In the Game of Thrones books, the Blackfyres were the greatest enemies of House Targaryen for a hundred years. What happened in the Blackfyre Rebellions and the War of the Ninepenny Kings? Why did Daemon Blackfyre rebel against King Daeron II? How were Bittersteel, Bloodraven and Shiera Seastar involved? Is Young Griff a Blackfyre? What do the Blackfyre Rebellions mean for the fate of the Iron Throne and Westeros in the end of ASOIAF?

  • Fun fact: Robert Baratheon and Rhaegar Targaryen were literally second cousins. Robert’s Rebellion was kind of just another familial civil war.

    • That's pretty much every civil war during feudalism. It's the reasons the Ottoman Sultans slaughtered all their siblings when they inherited the throne.

      @redrave404@redrave4043 жыл бұрын
    • @@redrave404 After a while, they just house arrest their siblings in these buildings and palaces. So, if the current Sultan died without any (male) heirs or the kid in question is on the young side, at least you have a couple of appropriately aged 'spares.' Also on the plus side, not many people want to commit familicide, even if it's for the 'good' of the realm, so this was a 'compromise' of sorts.

When he was cut from Season 5 it was regarded as a good call. I was always one of those that defended Young Griff. And then Season 8 happened, and everybody realised "Oh, I guess Griff is more important to the story then we thought" there was a post in the subreddit basically saying that removing Young Griff is the source for Dany's plotline falling apart. Turns out the incredibly meticulous author has an intent of grave importance for a character that was foreshadowed several books ago lol. And at some point, I believe there was even a trial by combat against Naerys, which Aemon obviously won. I've always believed that Daemon was the true heir for a few reasons 1. Aemon's character from what we know literally has no flaws and we know George doesn't write perfect people. 2. His mother was distantly related to the King just like how Griff likely comes from the female line. Henry VII became king after living in exile his entire life when he won one battle with the unpopular Richard III just like how Griff is positioned to gain ground in Westeros fairly easily. When Danyaerys burns down Kings Landing I guess it'll almost be like she's interrupting the natural flow of history by killing the person who ultimately won the Wars of the Roses. Which will lead to Brans position as the end of history kind of king.

Two different lines descended from a king fought over the English throne for thirty years, and it eventually ended when the two lines married into each other and became one. As targeryan dreams usually lead to their downfall as they misrepresent the information to fuel false ambition. The term 'slayer of lies' could also have a double meaning which I've not heard anyone else mention thus far. Yes it could refer to someone who slays a liar. But it could also refer to a liar known to kill, that her slaying is based on lies. It seems to me like that could be a more convincing and shocking twist which would reframe the characters actions up to that point in a very fascinating way.

  • The most crazy thing is that the Blackfyres really were the rightful kings of Westeros, regardless of whether Daeron was a bastard or not. This is because they were descended not from the line of the younger brother Viserys II, but instead the elder brother, Aegon III, as Daena was his daughter. The Dragonbane's line had died with Daeron I and Baelor as neither had children, which is why Viserys II and later Aegon IV became king but by being legitimized, it meant that Daemon should have been first in line for the throne. Despite all that, I fully agree with people who say the peaceful Daeron II and his descendants were much better than the warlike Blackfyres would've been. Daeron II and his descendants, Aerys I, Maekar I, Aegon V, Jaeherys II and initially Aerys II) were good kings and under their rule the realms suffered very little conflicts (and most of the ones that did happen were Blackfyre rebellions). The Blackfyres on the other hand would've reignited the Dornish War, either lost or won and then kept picking fights with others until they lost, and the Targaryen rule would've ended much sooner.

  • I have to admit, I'm kind of hoping for a Jon/Griff/Danaerys dynamic (eg. Star Wars - Luke/Han/Leia). It would also tie into an inversion of the Targaryen three-headed dragon. And looking at real history, there was a real incident at the beginning of Henry VII's reign where a boy called Lambert Simnel was trained by an Irish priest called Father Symonds to believe he was the Earl of Warwick (a rival claimant with a stronger lineage). Of course he wasn't, but his charisma won him a small army from some minor lords and dissatisfied peasants. Unfortunately, this ragged group was no match for Henry's professional army. But after defeating this threat to his rule, instead of executing Lambert and his supporters, Henry invited them to dine with him. At the banquet, the lords were astonished to discover Simnel was serving them! But this was not humiliation - Henry had given him a full-time job in his household, where he did very well for himself (he was in recorded as having risen to the rank of Royal Falconer). This rare show of mercy led Henry VII to be called 'The Solomon of English Kings', & Lambert's surname is where we get 'Simnel Cake' from (apparently of his own invention, a spicy fruit cake served at Easter topped with 11 marzipan balls [to represent the 11 faithful disciples])

This helps to trigger the Blackfyre Rebellions, and the century-or-so of bloodshed that ultimately leads to the fall of House Targaryen. And Shiera Seastar seems to support this stance, in her own way... This is part of a major reason why I think that Quaithe is actually Shiera Seastar. Because while Bloodraven is trying to cultivate Bran Stark and Jon Snow, it makes all sorts of sense for Quaithe (or Bloodraven's former girlfriend, Shiera Seastar) to be cultivating Danaerys Targaryen, to defeat the last Blackfyre pretender (She specifically tells Dany "Beware the Mummer's Dragon" at one point, in the books), and retake the throne, while also preparing Westeros for the coming Wights. It's all one gigantic conspiracy, by the former lovers, from opposite ends of the world (Bloodraven, from beyond the Wall; Quaithe, from the Shadowlands) to overcome the approaching apocalypse, not just of Westeros, but of the entire world! And also to finally defeat the Blackfyres, and put a proper Targaryen heir on the Iron Throne. If Bloodraven, as we know for certain, is Bryndon Rivers, then it only makes sense that his counterpart, Quaithe, would be his former "soulmate," Shiera Seastar. They serve different Gods, but seemingly have the same goal, from opposite sides. Finally... At no point is Shiera Seastar pronounced "dead," in the storyline of Ice and Fire, either by GRRM, or by any of the in-story characters. She has a proven history of "bathing in blood," as some sort of ritual to preserve her youth (immortality, perhaps??). The first rule of fiction is this: "If a character is not pronounced dead, by the author, or the narrative, then he/she is not dead. Period. Shiera Seastar is, by this rule, not dead. So where can she be? Why is Quaithe so mysteriously attached to guiding Danaerys, through dreams, toward the Iron Throne? And isn't it just a little bit suspicious that she uses "dream prophecies" to push Dany onward, in a similar fashion that Bloodraven uses them to push Jon Snow, and Bran, forward?? Bloodraven and Seastar are still working as one... to save the entire world from death. You heard it here, first!

    • People sympathize with Jon Snow a little too much. While catelyn may have given him shit back in winterfell but he did have a full family around him. He's a little too touchy about things. Let's compare the royal growing up of Jon in winterfell to Pisswater bend growing up of Gendry and other hundreds of nameless bastards throughout the realm he was much better off. Also it is well known that bastards in south get much more shit from their family than bastards in North. I don't even think he deserves the sort of value he's given.

    • Perfect Theory, that sounds completely reasonable! And I can't thank Bloodraven and Shiera enough, as a Targaryen supporter, for saving the House and also the Westeros.

  • 14:52 While yes, the Blackfire Rebellion could've been stopped had Daemon at least been imprisoned, I still feel that killing Aenys and Haegon Blackfire (especially Aenys) was a bit much. Haegon maybe, since he had just surrendered and maybe the idea of rebellion was still heavy in his mind, but he killed Aenys after essentially betraying him by breaking his promise, which is enough to incite rebellious thoughts in others.
