    • @@superninja252 As a Japanese and Korean teacher (The languages are similar so it's easy to cross reference almost every grammar and most syntax rules) I can tell you this isnt exactly true. Its more comparable to the U.S Confederate flag in that it has come to represent human rights violations but was only meant as a symbol of a nation. The rising sun flag was used for centuries and was used in advertisements until Japan committed such atrocities, however it was often used by fishermen to symbolize a good catch and for other menial things. Sort of how supporters of the confederate flag view it only as a symbol of southern U.S culture and a memorial flag the soldiers died for even if they disagree with slavery (as you should), while critics of it see it only as a symbol for slavery, white supremacy and war crimes against human rights. However, this isn't the best comparison (but is is the most common one as the rising sun flag is still debated like the Confederate flag, unlike the Nazi swastika or USSR sickle and hammer) because unlike Japan, the Confederacy explicitly supported human rights violations and it was in the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, while Japan has always stated the flag means much more and the atrocities should not represent the flag. In Japan the debate isn't whether or not it's tied to these things, almost all Japanese people recognize it was used in a fucked up way, but that it is a cultural symbol of Japan and their nationalism that is far more than the bad bit of history is was tied to, it was and is still used in festivals, fishing boats and some naval vessels. It is used as a symbol occasionally but it is often avoided due to Japanese culture being non-confrontational and passive. A common saying used when teaching Japanese culture is "The nail that sticks out gets hammered in" meaning don't stick out, don't offend people, and don't inconvenience them. A lot of Asia (especially Korea) sees this flag as offensive because to them it represents solely Imperial Japan and the war crimes associated with Japan at this time. We see this flag a lot in popular culture because a lot of people tend to agree that it does represent more than Imperial Japan although these associations are recognized and it's use is very explicit in a non aggressive and only cultural context, often it is also modified so that it isn''t the 16 ray flag from Imperial Japan. Edit: spelling

      @knotpye4214@knotpye42142 жыл бұрын
    • @@superninja252 I’m aware of it being used in JDM car culture frequently, and I know about the Manji symbol. The first problem is that Japanese used different variations of their flags/markings/etc like Germans did (Japan having variations with more than 6 sun-rays, and Germans using ‘almost’ literal Manji symbol in some occasions). The second, a big problem, is the lack of consciousness and awareness when using a symbol that has that close of a resemblance to the symbol that’s associated with such atrocity (the rising sun symbol).. You don’t see buddhists using Manji stickers on their cars, let alone see a German buddhist or buddhists living in Germany putting stickers/liveries of Manji signs on their cars, do you? The fact of the matter is that more Buddhists would be using/displaying the sign on public if it weren’t for the events during the WWII; I’m sure there are other reasons for not displaying the sign as much (as individuals), but majority of people don’t display the sign on public as much (outside of temples or outside of a religious event/purposes) because they are aware and conscious of what that symbol represented during a pretty recent past (less than 100 years ago).. And here we are, as a car people, just saying “oh it should have 6 sun rays’ or ‘it represents some branches of military’ and just plastering it on a car, ignoring how closely it resembles one of the variants of the rising sun symbol - No! That’s just a bad excuse, and that symbol should never even have been popularized to begin with, let alone, popularized from Japan. You don’t often see car people in Germany putting stickers of WWII (or current) Luftwaffe’s tail markings or a silver flying cross on their cars, do you? No, almost never. Yes, for Japan, it’s been a variation of their flag for a while, they still use it in military, and Manji symbol also being part of their culture for a while too, but that still no excuse in the least for both symbols to be popularized (yes, Majin symbol is popular in Japan, or was popular for a while during the 2010’s as far as I’m aware). There are people still alive who lived through and are still being haunted by that mess all over the world; camp survivers, veterans, victims, they are still around, and every time they see these two markings, they’re taken back to the events.. Even after their deaths, their family will continue to live, and what their parents, grandparents or great grandparents’ experienced would certainly affect them on some level for a while... It’s not about banning or censoring or things like that; extensive banning and censoring will eventually lead us to forgetting our history. It’s about being respectful, conscious, mindful, and reserving them (the symbols) for the correct occasions while remembering the wrongs. And if a usage of these symbols are necessary, using then correctly, carefully, and thoughtfully. They bare a heavy weight, it’s not a symbol to be just plastered everywhere because ‘JDM,’ and what not. Edit: Type-o, and spacing

    • @@knotpye4214 Maybe Koreans are more sensitive to it because they’ve been informed about the events, and maybe because they’ve dealt with them (Japan/Japanese) constantly for so long; I have no doubt that if people of other nationalities were to be informed about just some of what they did and what happened back then, they’ll all have at least ‘some’ things to say about the whole thing, including their flag/marking stuff (not that that’s even close to the most irresponsible and immoral thing they’re pushing). And the Chinese would be reacting more if it wasn’t for the communism being in place for so long. Honestly, I don’t even think they (the Koreans) are being that sensitive all things considered; have you ever been to Israel? You’ll hardly ever see a German car driving around. Also, you forgot about mentioning this saying of theirs (Japanese): “what stinks, cover it up with a lid and it will no longer smell,’ and ‘hide what sores the eyes.’ Just in case I cause any misunderstanding, I’m not saying anything about people who were not informed of the events, nor am I saying anything to Japanese as a whole. I’m just saying that there are some things that are fundamentally wrong with certain things that we accept as okay, and rather large population of people who are acting according to that standard; in the case of Japanese (Not All), acting deceptively hostile, sometimes despite being informed. Every culture and major historical events have their dark sides and have their characters, but that still doesn’t make things that are wrong not wrong, nor should a characteristics of a culture be used to justify what is wrong. Edit: Added

      @pigeonmail8374@pigeonmail83742 жыл бұрын
    • @@pigeonmail8374 I agree completely although I have to say I have never heard that saying, I can confirm there is an ideal similar to that in Japan though so I don't doubt it. I'm not defending Japan in any way, I think it's irresponsible that Japan behaved the way they did leading up to the 2020 Olympics flying the rising sun flag instead of the current national flag. And yea when I teach there is a section on the history of Japan and Korea and it does paint Japan in a not entirely unfair light, but perhaps demonizing them a bit more than necessary.
