I’ve been watching this on my lunch break for the last 3 weeks 😂, it helps me feel away from being inside a huge building
That's great to hear, I appreciate that comment. I do the same actually😁👍
Sooo satisfying to watch. Makes me want to cook something over a fire right now. I especially like that not a word has been spoken throughout the whole thing. I will try something similar this winter.
So happy you enjoyed it!👍🔥
I followed this pretty closely and it was perfect thanks for a beautiful reciepe and well edited video. You set the right mood here 🙂
Thanks so much for the kind feedback, I really do appreciate you taking the time to do that. Take care
Beautiful spot and a great-looking stew doesn't get any better than that
Couldn't agree more it was a great time. Thanks for watching 👍
thank you for not adding a ton of salt to it, and just letting the natural flavors come through!
You’re welcome! Oversalting is a problem, I feel like the amount of sodium in the bacon is probably enough for most people. I added more pepper though😁
@@Woodswalker1965 i tend to use a low sodium salt bacon, but i agree most bacon has more than enough salt. Most people don' realize that salt is a mineral not a seasoning. and doesn't add flavor while cooking like an herb will. it's a leavening agent and flavor enhancer. which is why it's added to things like carmels, chocolate, fruits, meals After they've been made. which is why salt belongs on the table not in the food while it's being cooked. especially since everyone has a different flavor taste and need for salt. not only that the guidlines for salt intake per day is about 1 tsp, which we get naturally from unprocessed foods.
You could taste it?
@@Icutmetal taste what? the natural flavors of the dish? if food is cooked is prepared properly you will be able to taste everything that is put into it. Or are you refering to the taste of the the salt? why couldn't you taste salt? salt has a very distinctive flavor. and can be Very overbearing when you use too much of it. for instance. when you have french fries. if they are over salted, all you taste is the salt. not the potato. you might as well just open a container of salt and swallow it. I won't go into how much salt is necessary for dietary needs and such. I will say, that with an all natural diet, the average person would still exeed what we need for a healthy diet. with the exception of when we are sweating. And most people don't eat all natural diets. we eat processed foods which are all high sodium. even the low sodium. bc all that means is that it's lower sodium than their regular stuff not actually low sodium. Salt is Not a seasoning. it doesn't add flavor when it's cooked longer with food such as thyme, basil, etc. salt is a mineral ( google it if you don't believe me.) it is a leavening agent ( will help in how fluffy or flat your baked goods are. ) and a flavor enhancer. brings out the flavor of foods. think caramel & chocolate. since it's not a seasoning but a flavor enhancer and won't change the flavor over time. salt should be left on the table. this lets each individual put on as little or as much as they want, and as much as their persoanl dietary needs allow. our dr constantly ells my husband to cut down on his sal intake, but he doesn't. so i tell him he can enjoy less now forever, or the same now and none later the choice is his. he chose less. he tells me to increase my sodium intale. i had to start eating foods higher in sodium, bc salty food just are unappealing to me. food should be enjoyed and savored not eaten to survive.

I have been wanting to make a campfire beef stew in my new campfire dutch oven, but because I always braise my beef stews in red wine at home, I was afraid the acidity of the wine would strip the seasoning on the cast iron. My mind didn't even go to using beer! I feel like an idiot now haha. ...Thanks for the inspiration!
Red wine with beef is delicious but I'm sure you will enjoy the beer braise. Thanks for watching and commenting and let me know how your stew turns out!👍

Great video! What hatchet were you using to split your wood?
Thanks very much! I believe I was using the Gransfors Small Forest Axe on this video or perhaps the Gransfors Outdoor Axe. Both fantastic tools👍
Great video. Interesting concept without any speaking, it was entertaining and calming. I would not hate it if you'd posted an ingredient list and any critical notes down below, along with your other links. Just sayin... I'm "working" from the house today and just watched your vid on making bannock. While waiting for my first batch of bannock ever to cool, I decided to watch another vid and choose this one! BTW, the steel pans are sold out. :-( I cooked my bannock in a Pathfinder stainless skillet on the stove top. Here's a tip of the coffee mug to you and the Missus. If you have time to answer it, here's a question for you, or anyone else to chime in on. I have a Lodge cast iron dutch oven that has a domed lid rather than the flat one used on a campfire. It would work fine for this stew recipe, but not for baking. I know you can turn the lid upside down in a pinch, but then I'm not looking to totally rough it! Since I'm looking for an excuse to get another dutch oven that has a flat lid, I've been eyeing the flat top, cast aluminum ones that don't have legs. I can drive to my deer camp where I'll use it the most, so saving weight is a factor, but a secondary one. My thinking is that the aluminum one will fair better while stored in camp, where it will be subject to a vast range of heat and humidity in Central Texas. Any thoughts pro or con?
Hi Joel thanks very much for watching and for your kind words. I usually don't post recipes because I myself don't use them really. I'm cooking by eye and the video should show basically what I'm doing, I hope that's sufficient. Now it's up to you to put your own spin on it😀. As far as a aluminum Dutch oven, I don't have any experience with them but I'm sure they work well. It shouldn't rust like a cast iron pot so that's a good thing. Take care and I hope you enjoy the other vids and future content.
Getting my first dutch oven tomorrow. Is it okay to use it over open flames like that? I mostly see it used over (and under) coals. I'm guessing that will be ideal, but you know... fire awesome.
You can totally use a fire. It takes a bit of practice to regulate the heat. Enjoy the Dutch Oven and cook something awesome!👍
Bravo. Im doing it exactly as demonstrated this week. Quick question, how long did u simmer both before and after you added the potatoes?
Thanks very much. I simmered the stew for about 90 min total and added the potatoes in the last 30 minutes approximately. Email me a pic or tag me in Instagram of the final product!👍🔥🏕️
"
Finally someone cooking over a fire that has some skill with knives, fire and cooking. Half the videos on this subject are people trying to get views. And that's ok the videos are just hard to watch. Good stuff!

Yup it sure was lol! Thanks for watching!

Thanks very much for watching ✌️😀
Quick question -where did you get that blue barrel container? Looks lie something I need !
You can buy these barrels at any good outdoors store. Commonly called canoe barrels. Thanks for watching👍
Commonly available on FB Marketplace too
How long do you stew it for once everything is in the pot? Also what size is the pot?
I cook it until all the veg is soft and tender, probably about an hour. I think the pot is a 6 quart . Thanks so much for watching!
On the veggies was that flour before the Guinness? Awesome videos by the way! Will be trying this out for the first time this week!
Thanks very much! Yes the flour when combined with the fat from the bacon becomes a thickening agent. Makes it more stewlike. Let me know how yours turns out👍
nice work, was the white powder flour?
Thanks for watching! Yes I use flour to thicken the stock. More flour makes it more thick. It needs to be combined with a fat or oil to bind and not get lumpy. Take care👍
Hey, great vid. How long did you cook it for once it was all put in the oven?
If I recall about 1- 1 1/2 hours on a simmer. Thanks for watching and let me know if you try it out!
Looks wunderbar and thank you for the upload. Question if I may please - how long was your stew on the fire? In South Africa we call this a Bonsai Bazaar (small festival although more chosen for the alliteration).
Thanks for watching my friend! If I recall the stew cooked for about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs at a simmer. Things like weather, wind and temperature will impact cooking times. Enjoy your next Bonsai Bazaar👍🔥
@@Woodswalker1965 You know I wonder if this is a 60's thing or are you just a mighty fine fellow. I was born in 64. People from that era have more respect for life and we enjoy things even if they take time like Dutch Oven Cooking in The Great Outdoors. Thank you for your answer my dear fellow. I was thinking about 4 hours in total. Wishing you a most outstanding day. Blessings from Cape Town. 💖
I'm a child of the 60s my friend.👍 As you guessed total time was several hours but the final stewing or braising was about 2 hrs. Much beyond that sometimes the vegetables get a bit mushy. Take care and enjoy life!🌲🔥👍
@@Woodswalker1965 Same to you and now I am going to "steal" some more of your outdoor wisdom. You must forgive. Until the next encounter. D 💚
Great video! I’ve always loved cooking outdoors over open fire . I ll definitely be trying this stew. Bought a 12qt Dutch oven couple yrs ago and over cooked each recipe I tried , so I packed it up and forgot about it . After winter it’ll be back to drawing board .. trial and error . What knife do you use ?
As I was, I discovered your gear in description 👍🏻 new sub here!
Thanks for watching and subscribing, let me know how the stew turns out😉. Take care👍
Wow lots of instructions 😂😂😂😂
What is that sprig at the end? Also, the flour - roughly a cup? Looks great!
I believe I added fresh Rosemary to the dish but Thyme would work as well. Probably less than 1 cup of flour, about 1/2 a cup. If you add more it would be thicker of course. Hope that helps👍
No taking, straight cooking can’t beat that. Food looked awesome right up till the damn mushrooms went into it!!! 😂 Good stuff
Haha can't please everybody 😂😂😂 !
