In this video, I react to Taylor Swift's music video/short film, "All Too Well."
I thought the video was amazing--moody, emotional, and beautifully shot. I loved the way the video editor managed to make Taylor's lyrics feel alive and tangible. This is a masterpiece of a short film, and I'm so excited to see what Taylor Swift does in the future... GIVE US MORE!

  • The song was written after her breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal. They have a 9 year age gap and dated when she was 20. That might fill in some story gaps for you. (Including why his house would be so nice and the choice of actors and their ages).

As you learn more about Taylor you will discover that this woman is a powerhouse at everything she does, and her vision is so specific she can make us all see and feel it. Also, the scene in the kitchen was entirely improvised. Sadie Sink is the real deal.

  • Fantastic review. I’m a 64yo man who has been a big TS fan for 14 years because she enabled me to connect to my 10yo daughter. When my daughter was 10 and my son 12, my wife called me at work and said “I’m leaving, you better pickup the kids from school”. I needed a way to talk to my daughter to take her mind of losing her mother. She would listen to TS, so I started to as well. It was a way for me to open a conversation with her and over the years the two of us attended several concerts together. When Red (TV) dropped, she called me from work and told me not to listen to it until she came over for dinner that night so we could listen the the album together. So, I have always thanked TS for assisting me keeping the three of us grounded and together. PS, my son was easy, he loved racing motorbikes. Both have finished uni now and working. She did nursing and he did mechanical engineering.

    • Idk, my grandmother was 10 years younger than my grandfather. I think what makes this relationship so wrong is how he treated her. Then, if he in fact threw around their age difference like the song suggests, shame on him even more. He knew how old she was and willingly participated. He decided to run when things got difficult, and then he selfishly blamed her for things she couldn’t control, like her age. I met my wife when I was 37 and she was 25. One, she’s an old soul, so I’ve never thought about our difference. Two, relationships are about mutual respect. When you truly love someone, you don’t treat them the way Jake treated Taylor. I get everyone makes mistakes, but his behavior in this relationship goes beyond mistake and into character flaw territory.

      @chiptovey6015@chiptovey60158 ай бұрын
    • Also, people blamed Taylor for years for “being a tease” and a “man eater” that couldn’t please Jake (or John Meyer before him). No one at the time said a word about these men in their late 20s and early 30s dating someone so much younger. It’s a pretty big jump forward between the reactions that essentially slut-shamed Taylor then to the MUCH more appropriate reaction now, with people being visibly uncomfortable with the extreme age difference. (One review channel actually stopped the video for a minute, they were having to deal with so much dissonance from loving the actor and “Dylan she’s a child!” Which of course was the whole point of the casting. Taylor was also great, making sure Sadie felt safe and comfortable with everything being filmed.)

In an interview she said that she actually wrote a ten minute version of it but "you can't have a ten minute song on an album lol". So obviously after hearing this, Swifties wanted to hear this ten minute version and because of the whole rerecording thing that she's doing she decided to release the ten minute version on the rerecording of the Red album. • Loved your commentary on this! Taylor doesn’t actually have red hair. She portrayed herself with red hair to look like an older version of Sadie. Also, this song is from an album named Red, so it might also be symbolism. In the end, 13 years later, you did the math that she would be 34 years old. Taylor isn’t 34 yet but she shows a time jump of 13 years because 13 is her lucky number that she uses a lot in her videos. The dialogue was improvised, that’s why it looks so real. Taylor reached out to Sadie and Dylan specifically for this short film and said she wouldn’t want to make it with anyone else. The actors were chosen deliberately because of their age and also how naive Sadie looks compared to Dylan, which is very intentional. If you notice in the end credits, the first three people credited are her (Sadie), him (Dylan) and her later (Taylor). But if you keep the credits rolling you’ll see in the end there’s another credit noted for him later. We didn’t actually see the face of an older Dylan, only the persons back with the scarf on. We assume it was Dylan but actually it was someone named Jake. That was also very deliberate because the person who the song is originally about is Jake Gyllenhall. There’s many times in the song where she mentions their age gap. She said he told her they would have been fine if they were closer in age, indicating this is why they broke up. But later she says “I get older but your lovers stay my age” which shows that wasn’t the reason at all but just an excuse he used. When this song came out, Jake Gyllenhall was in a relationship with an even larger age gap than him and Taylor.

This song originally was in the Red album (2012), but it was a shorter, 5 minute version of it. This version of the Short Film is called All Too Well (10 Minute Version), which is the last song on Red (Taylor's Version), the re-recorded version of Red released in 2021. Taylor is showing not only the stuff that happened with her, but also how she sees and views the situation now she's an adult. Edit: another interesting thing you pointed out is the contrast between blues and oranges in this video. Everything that represents him is blue, cold. She is red, orange, intense. In that film, we get to see Stanwyck's face/reaction as she watches through the window. For yourself you may want to go watch the lyric video then come back and do this again just to see all the little Easter eggs in the lyrics! In 2012 this was 5 min long in Red, when she rereleased red Taylor’s version she included the full length original song. She is 33 now, 13 it's because it's her favourite number and when I say favourite, I mean she is absolutely obsessed with it XD Taylor's blonde, she had red hair just because Sadie has red hair and she really wanted to cast Sadie and Dylan, she even said that if Sadie or Dylan said no, she isn't sure she would've made the film. PS: There are rumours about another short film being for one of the songs from he next rerecorded album which comes out July 7, and also another music video directed by her. But they're just rumours, nothing's for sure.

You picked up on many of the details Taylor wanted to portray in this film. The actor she was involved with in 2010 was Jake Gyllenhaal who was 30 at the time.

  • the fact that you IMMEDIATELY knew that it was shot on 35mm is so crazy to me ahaha edit: i should mention that in addition to Taylor just being an amazing director, her cinematographer is so extremely talented. her name is Rina Yang, and she deserves so much credit. she’s talked a lot about the intricate details she put into this short film, from the choice to use film, to the way they did certain shots, to the lenses, to the color palette, etc.. there’s a reason taylor’s been using her as a cinematographer ever since this video.

I watched her from her beginning as a young lady in country music genre then watched her transition to Pop music, and now this new and exciting venture into films. Taylor,you deserve all the accolades and awards and your talent surpasses your diligence and hard work, but not by much...they are neck in neck on the home stretch. You go girl! And now it seems you have found your true love which we are all happy to enjoy along with you. Have never known an artist to be so loved by her fans as you are and even that you deserve because you love your fans like no one else in music that I have ever witnessed and I am an 76 year old lady into music since a 10 yo child...so all my life, y'all, all my life!TY,Taylor for the great joy you bring to the WWW.❤❤❤

Also, it's adorable how welcomed you feel by Swifties. You've got some very good insights and I predict you're only going to become a bigger Swiftie every time we see you. Don't worry about taking a course - your commenters will make sure you know everything about...EVERYTHING (myself included). SwiftLore is a blast and part of what makes being a Swiftie so fun. But my favorite thing, always, is watching non-fans/listeners/haters/etc. fall in love with Taylor's artistry and craft when they *actually* listen/watch. Subscribed! :)

  • Finally its here, been waiting for this. About the light, the warm color represents Sadie while the Blue tone represents Dylan. The fighting scene is a first/one time shot. All too well was released in 2012. When she wrote this song, the lenght was 10-12 minutes so she had to cut it down with Liz Rose, another songwriter... fast forward to 2021, when she had the opportunity to rerecord her albums, its her chance to release the 10 minute version and decided to create a short film. The storyline in the MV is inspired to her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal with 9 year age gap.

You are better now for it.” But I will say this is a perfect example of gaslighting and how I never realized how much ex’s gaslit me during arguments like this. So raw and organically done…I can totally see 20 year old Taylor and 29 year old Jake having this exact same fight in real life. FELLOW LADIES, (or men who’ve been in our places before) please know you are worth all the happiness and HEALTHY love you deserve and that you’re not insane for feeling the way you feel. No one can deny your own emotions and don’t let anyone, especially those you love, make you feel this way. • Some lyrics that really paint the picture of who he was: “You were tossing me the car keys, “fuck the patriarchy” keychain on the ground.” It’s almost as if he has put on a facade that he respected women but continued to disrespect her (I.e throwing her the car keys and making her pick them up instead of giving them to her) Another was “when your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones,” which is a slang New York term that describes wealthy people who pretend to not be wealthy to appear relatable and hip. This song is about Jake Gyllenhaal, which checks out. Another song that was written about her relationship with Jake is “I Bet You Think About Me ft. Chris Stapleton.” I highly recommend putting it on your list of videos to react to! It has much more humor…but still has amazing editing. :)

Glad you are enjoying it. the age difference was deliberate. Taylor was 20 and the guy was 28 I think so the age difference between Sadie Sink and Dylan was purposeful to reflect that. She was waiting for him at the fancy party and he never showed, and he never showed up for her 21 birthday. That was when they were still dating, but shown in the video after he ended it. Apparently Jake tends to like dating younger women and it seems like he liked keeping their relationship almost as a secret. She had red hair at the end because Sadie has red hair. Taylor's hair is blonde. She didn't actually write a book. That part was symbolic for the songs Taylor writes - which are like stories in themselves.
