2 hours is 120 minutes 😎
I remember borrowing 'Ringu' on DVD from the library when i was 17, and watching the 'Battle royale' trailer for the first time. I fell in love, and soon purchased the special tin box edition for about £30. I've watched it so many times, I actually know it word for word, even though I can't speak Japanese.
Hunger games: Can I copy your homework Battle Royale: Yeah, just changed it up a bit so it doesn't look so obvious.
there are literally no similarities besides the fighting aspect😭😭
@@carnivoremoment You aren't too bright are you?
Battle Royale philosophy: life is about competing to survive, our true nature is dog eats dog, and you lazy millenials need to realise this for your own good. Hunger games philosophy: competition for survival is a tool of control the upper class uses to keep the lower classes fighting each other instead of overthrowing their true oppressors. We need to STOP fighting each other and unite against our TRUE enemies, the wealthy who don’t see a problem with a small group profiting from the work of the many. The two films are COMPLETELY different in what they are trying to say. Kids killing each other is the only thing they have in common.
@@gaiseric9518 the plot of the hunger games and this movie are completely different. explain it since i’m not too bright...🙀
Well they are both movies where kids are forced to fight for survival until only one remains, but the writer of the hunger games Suzanne Collins claims to have never even known about this film...because writers aren't very well read and never do research to see if it's been done before...
Battle Royale is one of the greatest and most influential movies of the 21st century. It's had a huge impact on 21st-century popular culture, from movies like Kill Bill and Hunger Games, to anime like Fate/Stay Night and Sword Art Online, to video games like PUBG and Fortnite. EDIT: And now shows like Squid Game and Alice in Borderland.
Without a doubt. PUBG (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) developer Brendan Greene, AKA PlayerUnknown, cites this 2000 Japanese cult classic as an inspiration in his game creations, including PUBG.

Yep
@Mr.agent 47 That’s battle royal. This movie changed the spelling to “Royale” as in French.
BR was the original movie that started it all in fact without release things would've turned out a lot differently.
But the concept was from bare knuckle boxing 1700s and follow by wwf battle Royal
Not really. You should see The Running Man. Arnold Schwarzenegger film.
_"Blu-Ray Trailer"_ *Highest resolution: 480p*
You misunderstood the full concept of Blu-Ray. Movies can be considered Blu-Ray even in 720p or 1080p so there aren't really an actual quality to it. So even though the movie quality is 480p, it would be fitting to classify it under Blu-Ray. I'll give you a better example. 480p = 10 pixels 720p = 15 pixels 1080p = 22 pixels If a movie was created in the 90s accordingly, the quality would never passed more than 480p because of its limitation in pixels. And if another movie was created today, the quality would be able to reach 1080p seeing how there are more pixels. So when you convert these two to Blu-Ray, the first movie would be in 480p and the second in 1080p. Simple as that.
@@poppopp2700 No, you're wrong on several counts. While 480 was the only resolution in the 90's and earlier, that's simply what was shown on your TV screen. The only way one can be "stuck" at a certain resolution is if the source is digital. TV or movies shot on film don't have a specific resolution, and that includes basically everything from the 20th century. When it's converted to digital, the resolution will simply be whatever resolution you set the digital transfer to be. Hence there are endless older films and tv shows which have been remastered and can now be enjoyed in HD, despite them pre-dating high definition technology. I wasn't saying it's not *possible* for a Blu-Ray to be in 480p, my point was that it would be pointless and stupid to do so. It would look essentially no better than a DVD. Only an idiot would do a Blu-Ray re-release and not remaster the film quality for high definition. More importantly, the clip specifically says "Blu-Ray Trailer HD". Yet it is NOT HD. I completely stand behind my riffing because whoever made this video deserves it.
@@KingAdrock420 The video title doesn't have HD in it actually. And two, you have to accept the fact that a blu-ray release doesn't necessarily mean the movie will look great because they are not simply shot the same way movies are made today.
Pop Popp But it was shot on film, which should be scalable pretty much for all resolutions, and it looks fine on the actual disk, don’t know why it looked like this for the trailer
As if you have the budget to make a good quality movie.
Is there possibly a better quote to sell you movie than “This is my favourite movie ever” - Quentin Tarantino

Yes! And its frightening that everyone is ignoring this.
The scenes for some of the characters were so short but they left a big impact. That plus the perfectly timed music plus the bleak environment plus the suddenness of everything PLUS the emotions of the characters made for a really great film! The lighthouse scene explains it all: One minute they were all friends full of hope that they'd escape, the next minute were at each others throats over the smallest suspicion! Another way to tell a film is good is when it spend almost the whole movie developing a character to be the 'bad guy' but then you're made to feel bad for them when they die!
Agreed! I love how they played Bach over Mitsukos death scene, and how the teacher casually gets up to answer the phone with 50 bullet wounds 😂 epic movie, well said! ^^

This is exactly what i was thinking!! And its working!
NOTHING WILL EVER COMPARE TO BATTLE ROYALE!!!
This is from 2000 and The Hunger Games is from 2012. So yes, Hollywood ripping off asian films... again.
The Hunger Games was a book trilogy first so technically it's the author ripping them off but anyway I know right - I hate it how they always bring out these (usually) shitty versions of great Asian films. It's so stupid.
+lily what are other Asian films Hollywood ripped off?
BurmaChi Here you go, Rip Off - Original: * Reservoir Dogs (1992) - City on Fire (1987) * The Lion King (1994) - Kimba the White Lion (1965 - 1966) * Dark City (1998) - Akira (1988) * The Matrix (March 1999) - Ghost in the Shell (1995) * Inception (July 2010) - Paprika (2006) * Black Swan (September 2010) - Perfect Blue (1997) There's also a shitload of lame remakes and movies based on manga. Most people out there have no idea.
YTazzkickr01 The hunger games is definitely not a "rip off" of this sure they have some of the same ideas that doesn't make them a copy of each other. one Major difference is the setting. HG is set in post apocalyptic north America this is set in an alternate timeline of a not to distant japan. while the same sort of theme of pitting children against each other is the same the reasoning is very different. Another major difference is the tributes vs the kids in BR. In HG the tributes have a little bit of time to train and come up with strategy and or teams. Also tributes in HG are televised and the entire population Is forced to watch them as punishment for rebellion so many years ago. So yes some same themes and general ideas are shared overall they are different.
YTazzkickr01 But they're all Japanese films. You said "Asian films" so I thought Hollywood copied stuff from China or India too

This is what Squid Game wanted to make. Japan has so much of these dystopian masterpieces unfortunately won’t be viral worldwide like Korean ones. (Partially because Japanese companies suck at internationalization)
It was really popular when I was a kid. Unfortunately, it was difficult to watch international films back in the day...until around 2004 when you could start downloading stuff
Nah Japanese industry dont seek international market they make millions and millions there that's why
squid game killed the genre no matter what you say but no one compares to battle royale they influence many survival movies
Battle Royale came out right after the Columbine massacre, so there was no appetite in America for seeing teens kill each other.
"My favorite movie of all time" Quentin Tarantino - that moment that you realize the movie is good
Depending on your opinion of Tarantino, that is. I personally love his films but I know a lot of people hate him, so that quote may be a turnoff. But the fact that he said that this would be something he'd be proud to make is pretty good. Honestly, if the American remake ever happens, I could only trust Tarantino to do it justice. (They were planning one but The Hunger Games kind of shut it down)
***** No American director with the tools available to pull off a remake has the balls to do it. Except Tarantino, but he may not be up to it after all these years.
Tarantino sucks
Some people say this is overrated but I watched the DVD and consider it one of the best movies ever made, I wouldn't change a thing about it, I guess it is perfect.
Who would you recommend it fore because i am wondering if i would like it. I loved the hunger games and this looks to be a more mature version of it.
tom sandström I have never seen Hunger Games so can't make a strong comparison. But in this film the characters knew each other long before the movie's beginning (they were all school mates). This I think is one reasons the movie is so good, you feel like the class-mate bonds (a totally unique bond in my opinion) are really strong and seeing them put under strain is really emotional. The movie focuses a lot on love but it never feels like a teen-romance movie but it doesn't feel like it's forcing itself to act mature either. And the whole film is certainly really emotional, it isn't just black and white it has everything, the parts where suspicion and paranoia overcome sanity, are really touching. Seeing a crazed psycho and realising that underneath they are lost and lonely child that just wanted respect, is also really sentimental. I hope I haven't spoilt anything or hyped it up too much. But when the movie ended, I thought it was brilliant and wanted to watch it again instantly. If you do choose to see it, I hope you enjoy it as much as me.
I watched it last night with some friends and i had a great time. There were a couple of minor things in the movie that i didn't like but it was a great movie :)
A small correction, Suzanne Collins said that she had never heard of battle royal before she wrote the hunger games.
And i am not some hunger games fanboy, it is just a fact :)
Ok i might be kpop and kdrama fan but i can't deny that squid game was a mix of some japanese works from Kaiji, liar game, battle royale, and the movie as the god will its very similar like even the doll thing and the games, and when i watched squid game i felt something reminding me Alice in borderlands... I wish the director gave credit to Japanese works !
The director said that he was inspired from many Japanese works & he never intented to copy anyone. Peace 😌😌😌
@@ipsitahansdah7428 LMAOOO "inspiration" isn't an excuse to copy, he just copied soemone's HW then changed up the answers a bit. Admitting to it doesn't make it any less a copy. Squid Game is a masterpiece in its own right but Korean media has a habit of copying other cultures and art then profiting off of it. Would it kill for them to come up with something original? This is coming from someone who has a huge love for Korean culture.
@@krazyxki Easier said than done, how many "original" works do you are out there, do you think people in the future would be able to come up with stuff that's 100% original? Also yes, inspiration, copying in the industry means you do the same thing but worse, Squid Game was a hit because the author focused on the characters more than the game, and put his own spins on it(watch the interviews on Squid Game before going around doing broad generalizations)
I think the director did quote Liar Game as inspiration. But it kinda got glossed over.
@@krazyxki you're joking right? Do you even know what copy means? I love battle royale more then squid games but please, tell me in what way are they at all the same? Even the prize, representation, and antagonists and every aspect remains different. Literally the only thing SIMILAR is a vs aspect. Only in SOME games of squid games does you winning directly meant killing someone else. But continue to just make baseless opinions. I don't remember any money being involved im battle royale or any sense of them chosing to not do the fight being an option
Make a game about this and call it Battle Royale battle royale
Hugo Jeep The original material of Battle Royale.
nw its called PUB G
Hugo Jeep yup it’s PUBG meaning PlayerUnkownsBattleGrounds
This movie is so perfectly directed. It was able to compress an insainly wordy book(the characters detail everything about themselves and there thoughts on their experiences. the book is very blunt and straight forward with out anything left up to the imagination) into a fast pace action filled drama that let most of the talking be done with the charachters expression and actions. Thus making it a very quiet film.
This is how the hunger games should be done.
the PG rating killed HG
if hg was done like this it would never had been released in the US its too violent and the plot is so controversial battle royale was banned from the US until 2013

lol how disturbing thing make this is you fav? are you psychopath?
I'm 15 and female and literally the only Battle Royale fan among my friends. Whenever I mention Battle Royale, they start rambling on about The Hunger Games. When I even said to them, "Am I the only one who doesn't really like The Hunger Games?", they immediately began gasping and saying, "How could you not like it?" and whatnot. It makes me feel bad coz I've seen the film version and currently reading the manga and novel of Battle Royale and I have to say, the story is so much more gripping than The Hunger Games. It has struck me emotionally and the use of psychological elements make it worth turning the page over and over. The harshness of human nature is brilliantly explored. With that said, I don't mind The Hunger Games, I only read/watched it because of it's rise in popularity, but it wasn't the book/movie for me; I could hardly feel the characters and didn't even like Katniss at certain points, the love triangle almost destroyed it for me but I kept my patience until the end. I also read Catching Fire and thought it was much better but gave up after chapter 5 of Mockingjay. I do hope there are other teenage fans of Battle Royale but if not then I will still treasure it by my heart.
★ CheejiTae ★ Don't worry, I have the exact same problem! My friends all like HG, but they haven't seen BR yet and I plan to show them. BR is so much more gripping (I read nearly 300 pages in two days). One of my other friends have not watched BR yet but are already interested.

Part 2: Also the contenders in Battle Royale are a class of students. Not strangers, but a close knit community of people with long-time grudges, affections and feelings in general which makes the situation all the more tragic and sad. In short: I think Battle Royale has more depth and you can relate to the characters a whole lot more, making the film a truly thrilling experience.
Thanks a lot, Suzanne Collins for copying off of this brilliant masterpiece...
The concept of the hunger games and the concept of battle royale are completely different things. Even though they both include teenagers sent into an arena to fight for the death, it doesn't mean that Suzanne Collins ripped off this movie. Comparing this to the hunger games is like comparing Dracula to twilight just because they both include vampires.
U took the words right out of my mouth give it back! Lol
she actually got the idea when she was channel surfing between a reality tv series and actual war coverage she saw people competing for something, the flipped to the other channel and saw two people fighting to the death... that's when Katniss' story trickled into her mind plus who cares? The Hunger Games has way more backstory and is very interesting and detailed!

The final stage of Takeshi's Castle where you actually get to meet Takeshi Kitano himself... and instantly regret it.
@@RazorEdge2006 that has made my day
If I see one more comment compaing this to Hunger Games I'll scream.
judge dredd black Nah. I don't them but I don't reallu like them either.
aiken relkins man you're a lot like finnik from hunger games

Any one after madan gowri
Yes,i am here after MGs video
That evil smile 1:31 of the student Mitsuko Souma got my attention. She was a pretty deadly badass. The novel and manga of her backstory is really sad and twisted that made her the way she is.
What is it?
@@Pr0d3gi In the movie her backstory is that her mother prostituted her out when she was young. That's her backstory.
People are going to want to watch this because they played H1z1 or pubg
OhhBessell ye
Or fortnite
so?
@@creepyverse2407 so people will confuse this thinking its based on the videogame when i reality its based on the animie from temhe 1990s
@@NumaanTahir My response is still "so". I've had friends who played Fortnite, PUBG, and H1z1 game and then watched this. None of them thought it was based on it since the movie is on Netflix they can see right there the movie came out around 19990/2000. And the film isn't based on an anime from the 90s. The film is based on the novel. The novel wasn't based on an anime either. The novel was completed in 1996 and published in 1999. If anything it was inspired by Lord of the Flies or other novels of that nature. But it wasn't based on any anime. Anybody with an internet connection and a higer IQ of a 5 year old could see it wasn't based on any of the games, and even if they assumed it was, who cares. Its a great movie and if people decide to watch it after playing a game, then so be it.
I've been a huge fan of the whole BR franchise since i was in high school and now I'm 30. I read all the manga's and watch the movie and never see anything else like it and its crazy because Hollywood loves the idea and came out with The Condemned and Hunger Games and then companies came out with so many different battle royale games and now its all hyped...
I wish this battle royale that started it all became more popular....
Right?
@@iliveinsideyourhouse1367 Nah, leave the cult classics to the cult haha!
@@iliveinsideyourhouse1367 But since it never had a english version it never got popular at least on the west. This is the same reason I never watched it because it was not in english and the only way to watch it was through subtitles.
Turkey Shoot (1982) really was the originator of the idea of this film but BR took it to another level and did it best.
This is the real squid game.
This is one of my favorite trailers of all time
Jules Lovett it’s a weird mishmash of sad and creepy; precisely what makes it so memorable.
I just watched this movie earlier. For me this is one of the greatest movies ever made in history. The story is so compelling and the film is a timeless classic. This is probably my most favorite movie now.
Battle Royale is above all a book. A really good manga and this movie was made from it. I've never seen the movie but the manga is a masterpiece.
movie is great too.
Who came after madan gowri 🖖
Po da punda
the lighthouse scene alone > the whole THG movies.
eric le lmaooo yes
agreed tbh
Agree
This film was incredible... I read the book beforehand and even that made me cry. Violent, shocking, thought-provoking. It has it all, really.
I am. Problem?
***** she's not trolling she's a fangirl of THG who can't get over the fact that this is the original hunger games....
Are you talking about me? I'm not a troll. I just loved Battle Royale.
Ernest schoenmakers let me tell you smth.......acting is one thing but HORRID SCRIPTING is another thing (THG) and c'mon you're telling me that BR had bad acting?...... its called not having experience in acting which is somewhat acceptable compared to the no-good cashgrab of a film that is thg with a meh.... cast with meh..... actors that delivered in my opinion a very poor and lifeless performance compared to a truly believable delivery for a cast of young unexperienced actors in a foreign film (THIS OPINION IS MOVIE BASED both books are somewhat enjoyable BR= a little better)
this movie is perfect, insane and gloriously twisted. love it. 10/10
The Korean director of Squid Game stole the idea of this movie 100%
theres LOADS. of killing games, they didn’t steal anything
He said he read the comic book version
Exactly. Also stole from "and As the Gods Will" " LIAR GAME"
Classical music + movies that explore conditions under which the border between good and bad becomes significantly more vague = awesome
One of the best movies of all time. Hands Down. Without Question
Not me actually coming hear cuz of Maverick MV for the boyz that is based on battle royale
Way better than Squid Game. Squid Game's succes is due to the Hallyu Wave and BTS.
If I didn't know about this movie up until 2014, so I could understand how Suzanne Collins wouldn't know either. As if she's supposed to care really. Not to mention this wasn't an international release. Some of you people didn't know what this movie was either, just bandwagoning. There is a reason why this movie had been banned in numerous countries. It's sick and twisted. I can't believe people are actually asking "why couldn't HG be like this?". Why would it? This movie is over the limit of the usual R rating.
As an author, do you really think she never looked up other dystopian novels? That she literally had no inspiration from something, especially something like Battle Royale (which hunger games is literally a watered down, more sci-fi version of), that is such a cult classic? I don't know if she intended to copy Battle Royale or not, none of us do, but I really think it's a straight up lie that she's never heard of something almost exactly like her plot and in the same genre, and even noted by someone like Quentin Tarantino as his favorite movie of all time. If you can all this sick and twisted, how is the Hunger Game not? How is The Lord of the Flies not? Kids killing kids is not a new concept and no matter how it's done, it's always going to be twisted. That's why people like it, though.
ari elle How is Battle Royalle a cult classic? Up until this point I've never heard of it, not even in anime, which I'm heavy on. The film was banned from major coutries. Battle Royalle being Tarantino's favorite movie of all time is an opinion. Doesn't make it so. Yes the whole concept isn't new, but it doesn't mean that Collins was inspired by Battle Royalle. Kids killing kids is sick and twisted with anything. Not just Battle Royalle. The difference though is Lord of Flies made sense, Hunger Games made sense, Battle Royalle made no sense.
Supre3m3Kai are you freaking kidding me? Do you even know what a cult classic is? Battle Royale was a best seller in Japan, it's country of origin, and is still very popular for a book translated out of Japanese and sold in other languages. The movie was a hit too. Hunger Games is a fad but Battle Royale is, as the preview puts it, a "modern classic". The following is HUGE. I know people who are not into japanese culture AT ALL who would die by the book tbh. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't have a rather large fanbase. And Battle Royal didn't make sense? The movie and the book are separate entities. In the movie the fascist government wants to terrorize the youth who are engulfed in delinquency by taking 8th grade classes to an island and telling them to kill each other off. That doesn't make sense? In the book the totalitarian government of Greater East Asia is just hosting a game for the enjoyment of high ranking government officials and rich people who make bets on who they think will win ect. (Sound like Hunger Games much?) That doesn't make sense? Okay.
ari elle No, no, no, we just met!
Supre3m3Kai what do you mean, we just met?
I am reading the book right now as part of a book club. As someone who read and enjoyed the Hunger Games, this is so much more intense. What is scary about this is that you can also see how it might be plausible. I think my bookclub and I should watch this at our next meeting.
The one that started the death game genera into motion. Thank you Battle Royale. You may be horrific to american audiences in the past and to other but through time people will see the true class you became. If I haven't seen the hunger games I wouldent be introduced to this film.
This movie was an influence for Pubg....Fortnite...freefire....squid game....hunger games.....
This trailer has me shaking, the piano is eerily beautiful
