GWM Tank 500 Hybrid 2024 review: A cut-price alternative to the new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series?

2024 ж. 14 Мам.
26 472 Рет қаралды

The 2024 GWM Tank 500 Hybrid has finally arrived in Australia, where it's looking to make the all-conquering Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series SUV's life a misery by offering a similar number of 4WD thrills for a fraction of the price. Yep, this new Chinese contender means serious business.
While it has the expected ladder-frame chassis and four-wheel-drive system with high and low range, the Tank 500 does set itself apart with a 'self-charging' hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for combined outputs of 255kW of power and 648Nm of torque.
But is there more to the Tank 500 Hybrid than being more powerful than the LC300 on paper? In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis attends the brand-new GWM model's local media launch to find out how well it measures up on the whole.

    • I'm here in the Philippines and there's lots of Chinese made cars here, and they hold their value pretty well, and seem pretty reliable. I bought a Chinese made 2022 Ford Territory and it's been superb so far. No issues at all. Plus, they have assembly plants in Vietnam and South America, as well as a parts warehouse in Thailand, so I'm not worried about support for a long time. even if things kick off over Taiwan. This new Territory is really well equipped, with adaptive cruise etc, a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled seats, free servicing. You can't beat it for the money.

  • Very Nice Price. Good spec level. Would suit a lot of Australian families being priced out by Toyota and Mitsubishi and Subaru. Decent load space for camping/touring, some 4WD capability. 7 Seats to cart the kids sporting teams around! Looks like a nice ride provided Chinese Quality control is up to it. Love the rear door and tyre on it! Dont know why Toyota have abandoned this in the Prado! No 12v adaptor to run fridge in rear'? Tyres are rubbish. Big chrome style grill is ugly though. Would have rather had a diesel PHEV for touring... What is vehicle range?

    @strider88888@strider88888Ай бұрын
    • I'm considering getting one, black with all of the chrome wrapped. Wheels and tyres would be swapped instantly, and suspension upgraded down the track. That rear wheel cover worries me though with how big you can go with the spare wheel/tyre.
