  • The fact that John Oliver and his team can pack more knowledge, humor, and honesty in one clip than most actual news organizations means either John Oliver is a news god descended from on high, or Fox, CNN, and MSNBC really are just that fucking terrible. Or maybe it's both.

    • While animal agriculture can certainly have negative environmental consequences, not all meat production methods are created equal. Some farming practices, such as regenerative agriculture, can actually have a net positive impact on the environment by improving soil health, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting biodiversity. Supporting these types of farming practices can help incentivize more sustainable and environmentally-friendly food systems. Regenerative agriculture is a holistic farming approach that seeks to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and reduce carbon emissions. It emphasizes the use of cover crops, crop rotation, and reduced tillage to improve soil structure and promote soil health. It also often incorporates livestock grazing, which can help to sequester carbon in the soil and improve nutrient cycling. In contrast to conventional animal agriculture, which often relies on intensive confinement operations and large amounts of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, regenerative agriculture prioritizes the health of the soil and the surrounding ecosystem. This can lead to a more resilient and sustainable food system that supports both environmental and human health. While regenerative agriculture is still a relatively small part of the overall food system, it has gained increasing attention and support in recent years as a potential solution to some of the negative environmental impacts of animal agriculture. By supporting farming practices that prioritize soil health and biodiversity, we can help to incentivize more sustainable and environmentally-friendly food systems.

  • *top is firsthand story about chicken plants, bottom is about the chickens!* I live in small town Kansas, and we fought like no tomorrow to keep a Tyson plant out of our town. They ravage farms with their runoff and smell for a mile radius. If our protesting didn’t work, many friends of mine (and my family!) would have lost a water source due to contamination, had crops ruined and had the stench of chicken plant radiating through our home. Also, my family rescued some chickens from a different plant b4 they were taken, and we got one with a LITERAL HOLE IN ITS NECK! They also had almost no feathers, peck wounds and overgrown beaks/broken beaks. Some didn’t even last a year and some are still kickin it. I have had a few chickens since I was little, just for fun, and they have personalities and souls just like a dog or cat would! I had one that would sit on my shoulder like a parrot, and no living thing deserves to be treated like chickens in plants!

    • surfitlive Unfortunately, even if it's brought up as an infringement on the farmer's right of free speech, the government &/or companies will state that they are free to speak however they want, but they will be held accountable for what they say(which isn't illegal). It's the reason I hate the whole "America is better, cause we have free speech" rhetoric directed at other countries. All speech is free, it's how much/little accountability people face for free speech. At most they could try and get them for falsifying information on how successful the business would be, except that even then, the companies would defend themselves with something along the lines of "we didn't say it would be successful for you; you just heard what you wanted to hear".

    • MonaGamie This is VERY if not EXTREMELY common in House commuttee votes. If you watch any C-Span show, the process goes like this: debate & push issues, all yea's cast, all no's cast, the head chair of committee says whatever he or she is in favour of won. The opposing people submit for a ballot count. The head of committee pigeonholes bill to a TBD time. We didn't get to see it, but I am sure that is what happened and they will give a vote on the bill if that is not what they were already gathering for. But yeah, happens to nearly all bills.

  • Thank you for this. I live in a rural area - with quite a few farmers - many of them are chicken farmers. And yes, many of them go to local farming markets - though, when I say 'many' - that 'many' is actually only about 10-15% of the farmers that I know or are acquainted with. They've tried telling me what all they have to deal with when it comes to contracts and the corporations that they basically do all of the work for, but none of them have been able to lay it out like this. I'd say that I'd share this video with all of them and try to start up some sort of local chicken market, but none of them have access to the internet. I'm thinking I should rip this video off of YT through any of the many 'rip video from KZhead' websites out there, convert it to a format that can be played on DVD players and hand out copies at the next farmer's market I go to here in town. Where it goes from there, I have no idea.... but this has fucking pissed me off enough to get up off of my lazy American ass and try to do ANYTHING that might help bring about some sort of change in these people's lives. Again, thank you. Thank you, John Oliver. =')

  • Here is a common corporate practice: You're farmer Joe. You own a tomato farm. One day a representative of Wal-Mart shows up at your house and says, "Hey Joe. I tried one of your tomatoes and was blown away. We'd like to stock our local store with them." You say, "Sure!" A few months pass and the rep returns, "Joe, your tomatoes are a hit. We'd love to expand into 3 more stores." You say, "I'd have to expand and buy new equipment." He responds, "Don't worry. It will be worth it for you. Just keep those tomatoes coming." A few months later the rep is back. "Great news Joe. We want your tomatoes in 100 stores. "Joe is stoked and gladly expands. A month later the rep is back again. "Well Joe, I'm sorry to say but we are ending our business with you. Good luck." Now Joe is stuck producing enough tomatoes for 100 stores with no buyer. Wal-Mart tells him, "I suppose we could help you out. We will buy your farm for half of what it is worth. As a bonus, we will let you stick around as an employee of Wal-Mart." Now Joe is doing more work for less money. I went to school with a guy who does the rep work and he would tell me how he would laugh his ass off after ripping off those, "Idiot farmers."

Because agricultural subsidies come from our tax dollars, and these farmers in particular even without these subsidies easily make 60K a year which is substantially above the poverty line. Do that and THEN we can be worried about all the unsubsidized chicken farmers at the poverty level and below.

There has to be better ways for people to make a living. The benefits of switching to a purely plant based diet are amazing. 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag involves terrible working conditions for many forced to work in that industry. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Animal welfare, obviously 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About."

The next U.S president is already establishing that the country will be run by the same sorts of people who are in the pockets of corporations. In other words, only voters seeing this would count.

Their main argument includes the ''fact'' that a University of Delaware survey concluded that 73 percent of the poultry farmers were satisfied with contracting business overall. While a system, wherein every three on four farmers benefit, at the costs of the fourth farmer seems not a good system, the survey they mentioned, seems to be published in 1998. 'Yes, National Chickin Council, a survey done 17 years ago perfectly represents the satisfaction of current farmers'. -_-
