As a veteran from the 82nd airborne. I can remember clearly being pulled into a hovel 6 miles outside of Baghdad. Took 4 rounds to my legs and was saved by an Afghan family whom I now haven't heard from in 14 months. This song touches my soul.

I had to pull a dead girl out of the rio grande in front her family and she wasn't the only one either. All because of the insane choices this administration has made. I try not to think about it but it hurts.

As someone born in 1950 I've lived through the rise of several great, influential, prolific song writers. Tom MacDonald is one of them. I am thankful for his gift. He's a voice for this era.

Addiction is a struggle that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I watched my little brother struggle with it. It very nearly killed him. He tried to take his own life (and came incredibly close to succeeding) because of the guilt he felt for putting his family through so much pain. He didn't think he was strong enough to fight it. He was fortunate though that he had family who refused to give up on him. He's been clean for over 17 years now. He is truly one of the strongest men I have ever known and I'm so incredibly proud of him. I hope you have people who love and support you. But in case nobody has told you this, I'm proud of you. It's not easy but it is definitely worth it. You are worth it. I wish you nothing but the best. God bless you. ❤️

I'm 56 years old and I don't listen to mainstream music. I don't listen to much rap but Macdonald has changed me. I am currently getting therapy for PTSD and I am trying a thing called Transcranial Magnetic Therapy. Give it a try man. I have tried all the meds without results, but this Transcranial stuff seems to be helping me. Hell I even found myself being happy a couple of times. Maybe it will work for you. I am so very very sorry for your loss!! Music has gotten me through the last 6 months since my mom, 64, unexpectedly fell and hit her head in our home and there was nothing we could do to save her, just tripped and hit back of her head on a ledge. Upchurch reactions got me through yesterday and Tom and above today while doing an activity we’ve always done together for the last 17 years and I wasn’t sure how I’d get through it. Flawd’s streams of music are incredible if you’ve never checked him out. Not sure if you’ve ever listened to Country but if you are spiritual as well TyHerndon is incredible!!

I wanted to drink so bad the last few days. My sobriety has been so good for me and my family my wife and this new life. I felt triggered and almost gave in. Then I remembered this song and listened to it 3 or 4 times in a row. I cried my f'n eyes out and now? I'm still sober and stronger! Thank you, Tom I can't explain the importance of your music. How can anyone put a price on something like that?
I quit drinking about 3 months now, I really wanted a drink so bad a few days ago. But, I didn't. Stay strong.

The layers that this song can represent is mind numbing. I'm from SW Florida and we're recovering from Hurricane Ian. I know this song isn't specifically about what my community is going through right now, but I can't listen to it without becoming overwhelmed with emotions. All I can think of is blue tarps on roofs and communities completely wiped out, but rebuilding from nothing. Tom, you are a truly profound songwriter and your music is so amazing. Wish I could like this a thousand times!! I honestly think this is your best song yet. Seventeen years ago, I sat in the ICU with my baby brother after the doctor told me he wasn't going to pull through this time. It was the 3rd time he had overdosed. I sat in that room for 3 days with him, praying for a miracle. God answered those prayers. He turned his life around completely. Next year, he'll watch his oldest daughter graduate from high school with honors. He'll be there to drop her off at college. She's a Daddy's girl, he is her hero and she will never know how incredibly close she came to losing him. This song will speak to so many people. You are an incredible artist and an inspiration, Tom. ❤️

I’ve never felt the need to ever comment on a video…literally this is my first comment on any video on KZhead, but I have to for this song. Tom has so many amazing, well written, and well thought out songs, however “Scars” by far is my favorite. It’s a song, in my opinion, that anyone can listen to and really relate on one level or another. It doesn’t matter where you come from, what walk of life you’ve come from, everyone can relate to this song. Not that you can’t in almost every song of his, but people from all walks of life can listen to this and reflect on their own lives.

43 years old here, i can relate to this song in many many ways in my life whether as a child into even some of my adulthood, i'm now a home health aid and Phlebotomist , a homeowner and single mother. most would call my life a battle field but i don't regret the fight or the battle it has made me into who i am today . A Survivor. not a victim.
This song hit so hard. It portrays how many of us that suffer from turmoil but somehow make it through to appreciate the survivorship and the marks it left. Damn Tom, I think this is one of the best you’ve made.
For over 70 years from the early 1900s all the way up until the late 1960s, men were proud of being able to go to work and deal with hell… Only to come back and smile at their wife and children. Today the wife is not at home anymore, the children are daycare. The man has no reason to be the head of household because there is no household… Just a mutual partnership with a marriage license and lease attached. The man’s wages were cut, the woman’s wages were increased and productivity went down. And now you’re seeing the after effects

Having a knife at my throat every day for nearly thirty years (I am now 38) was incredibly hard to bear to say the least. But if you let things get you as much as suicide it just proves you are weak. This song definitely hit different for me like it did for a lot of folks I see! I love reading all the different life stories and how a song affects them! None of us are alone! Very cool! And that's why I like Tom, he actually knows what his music does for his fans! It's why he's so genuine and truthful, he holds no punches and just spits facts. We all have scars and a lot of us have tattoos and we have them for a reason. Definitely not alone, just different stories, some very similar. Small world.
I understand.. all our stories are different.. each important.. so many scars.. many emotional from my father, mother, sisters, and brothers health issues growing up, as I had to be a man at 16.. to pay bills... and on into my 30's.. decisions, grief,.. scars from the many physical battles, in service and after.. so many scars from my own health problems, debilitating spine fractures, and all the surgeries after.. the final infection that almost killed me, med flighted into emergency surgery as my organs began shutting down in 2019.. I remember little of it.. just a cold silence in a black empty void and then a friendly, warm voice asking me if I was ready.. to pass on to what comes after.. NO... my wife, our children, grown into just adulthood.. I would NOT give up.. I loved them too much to just slip away.. Asking God to let me stay with them... then sleeping again.. only becoming "me",.. awake and aware in ICU rehab a few days later.. covered in surgical scars to go along with all the others.. but recovered, except for all the surgical wounds, my organs all working again.. What keeps me anchored to life, is the love of those in my life.. and they don't shun me for my scars.. they embrace me anyway.. Tom's music reaches me unlike anyone else does from the current era.. There is no shame in having scars.. we all have them.. just, some more than others.. each has a story, each is important.. as is Tom for sharing some of his with us..

I've never been an addict, but my brother is a recovering alcoholic & my step son's birth mother is a hard drug/alcohol user. 40 years of fighting cancer, not many internal organs left, a stomach that looks like it's been axed, but my scars are my warrior wounds, they aren't ugly like some would think, they are my story, glad to be still here listing to Tom, and hearing his story through his music, and watching his love story with nova, its time they got married .
I don't have the best home life. I had to grow up early. Got scars inside and out. Been through hell. Got back up after falling and kept going despite who shoved me down or talked crap about me. This one hit me right in the feels. Beautifully done Tom. Another truthful, raw, masterpiece.

I am a recovering alcoholic. in 2020 I found you're music through sober I had a complete mental breakdown. tonight after 9 months my partners dog lost his battle to cancer and crossed the rainbow bridge. To make my long story short, I grew up in an abusive household with an alcoholic stepfather. That is why the emotional scars will never go away.

@@thatticcydemon666 the navy sent me to AA and it did get me started in the right direction. But I found that I got more out of NA. you may find that a different but very similar approach is more helpful. Just a suggestion.
