  • i'm a rafa fan i'm so happy rafa won but this hurts so much. Don't you see, Med doesn't want it anymore, he seem so tired of these grand slam narrative and fans imaging him as evil dream breaker. He is disappointed not because he lost, but people treat him like shit even when he demonstrate excellence on the court, legit legendary performance. Like he said he doesn't hate the game in fact he likes tennis a lot, even when he loses he can still tell these are good tennis games. Only now he doesn't want to play for those fans who frankly don't care about the quality of exchanges between players anymore.(shouting between serve, calling outs, yelling before point is finished) These fans are not just rude or disrespectful, they are blind to his achievements and efforts on court. To him these fans are low iq and only knowledge of tennis is grand slam heros. He could be wrong but can you blame him after all this? Like everyone who watches tennis he loved slams since he was a kid, but as he grow up he felt the environment of slams is prejudiced and tasteless,(not to start on Djokovic) he had a point. i feel so bad for him, his story is heartbreaking, u can see tears in his eyes. he has so much talent and potential, and he's a true competitor, he fights so hard when things are not in his way and this takes real courage. younger gen is no match for him in terms of big heart and fighting spirit, Kygrios can only use entertainment as disguise to hide his lack of ability to win hard core matches. good luck Med, i believe in the following years people will travel to see your matches instead of bully slams

    • Couldn't have said it better. I love watching him play ever since he lost to Nadal at the US Open and I'm now a big fan of his, coming from a Nadal's fan. He is quirky and funny and is still very young for a person. To have to constantly deal with all the rude people can wear down any person mentally. He is just a person like anyone else. I just hope he still has a passion to play because he is such a great player and is better for the sport once the big three are gone. The world is cruel and life is unfair. However, I hope he has great support around him and that he knows that those rude vocal people are not the majority and people like myself and many other fans respect and love him and his game.

    • I'm a Rafa fan too! And this narrative about evil is bs. Nobody thinks Medevedev is evil. Everyone respects him and everybody knows he is the best after the big 3. He will become a champion. The fans wanted to see a historic win so they went a little crazy and thats totally understandable. Medvedev emotions got the best of him and thats ok. He is only a human. I'm sure of it that soon crowds will be only cheering for him because he is already winning them over.

  • He’s by far the most honest person to speak out his minds for interview. I hope after this loss wouldn’t affect him for the mentality. Australian crowd this year is really disrespectful to him, and he doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. People stop finding excuses saying it’s siuu instead of boo, this is totally bs. Do not get too discouraged - those crowds were tough - but think how long they have been in lockdown - this might have been firsttime in big crowd, they were a bit crazy, just like I will be my first time in a big crowd AFTER TWO YEARS. I am 74 so it was not so hard for me as for younger people, but still hard. It is good you told story of little boy - people have to know how this affected you. But maybe by being honest with your feeling, like Naomi was honest, you are teaching us. And the more people get to know you, your wonderful skill and your personality, they will grow to love you too.

If Medvedev could not stay calm (for this match), then he is not worthy of winning (for this match). Maybe this is also why the next generation is taking so long to take over from Federer/Nadal/Djokovic. They just do not have the right mentality.

    • Of the four tennis grand slams, the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, three are held in the Anglo-Saxon region. And these three Anglo-Saxon fans have the least respect for most of the Eastern European players, Slavic players and Asian players, and the most criticism of these poor players. These three games were unfair games because the fans caused these players to demoralize during the game. I think tennis has made too much money for these three Anglo-Saxon countries. Their fans are also very savage and shameless. So I want to give a suggestion for tennis. Should be replaced to a more moral and civilized country. my suggestion is: First, the Australian Open will be held in southern China or Vietnam. Second, Wimbledon will be held in Germany instead. Third, the US Open will be held in Russia instead.

    • Unfortunately, there is a cast system in tennis. When Rafa first came on to the scene, everyone saw him as the main villain out there to destroy the golden boy Roger. I remember media being like who is this sweaty Spaniard? Then when Novak came, suddenly he was the great evil Slav against the "defenders of the faith". It took a lot of time for Novak to be respected on the court and among Fedal fans. Now Daniil is the one painted evil, four GS finals he was in so far against Rafa or Novak - barely anyone chears for him. So how can the young guys get their moment? When everyone wants to see the big 3 to only progress further. Still when you have Roger vs Rafa, majority will be for Roger. When it is Rafa vs Novak, majority will be for Rafa. Novak is the only one embracing the new gen guys like Daniil. He is the only one who congratulated Daniil on putting up a fight today. He doesn't mind loosing his Big 3 status, he only wants to make them work for it. And they do. Neither Roger or Rafa congratulated Daniil on his US Open win. Says a lot.

Some of these players coming through have this siege mentality that the crowds are somewhat inclined towards certain players from certain parts of the world. But look at Marat Safin, Anna Kournikova, they were very well loved. I think Med has to shake these negative thoughts off cos he’s already winning crowds over bit by bit and one day he might just have that edge in terms of crowd support over others; I hope he won’t call it disrespectful then. Anyway, if Nadal was the founding father of modern defensive tennis, Medvedev is the rightful heir to bring it to the next level. His consistency is unbelievable and his serves are so huge that a 10ft buffer behind the baseline don’t matter much. All the best Danil.

    • A "siege mentality" is completely valid. It's hard to be an Eastern player in a Western game. Eastern players are treated ok, but only until they start threatening the Western darling's position. As a kid, I remember very clearly that Novak was seen as the "Djoker", but as soon as he got more competitive, the narrative flipped and he became the villain.

By dissing and cursing an outstanding athlete, who happened to be Russian. All this anti-Russian propaganda in the western media, informs and influences attitude of the public in the stadiums. In AO finals this year, it allowed Rafa to win.

  • It was an epic final but a shame how Daniil Medvedev was treated by the partisan crowd. Rafa Nadal was undoubtedly the sentimental favourite since everyone (except Daniil supporters) wanted him to achieve the impossible 21st GS target. It wasn't meant to be a popularity contest but unfortunately it seemed to turn out that way. Daniil is still young and has not learned to turn this crowd hostility into a weapon to his advantage. He should take a leaf out of Djokovic's journey, not the most popular player on tour but his "me against the world" mentality is really unshakeable. It was a heartfelt interview and Daniil showed how much he was hurting. But I hope he will rethink and reevaluate his future career moves. Once he achieves the Djokovic mentality he will be well nigh impossible to beat. He has already proven his court craft and steely determination to be a winner.

I can’t tell you how utterly disgusted I am to live in Australia after seeing how not only Medvedev was treated during this match but also many other matches where other favourites have been cheered and opponents booed. We’ve also now even accepted players like Kyrgios dropping the F bomb and flipping the bird to the crowd so I think the whole game has gone totally downhill in Australia as far as the etiquette of years gone by is concerned. Tennis Australia need to have a long hard look at how we now look to the rest of the world because I’m quite embarrassed on our behalf. Take a card out of how Wimbledon operates during a final. Maybe even when Katherine is in attendance for good measure. I’d like to apologise to Medvedev on behalf of Australia and say a massive thank you for your entertainment, hard work and time here.

No one must cheer for someone they don’t like, but booing players right straight away for doing literally nothing or while they are going to serve? The crowd was disrespectful since Medvedev kicked Kyrgios out. They were disrespectful at Gael vs Matteos match. At every Kyrgios/Kokkinakis Doubles match. Also at the woman finals Barty vs Collins. If you want to make a tennis match like a football game, it’s fine, but don’t disrespect people and don’t disturb them. Even a lot of people are not cheering for Djokovic, but they are at least respectful and not booing him at every motion. The situation is very sad to Medvedev. Not only is the crowd always on their side but the tournament organizers are as well - they tolerate drunken provocateurs and rig schedules to promote their favorites. And sometimes they even deport the hated champion so their guy can win. Which is why Djokovic's success is even more impressive.

  • I like Daniil a lot, and I've rooted for him for years. The crowd was absolutely unacceptable last night, and it's a damn shame that he had to face a crowd that was so against him. But I don't like how he said he will "play in Moscow even if it means missing Wimbledon". Essentially, he's saying he wants to be the crowd favorite every time, but he fails to realize that there is not a single player who is the crowd favorite 100% of the time. No one knows this better than Djokovic, who has won 20 slams with the crowd against him all the time. I hope Medvedev learns to handle these situations better, including interactions with umpires and ball-people. He can be so great, and it would be a shame if a few matches with rowdy crowds ruined it all for him.

  • Think what he is describing is a similar path to what Novak had to take. Novak came in with a fun-loving, childlike heart. And it wasn't until he became a man that he reached his true potential, and became, in my opinion, the best tennis player we've ever seen.

    • Nathan Gayner you make a good point. So many young kids including the next gen started playing tennis because of federer and nadal and have it ingrained in them that they NEED to be loved and adored by the people. Novak became truly great when he stopped making the people laugh, decided to become the "bad guy" and made it his relentless goal to start crushing dreams and make fans cry to sleep. AO 2012. Wimbledon 2014. Wimbledon 2019. Medved is in the right place learning to channel his inner Novak. He's like the Joker of this era and should harness that to become a true great.

  • Daniil is probably my favorite out of the group of up and coming tennis players. He's goofy, and his dry humor is just enough to tickle my fancy. But I think his emotions gets the best of him, because of his lack of experience in the biggest stages. This was how a lot of players, even the big 3, dealt with it. The only sad part was he's the one who aggravates and provokes the crowd. I want to understand the disconnect in his mind when he complains about them, while also mocking them during his matches. It does not really earn you goodwill to do that.

  • Daniil, you are wonderful human being. People that uphold real values will always love you. The diference is between western and traditional orthodox civilisation. Love ,compassion, respect, humility were not displayed by Australian tennis fans . I will pray for them.

  • Here after Daniil's victory in Miami and 4 titles in 5 finals in a row. How happy that such a wonderful person and player like Daniil was able to overcome this period of his life and return to victories and successful performances again. I hope that Daniil will still be able to come to Moscow and win the tournament in the near future, and I will be able to cheer for him and give him a piece of love that he gives us every week. Spasibo, Danya! Your story shows that you should never give up and that good things happen to good people! 🐻❤

  • His story is so gut wrenching to hear. As tennis fans we need to do better! We've been craving for the next gen to step up and pose a legit threat to the Big 3 and then when one of them (Meddy) does (at least on hard court) we try to shut him down. Hopefully Medvedev starts to get the love and support he deserves from now on. What an exciting player and an authentic person he is!

  • The unfortunate thing is when you play, you feel the crowd around you to be the whole world. I wish he could sense how people all over the world love him and were totally supporting him watching tv.

  • He needs to learn to shut out noises from the crowd, and not to show his resentment (as he did when winning the 2nd set) for not being favourite. Then he must learn in interviews not to blame his defeats on the crowd, even if they did have something to do with it. Learning these things would earn him more respect, and change spectators' behaviour much more quickly, than complaining. Djokovic has had to live with never being the crowd's favourite, and has become world no.1. He is a player that Medvedev should study and learn from.

  • In no other sport are the major events held at the same venues year after year after year. Australia,France,UK and USA have been holding the grand slams among them forever. This hegemony needs to end. Grand slams should have new venues every year. Newer champions would emerge more easily and more kids would dream the bigger dreams.
