  • I’ll never forget when this happened. I always watched Jeopardy! with my Granny when I was growing up and we became huge fans of Ken. Even on days that I couldn’t go to her house to watch it, we would sometimes talk on the phone during the show or right after it would end to talk about his streak. We watched practically every one of his episodes together in some form. On the day that he lost, I had just gotten out of school and was watching it at my Mom’s house. As soon as it was revealed that he had lost, my Granny called me and we were both in absolute shock. We couldn’t believe it. Ken had become like a hero to me so I even cried a little bit. Even as I got older I would still go to my Granny’s house to watch Jeopardy! as often as I could and she would always say that she wanted me to try and audition for the show. She passed away in October of 2016 and one of the last things we did together was watch Jeopardy! a few days before she passed. This show will always hold a special place in my heart and Ken’s run will always bring back great memories of spending time with my Granny. Now that Alex is gone too, it feels especially painful. I will always be thankful for this show and for Alex for giving me years of great memories of bonding with her. Maybe one day I will make it on the show just like my Granny always wanted so I can honor her memory. Even if I don’t, thank you Alex and Jeopardy! for all of the memories. The producers will never know how much of an impact their 30 minute long program has had on my life. RIP Granny and Alex.

  • I was a two-time champion on a quiz show back in the 70's. Most people have no idea how quickly the pressure builds. I can hardly imagine what it must have been like for Jennings. This is the first time I've seen this clip and I immediately said H & R Block. To me it seems easy: four months was the big clue. People do not send Christmas presents via Fed Ex in September, but they do start filling out tax forms in December, if they are lucky enough to get their W-2's quickly. (Say they get their last salary on 12/15.) I'm not gloating. I made an equally avoidable mistake on the final question in my third game and the audience in the theater gasped, assuming I would get it because most of them had, and I had breezed through my first two games. They didn't know what I knew. From the testing sessions and the early morning practice, I knew Sascha (I will never forget that name) was going to be my most formidable opponent of the ten potential opponents for that day's tapings, and he was. I was nervous even as the game started. Still, it came down to the final question. The category was Tales of the Sea. Art James practically read a whole Cliffs Notes summarizing a plot and then asked what book the plot he had read referred to. Just like with Mr. Jennings, I was fixated on the wrong thing, Herman Melville. The book he had summarized was _Lord Jim_ . I will never ever forget _Lord Jim_ . I had already won $1500 (the equivalent of about $9000 today) and I got a vacuum cleaner for my mother as a parting gift, so I can hardly complain. Jeopardy has much more pressure because speed is as much of the essence as knowledge. The multi-week consecutive champions are amazing, none more so than Ken Jennings.

Say what you will about Nancy Zerg, but you cannot deny that what she did was historic and the fact that she even managed to create a non-runaway for Ken is impressive in and of itself, as only like 8 or 9 other contestants in his run managed to do that!

  • In a later interview, Ken said that it was the perfect Final Jeopardy question to lose on, because as soon as the episode aired, he got advertising offers from both H&R Block and FedEx. He said that, had he gone out on a clue where the response was "what is Kazakhstan," he wouldn't have been so fortunate.

He is actually coming back I believe in November until the end of December so at least he's coming back temporarily but I wish he was permanent.

  • A couple things stand out to me about this moment. The first one is Ken's facial expression, and the way it says, "...it had to end sometime." The other is how Ken went to congratulate her before Alex had even finished speaking, and also how he quickly cleared the dais so she could have her moment as "The Giant Killer", as Alex called her.
