Oldtown was a trade center of Westeros before and during Targaryen reign. The seat of the Faith of the Seven was there before the Great Sept of Baelor's Construction which is why Aegon the First was crowned in Oldtown. It was originally even thought that Aegon would simply make his capital there.

Too kind to your household and they'll seek to supplant you, chipping away at your legitimacy before the final blow. • @@explosivereactionstv7414 Ideally, yes. Something I think worth mentioning is the Han dynasty emperors tended to die short and 'abruptly' for no good reason, regardless of whether they were mainly seen as good or bad after they passed away. You can imagine that tends to foster quite a bit of paranoia for Han emperors in general. Another example is sparing a prince that nearly became emperor. If you kill him, that would spark a rebellion and princes retreating to their base of power. If you leave him be, he will plot to overthrow you not once or twice. Both from memory has happened. What the Tokugawa Shogunate did was make it mandatory for his daimyo to have his family live in the defacto capital of Edo, whilst the respective lords spent most of their time governing their domains.
