  • I worked at the Walmart quicklube while in college for mechanical engineering. The other 3 guys that worked there evenings and weekends were also college students and we were all car guys. We never had an issue. So you should say SOME of the places are bad, not all. Some have decently smart people that know what they're doing. We did oil changes and tires, repairs, replacements, rotations etc.

    • Maybe things have changed. In college I worked for Sears doing minor things on cars. Oil and battery changes, points and plugs, shocks, tires. Never had any problems doing that. Now most cars do not need much and it is hard to find the engine under all the the shrouds. Did lots of work on my own car. They did have some mechanics that did some of the more demanding work and we could always ask them if we were not sure of what we were doing. Really how much education does it take to change the oil and filter on most cars.

We had a section in engineering, where the ones that had messed up in some way got sent to work on small projects that upper management didn't care about that much or maybe didn't understand. I had to sell my home as a consequence of my divorce, and now live in a rental apartment. So I have no place to either change oil myself, or store the oil change equipment. And, there is no place to recycle the used oil. K-mart used to allow you to do that, but the local store (as mostly all others) closed. Garages at one time were required to take used oil, but I don't know if that's true now.

  • My niece had exactly the same experience at Walmart. They failed to actually put heavy oil in the engine and it seized just as she left the parking lot. They did pay to put a new crate engine in. One of the biggest problems is the fact that most high schools no longer have any VOTEC training... No auto shop, No wood shop, No electric shop, etc. Our school systems are failing us in so many ways... Sadly no competent mechanic wants to do the oil changes because most are paid on commission, and there's just no money in it. Of course some places use it as a basis to charge you even more money doing additional work that's not needed. The entire system is just so broken.

    • My dealership used to try to sell me the air filter change special. For only $100 bucks they would charge your engine and cabin air filters. I can buy both filters for around $30.00 and put both of them in just a few minutes. The longest part is getting stuff out of the glove box and putting it back. The $100 at the shop only covered parts and labor. They would tack on a fee for shop supplies, hey! I used a paper towel to wipe my hands on after doing the engine air filter, Then there is the environmental fee. I can throw the old filters in the trash can with the best of them. I couldn’t understand it because it was always a good running car. My daughter was taking it on a long trip to Louisiana so I wanted to change the oil. I do all my own oil changes so I have a 6 qt drain pan ( my car takes 5 qt)and I’m under the car and open the drain plug.Right away I knew something wasn’t right. The oil just shot out of the drain hole and filled up the drip pan and I had at least a quart all over the driveway before I got the plug back in. When I emptied that, I opened the drain again and got another 2 qt before it stopped. I went back to the dealer and told the service manager. He pulled the paperwork and evidently they do the courtesy check of the fluids and top them off. He said his best guy did the service! I said well there’s a problem somewhere because I had 4 extra qts of oil in my engine. He looked at me like okay, so what do you want me to say. I said I’m just letting you know and left. I was just very lucky I changed the oil because it could have blown the engine on my daughters trip which was around 4000 highway miles. I would be out big money for a new engine.

  • I’ve had a couple of oil changes done at my local Walmart. Also I purchased 2 sets of tires there. Only problem was that they put the wrong tires on my truck, so they had to change them.

  • They do the same to me!! Mercury GM when they tell me is done I CK the oil stick and it was crazy more oil and not the full synthetic that I order. Have a bad moment because the manager said keep saying that that's the oil that I order! So after 15 minutes and the shop manager looks in to it, they accept to do it again! Never go back!!

  • Guy I worked with at Walmart got transferred from bike assembly to the quick lube. He was there 2 weeks and forgot to put oil in a car and the plug back in. Guys car got about a mile. They fired him on the spot. Walmart had to buy the guy a new engine plus some more.

  • I stopped going to walmart for oil changes a long time ago. I use a local mom and pop garage near my home. They always do a good job and I don't have to worry that they screwed up.

  • It’s not just walmart. I took my 2018 crv to the Honda dealer for an oil change, they advertised synthetic oil changes for x amount of money. Up to 5 quarts. Three times they put 5 quarts in but, it only takes 3.7 quarts. I had to drain 1.3 quarts out to get the dipstick between the lines. I complained the first and second times the third time I checked it there and made them drain it out. Never again.
