Daily fantasy sports sites claim they are not gambling enterprises, but they seem awfully…gamblish.
If only their ads were more truthful.

  • It would be interesting to see an update of how these companies pivoted into ACTUAL 100% gambling a few years ago and observe the chokehold they have on not only national advertisements, but content creators for the sports as well. They surely weren’t lobbying and waiting for any significant legislation changes were they?

    • ehhh low stakes games are less about money and more about the thrill which is why my favourite poker is in video games, but not in directly poker video games like watch dogs poker minigame is amazing because you both have stakes(your progress depends on ingame money) and you also dont have any irl stakes(losing ingame money wont cause any real life consequences) thusly its the best combination of thrills caused by risk and also not actually risking anything important

      @Vletra@Vletra4 жыл бұрын
    • Familiar with that. Played a little poker with my friends, then started online. Was obviously new and tried to find my way. Played a free roll tournament which was either my first or second tournament online. Played something like 10 hours and won the fucking thing vs 3000+ opponents. First price was a million dollars! Then I realised that there's another section on the site - they called it 'real money games'... Felt a bit down but took the optimism of having won the whole thing as motivation to make a small deposit - only to notice that real money games are quite a bit different from just practicing poker with nothing at stake (which is pretty much like playing soccer with an imaginary ball). Never got anywhere near winning a tournament with that many players ever again. Still, I appreciate the lessons, most of all: poker IS a game of skill first and self-discipline is one of the most basic skills you need to have. I didn't have enough not to make costly irrational/emotional decisions from time to time so I gave up wasting money after a while. Playing was fun but I agree, you wouldn't accept any job with that kind of profit/salary per hour. Personally, I'd say that for the successful players both fantasy sports and poker are games of skill first. For the vast majority they are games of an absence of (sufficient) skill and luck can't counter that in the long run. Does that make them games of skill or gambling overall? I wouldn't put a label on it and believe both applies. As John Oliver said, no issue with making both legal but there need to be regulations to prevent gambling addicts from losing more than gambling money they got left to spend

    • I think it depends on if the loot can be converted back into money, and a lucky loot box can be converted into profit fairly easily. If so, you will feel tempted to spend more money than initially intended chasing a profit, hence gambling. If you can only loot the boxes and that's it, anything you would get stays there in the game, you were anyways gonna spend that money in-game and expect random items. It's not like you could've expected anything but a loss in matter of money.

Because of the skill I have, I've won more money than the vast majority of less skilled players, but that doesn't stop one of the from occasionally taking down a big tournament for 4-5 figures. And while in the long term, good players will come out ahead and bad players will fall behind, in the short term, I could get busted (and have) by somebody who called off 70% of their stack with Q6 against my KK. But that's gambling.

    @Gunman610@Gunman6108 жыл бұрын
    • +Gunman610 Here here! People need to realize just because there's an element of luck in a game it doesn't mean it's void of skill. Just like poker, just like fantasy sports.

      @lotte604@lotte6048 жыл бұрын
    • +Gunman610 by stadistical distribution, small football teams will sometimes win over big, favorite, allways on top teams. That makes Football a gambling game? The very fact you mention "Because of the skill I have, I've won more money than the vast majority of less skilled players" is the proof that in normal conditions, you have much more chances to win against someone lacking your skills, stacking odds in your favor. Nobody knows for sure whos gonna win before the match ends, but if the Barcelona goes against my old school football team, i would bet my house and my soul to Barcelona, because of THEIR SKILLS. Every fucking game has elements of luck, even chess (bad decisions, unseen pieces, even a sudden mental condition), Implying some games don't is idiotic.

    • +Julio Francisco Gómez Stoppello "That makes Football a gambling game?" Most ridiculous analogy ever. (1) The players are not betting. (2) They control everything, as opposed to things actually be based on luck and statistics (i.e. what card turns or is likely to turn). It's like saying betting on horses is the same as riding the fucking horse. Do you know anything about betting and gambling? lol

      @robinhoodOO7@robinhoodOO78 жыл бұрын
    • This is how you should look at games that are based on a mixture of luck and skill: In the short run, the law of large numbers don't really apply, and thus, luck is king. If it's a game about rolling dice, and I win on a roll of 1 to 4 and lose on 5 and 6, it's not out of the question that I could hit that 33% bad luck patch and end up losing despite the odds in my favour. After all, it's just one roll. In the long run, the law of large numbers will apply, and thus, skill is king. Taking the same game as above, over thousands and thousands of rolls, it becomes very unlikely that I'll end up a loser. In fact, I should be winning 2/3rd of the time in the long run. The skill element comes from only betting when I'm statistically more likely to win than lose, and make these correct decisions repeatedly. Thus, DFS and poker are both skill-based games in the long run.

      @lotte604@lotte6048 жыл бұрын
    • ***** Except in poker you eat away at the role luck plays by being more skilled. In DFS, you do it both through skill AND bankroll AND throwing hundreds of more darts than your opponents. To use an obvious example, if I'm in a tournament, there is only one of me at a table competing and I'm on level playing as every other individual. In DFS, the top something like 15% make up over 50% of all lineups. Thus, the reason they win more in the long run is NOT solely due to skill, which makes it substantially distinguishable from poker.

    • It's not gambling. In gambling you get at least some money back. The crate system is more like the "throw the ball to destroy the bottle pyramid" game (except you do it blindfolded), where you get most likely a cheap item that you could buy cheaper in a supermarket. Or if you are really REALLY lucky you get a hat with some glitter on it, which you just put on the shelf where it collects dust,just to impress some strangers for 3 seconds.

      @Ebob101@Ebob1018 жыл бұрын
