  • SWIFTIES - I told him to do the lyric video instead of the short film because for people who aren’t already super into Taylor, the film can be a bit distracting and make the lyrics harder to pay attention to. Especially because there’s so much happening in a short amount of time. And it makes sense when you know the backstory, but for first-timer’s it’s overwhelming. So this gave a good listen of the lyrics, first lol

  • What gets me most about the line “I’ll get older but your lovers stay my age”, is that he literally gave her the excuse that if they had been closer in age, maybe it would have been fine, maybe it would have worked… but then every subsequent girl he was with was younger than the last…

    • i don't know what the real reason was for the breakup but it definitely wasn't her age when he kept doing age gaps. he just wanted to throw out an excuse that she couldn't change.

  • She does write a lot of songs about her life - in order to help her process what's happened - but she wants fans to interpret the songs for themselves. Not focus on the song being about her, even though fans love to do that. Taylor is an amazing person. She's full of life and puts her all into everything.

    @CoastDreamz@CoastDreamz8 ай бұрын
  • I personally think it's almost better when you can listen to her music and relate it back to your own life instead of thinking about hers and who she is writing about. But of course the gossip is always interesting too. I can't pretend I'm above it lol.

  • Taylor once said she would never make her next album sound like her last, with the exception of folklore and evermore, she calls them the sister albums. In fact, she dropped evermore 5 months after folklore, her fans, myself included were speechless that she did that. In fact, when she dropped both albums, she dropped all the songs, the whole album at the same time. She did this during the pandemic, to many she was a savior, helping people get through a rough time.

She just has such a lyrical way with words; “you kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath” “so casually cruel in the name of being honest” “I might be okay but I’m not fine at all” I could go on and on but I think that you get that she’s our poet laureate.

  • So a little back story behind this to fill you in based off your guessing near the end.. sometimes soon after they broke up she sat down at the piano and literally sang this song nearly exactly how it is here in the 10 minute version. Just sang it in the moment and felt it. Luckily for us, she records everything. So at the time her label had her cut the song down to around 5 minutes. But she “made the mistake” (her words) of mentioning in an interview once that it was originally 10 minutes and all the Swifties latched onto that and never let go lol.

    @mindlesslyhannah@mindlesslyhannah8 ай бұрын
    • In the documentary she says she was having an awful day at rehearsal and she was in this melancholy mood and just not fun to be around so at rehearsal she just started playing this same like tune or the same few bars and all too well came out of it. She just played and played and then went back to normal rehearsal. Her band joined in and after her mom was like by any chance did you record that? Sound guy was like yuppppp lol here you go and voila 10 minute version

Please make it happen

  • So Taylor never says who her songs are about (not all of them are about her own relationships) because she says she never wants to ruin the connection to the song for the listener (just as you said...she wants you to relate to it). But she's so raw and honest in her writing that she often includes details that Swifties are able to use to make connections to who(m) it might've been about.

  • As time has passed this song has become much more for her as well as for her fans than “about Jake Gyllanhall.” This song has connected fans in a beautiful way. She paints paints the picture in a beautifully bittersweet, relatable way. The raw emotion applies to any relationship that’s come to an end. I get frustrated when I hear someone say “they broke up ten years ago, she needs to get over it.” That’s not why she did the ten min version at all. This song was a fan favorite and she gave us the tmv because we needed it!

  • If you would like to hear the upbeat, sassy version of this breakup, you have to check out "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." Jake was into indie music and hated pop, so she made the catchiest poppiest song that would be played on the radio constantly so he couldn't escape it and it would annoy the heck out of him. I recommend watching the music video, and then watching the live version from the 1989 Tour (she changes it up, very impressive performance). As a side note, she also wrote the song "22" as a fun, carefree celebration of everything it means to be 22, since 21 was ruined by her relationship with Jake.

That one is about a long tern relationship that fizzled and it’s SO SAD and beautifully written. Totally different production too.

  • The line “you said if we had been closer in age maybe it would’ve been fine, that made me want to die” is likely a very personal lyric to her bc she dated John Mayer who was 32 and she was 19 and that relationship definitely hurt her a lot, and so for Jake to basically say the same thing a year or two later I’m sure greatly messed with her and her confidence.

  • I mean, what you're describing here is why she has the fan base she has. It's this ultimate ability to connect to the shared experiences of vulnerability. What I experience with my daughter being a fan is that whatever she's going through, there is a TS song she can listen to that's gonna make her feel less alone, give her solace or the strength to get back up. Taylor CONNECTS with her fans because she lays it out there in both brilliant and entirely relateable ways reminding us all that we have so much more in common than we think when we watch the news.

Both are about her experience with John Mayer, one from her perspective at the time the brief relationship ended, and the other from the perspective at the same age he was when everything happened. Both songs are extremely emotional, and incredibly powerful.

  • I loved this video! Thank you for approaching Taylor's music with an open mind. A little more context for All Too Well/Jake Gyllenhaal: He was always talking down to her, like he was sooo much smarter and more cultured. Typical pretentious douchebag stuff. She has several lines about how he didn't think she was funny, my favorite being, "You laughed at my dreams, rolled your eyes at my jokes" from her song I Bet You Think About Me. You might like that one - very country and sassy, and gives a clear picture of how stuck-up he was! That's why the part toward the end of All Too Well hits so hard, when she says, "And I was never good at telling jokes, but the punchline goes: I'll get older, but your lovers stay my age." You can SEE the anger on her face when she says the first part, like she's remembering how he always told her he wasn't funny. And of course, he continued to seek out relationships with younger girls despite citing the age gap between him and Taylor as the reason for their break-up. Additionally, her song The Moment I Knew is about her 21st birthday party, that he said he'd go to, but didn't show up to. That's another one that connects to All Too Well. PLEASE listen to her songs ***Dear John (Taylor's Version)*** and then ***Would've, Could've, Should've***. They are written about the same guy (John Mayer) but she wrote Dear John in the direct aftermath of their breakup, whereas Would've, Could've, Should've was written 10 years later. Both are fan favorites that I think you'll really like! Make sure you watch lyric videos for those too - every line is great and you don't want to miss anything. She dated John Mayer before Jake Gyllenhaal, in another age gap relationship. She was 19 and he was 32. He was emotionally manipulative to her, and the media largely blamed her for being with him instead of the other way around. Finally, you'll notice there's a lot of religious imagery in Would've, Could've, Should've; John Mayer used to live in a church with stained glass windows.

  • People try to wave off the age thing... but we all live in this culture where the power dynamics between a 20 year old girl and a 31 year old man are... just simply not equal. People don't need to be the same and I believe in polarity etc. etc. AND a girl in this culture who is 20 is NOT equipped with the experience, power and learned BOUNDARIES that come with age. Was it on the level of illegal? Nope. Was it a scary imbalance in power? YEP. Had she been 30, dating a 41 year old, much different scenario as a 30 year old has had time to grow and learn how to handle herself and protect herself and not be swayed as easily. It's not just 'age difference can work'. Of course it can. It's just that there's MUCH more to it.

  • I just went through all your T. Swift reactions and I LOVE THEM ALL! If you liked this one I bet you'll also like Dear John and Would've Could've Should've. Recommended back to back. Both r abt John Mayer (she was 19, he was 32 I think?) and Dear John is a song she wrote right after what happened, at 19; and Would've Could've Should've is her perspective later on, as a 32yo woman reflecting on this relationship.

  • ❤❤❤❤! She’s so multifaceted it’s crazy! Now you need to watch the short film she wrote and directed for this song. You think her writing is descriptive… I can guarantee there was some truth to emotions and actions in the film. Sadie and Dylan the actors do an amazing job

  • Ok mister man, great reaction but here are a few unsavory facts you should be aware of: a person's prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until they're in their mid-to-late twenties and that's what controls their impulsive behavior and rational thinking. Therefore even if someone is 'legal' it is still the older person's responsibility to not go into a relationship with someone who doesn't have the life experience or biology to make good choices. Also, this specific age difference where you have someone in their late teens and someone in their 30s can lead to the older person gaslighting and manipulating and abusing the younger person because they have more life experience. This happened twice with Taylor with Jake Gyllenhaal but really badly with John Mayer. According to Taylor, after Jake heard the entire Red album he contacted her and said that he could see their whole relationship play out and he thought it was a great album and he believes All Too Well is now more important as a song between Taylor and her fans. John Mayer wrote her a bunch of scathing nasty emails and tried to sue her for using his name in the song! So that should tell you how they handled it differently. Lastly I just want to point out for everyone to know that this large age Gap,particularly with underage girls, happens in the entertainment industry more than any other industry and it can be dated back all the way to the silent film era with Charlie Chaplin who was pursuing a relationship with a fourteen-year-old when he was in his 30s. All the way through the sixties the way that these older men in the industry would get away with having these underage girls as their Partners was by talking their parents into essentially signing them over to the man so that he could have control or guardianship of her and then it wouldn't be illegal for him to sleep with her and even marry these underage girls! This type of behavior was repeated over and over and over again for decades and still continues to happen. And finally the worst part about all of this in society is that, just like what happened to Taylor, everyone puts it on the younger female to be the more mature one who should make the relationship work or to make their Man act or behave in a certain way, even though they are the ones that are children essentially with less life experience! Remember young girls are always going to have crushes on older men,which is normal, however older men in their 30s/40s dating and sleeping with girls that still have 'teen' in their age are pedophiles. Period. There is a very real and traumatic reason that Taylor sings about female rage! Hope that gives you some perspective!

    • @@sarahcampbell1115 Thanks Sarah. As a survivor & an Advocate for the rape crisis center, i have very strong feelings on this. I'm just so exhausted by societies constant gaslighting & blaming females for everything! We have to learn all these self defense tactics & how to avoid being a victim, but why aren't we teaching boys to not rape? The scary statistic is that over 60%of men said they'd assault a women if they knew they could get away with it!

  • He broke up with her initially after 2 months because he realised she was faaaar more in love with her than he was with her that quickly. Then he missed her and they tried to rekindle it and they were off and on for a few more months. Taylor ultimately ended it then because she realised it was not good for her. I don't think he went into the relationship thinking it was just a fun thing and intending to bounce. But he still fked up a lot. Missing her 21st birthday was brutal. Playing yoyo with her emotions was not right.

  • I have a fun and unique way to react to stuff. A thing Taylor does is some songs tell a story as a group. 1) All too well (10 Minute Version), for example, is followed in the story by The Moment I Knew and 22. 2) Dear John and Would've Could've Should've are about the same person ten years apart. 3) Cornelia Street, King of my heart, Lover, The Great War and You're Losing Me make a great combo as they make a decent timeline of this particular relationship. (You could even add Maroon in there after The Great War, Paper Rings after Lover and/or Bejeweled before You're Losing Me) 4) And the most well known combination is of course the folklore love triangle, a story told through three perspectives, which is Cardigan, August and Betty.
