  • I’m totally convinced that in most cases punishments are not about correcting any behavior or wrong doing. It was just to satisfy someone’s urge to exert power over someone else and that’s it.

    @75egcg@75egcg Жыл бұрын
    • Yes and no, depends who was enacting them. With nobility it was almost always going to be about exerting power, but a great deal of the time it was the commoners who were singling out one of their own and turning them over to authorities as a criminal. This was possibly sometimes still to wield what little power they had, but usually either actually the person was a criminal, mistaken for a criminal, or was unsavory in some way to cause the general public to want them dead.

    • Depends on the type of punishment. These ones are horrible but going to jail is a needed punishment. Or getting suspended from school. That’s not exerting power that’s justice and correcting behavior.

  • I think it's worth mention that some historians argue that the Blood Eagle wasn't considered a torture but rather an act courtesy from the vikings perspective. The thing is that they believed that a warrior that failed to die in a battle is not going to get to Valhalla after they're executed as a prisoners, and that the only way to get to Valhalla for a prisoner was to become a "Blood Eagle" and to arrive to Valhalla on it's wings. So this kind of executions were to be granted to the most respected prisoners only - ones that, despite being shamefully prisoned, deserved to be in Valhalla after death anyway in the eyes of the vikings. Some say that prisoned vikings would happily become Blood Eagles instead of being executed other way.

  • The stills of blokes being tortured are truly gruesome. A lot of presentations assume and profligate, for example, that the ribs and vikings thing is a fact. I now know that it only appears once in their literature. Same with the iron maiden and other instruments of torture being made specifically for deterring the general community just by being on view. Whatever the torture it's beyond belief the lengths some governments/rulers etc went to to maintain their status quo.

  • there are gore websites out there where people upload phone footage of recent torture like 2020, 2019 etc. The cartels in Mexico are known to send videos to rival cartels when members get tortured as warnings. One I saw was this guy getting flayed from neck down to his waist amd leaving the skin like a skirt. Warlords in many African countries still use torture to dissuade

  • The molten gold thing reminds me of a certain form of execution in Jewish law. There are four methods of execution - סקילה (stoning) חנק (choking/strangling) הרג (beheading) and סרפה (burning). That last one is really just pouring melted lead down the convict’s throat. Each one is the punishment for a certain crime, it’s not like you can pick, and they are carried out by סנהדרין, the Jewish High Court, which doesn’t really exist anymore. The idea behind these specifically is that by dying such a brutal death, the person’s sins will be forgiven in the World to Come. Grim, aren’t they Also Hebrew is really hard to type and format with English rahhhh

  • Ragnar's pit was full of black adders. A common snake in the UK can even be found in northern Scotland. The pit he died in is located within The Black Gate, inspiration for the Black Gate or Mordor some might tell you. The Black Gate is in Newcastle, UK were I am from. It had many snake pits and was a prison guard house there unspeakable things happened to people. You had to go through The Black Gate to get the castle and it's grounds

  • One weird things i noticed in this video was the mention of serbians that used some methods in the Hungarian revolution??? This doesn't make sense at all, don't see how author managed to make such conclusions since a lot of factions and nations were involved in the revolution. Feels like random "fact" was put there without any contest or any logic at all.
