's embellished their country houses to the point of surpassing the chateaus because they had money where the nobles were feeling the pinch. A house might not have the term chateau attached but the size and style might surprise you -- and the price tag. The family of a friend in Paris had 3 mansions in France that they divided their time in -- one in Paris -- one to the northwest and one in the south. Those outside of Paris had extended parks -- magnificent houses and out buildings but did not hold the title of chateaus. And if you referred to them as chateaus, he corrected you immediately lolol

  • I understand your reasons for not getting this chateau. But I wanted to bring up a couple points for your future searches. You probably already know this, but I’ll add it here, just in case. ♥️ * Bathrooms: You mentioned that you wished that they hadn’t re-done all of the bathrooms, because environmentally it would be difficult to justify re-doing them simply because they weren’t to your taste. Remember that new/nearly new bathroom fixtures can be recycled rather than thrown away. ♥️ Murals/art: When panels have paintings in them which don’t have historical/artistic value, they can be painted over… or if you feel that they should be preserved for a potential future owner who might feel differently, they can be covered in fabric, or you can paint another color around them and then hang pieces of art to your taste over them.

    @penihavir1777@penihavir17772 жыл бұрын
    • Hello Peni. Thank you for your wonderful comment. I agree and practice either reusing or donating useable fixtures, etc. It feels just so wrong taking down perfectly good and new tiles..... It's me, I know. And you figured us out right away. Even though the paining have no great value for us, we'd likely cover them in either fabric or paneling. Great point and well taken. The whole chateau was not really "speaking" to us. But there were plenty of aspects that we both really loved. In any case, still hunting. Happy New Year.

  • The property has a lot of pluses. On the "stable" rooms. Just remember, you wouldn't be up there much and there's always paint and or sheetrock, but paint would do wonders. That library was really pretty. The strange painted figures room, I thought...could put paintings over them and on hinges to swing sideways to still see them. With the thick granite walls (thermal mass), once the house is heated, don't you think it would be fairly easy to maintain a temperature? Enjoyed the tour.

    • Hi there. Love it how you call it the stable rooms. Didn’t occur to me but spot on! I guess that, if we would have been in love with the chateau, we’d have rebuilt the top floor. Loved the library and dining room. The few people who live in a solid granite walled home commented that is always absolutely freezing in the winters, no matter how much they heat. Glad you enjoyed the tour and thank you so much for the great comment. 👍🏻

  • Hello Patrick and Stuart, The featuring chateau is very beautiful on the outside and the grounds with trees and outbuildings are wonderful. The inside, let's be polite as this did or does belong to somebody, if you are willing to buy, changes will be made! Yes all that wood panelling is a but too much, it should be removed or painted. If I was younger I would love to give it a go, those bedrooms are somewhat creepy even just looking at them, and I would change if the structure is sound. I do not like those creepy wash basins, they just don't work for me. All is well in altering but remember, don't go too modern, try and keep it a medieval is possible, kitchen tiles with painted guinea fowl. something with character, alas, be prepared to pay. It is not for you, so no ill feelings. It is a gorgeous building, and the heating could cost a fortune, yet I am sure a buyer can compensate for the better heating. That's life, you get what you pay for. We all have likes and dislikes. Can't wait to see you move to France and I was thinking about that pilot with the private jet plane, worth considering when the time comes. Now it's time for me to go, au revoir, totsiens - Stuart may still remember that Afrikaans word from when he was in the Cape. It was heart warming for me when you complimented our Country, even though it is in shambles now. Kind regards.
