Magic: The Gathering - Inside the World's Most Played Trading Card Game | American Obsessions
Wizards, demons and goblins collide in the world’s first trading card game Magic: The Gathering, affectionately dubbed “cardboard crack” by its 10+ million diehard obsessives. From dank, wood-paneled basements to international big money pro tournaments, Magic continues to flourish since its phenomenal debut in 1993.
VICE follows a professional Magic player who dropped out of college for a shot to be number one on the pro circuit, while two brothers wax nostalgic about the spells of old.

You haven't ever been truly entertained until you hear a beefy Italian guy use a boa constrictor's hunting behavior as an analogy for his Magic: The Gathering strategy.
yo, I love those guys now
"Picture a boa constrictah.." Those guys are legit. 😆
I physically CAN'T
@kih I think he's more of a stax player.
Lol! Those guys were classy, damn. Love it
I’ll never forget, my math teacher was friends with the creator of Magic the Gathering. And he told us about how he played the game with a small group of friends when it was still in development and he has some of the original stuff hung up in his class room.
Lmao bet he does
@@katielowenhe does, for sake of privacy i’ll keep his name for myself but i know exactly who OP was referencing.
Parents get your kids into Magic The Gathering. They won't have money left for drugs or alcohol
Kruppt808 wow so original hahaha you are so cool

@@cantthinkofaname3993 let people sound cool on the internet bro. Just leave him be, anyone willing to post a reply like that has to make themselves feel good in some way anyway they can
I've heard it before but still chuckled. You above act like you've never shared a joke before.
@@TheVoiceofKizzy no it just rubbed me the wrong way that this guy stole a joke.
The real tragedy is those cards at the beginning weren't sleeved
I know wtf, there was prolly a bag of cheetos there too.
I think that was a draft or pre release event. and not a constructed format
Lol
It may be criminal... But it is a really pure form of Magic
lol I'm honestly hoping they were using proxies, or else they had a real big budget to be playing with an un-sleeved ancestral recall and be treating it that rough lol (@7:27)
My god, that Italian family seriously hit me right in the feels zone. I've never played magic in my entire life, but the way they respect the game and make it a good time like that makes me wanna give it a whirl with some friends.
its alot of fun if you have a group of friends. I've made alot of them growing up playing Magic, even though "cooler" kids laughed at us, we didn't care because it was so much fun. I stopped playing because I moved but for all of my teenage and half of my adult life i played every week with a dozen or so long time friends.
Did you ever get into playing?
that is what magic really is. People using whatever and just having fun. Playing some games after dinner with a few drinks.
lol when i saw this comment before it happened in the video, i figured you were talking about an actual italian family. Those guys are americans, not italians.
Those cards in that box they have are thousands of bucks.
The Italian brothers make the game far more appealing than the professional players.
It's because to them, MtG is an experience, it's fun and a part of their childhood AND their adulthood. The pros do it for money and some of them don't see the fun in it
+Jw Slifer Uh there are far more lucrative and easy careers to get into, there is obviously a level of fun involved for them to keep doing it
myztikrice Look at their faces, do they look like they're having fun. When you feel physically ill from losing, is that fun? Maybe from just watching this 18 year old's experience, I'm put off by the tournament scene, but still, this guy doesn't project an aura of joy when he's playing
+Herman Melville i mostly stopped playing once things became too focused on having a tight deck with lots of duplicates of key cards to make killer combos when what i liked was, well, the artwork and the making of decks themed around the type of critter, a nice angelic focused white & green deck, or blue & black dragons and dead things. plus i bought a lot of my cards in europe so my decks tended to be in a mix of english, german, and french. despite what they say about not needing to speak the same language, your opponent often likes to read what the card does for themself and not just trust your explanation of what your Schrecken aus dem All has done [German Cosmic Horror]. but french and german cards were going for about half of what english cards were going for. and english cards in prague and budapest in the late 1990s were going for half of US price, so that's where the real binge-buying began.
+Jw Slifer some people find enjoyment in winning. they don't really experience what others would call "fun". it's kind of a time-waster when you could be comparing your abilities against others to demonstrate your dominance. while those who are interested in fun view competition more as the time-waster instead. too intense, too focused on winning and losing, when you could be enjoying the experience of playing instead. people have different types of emotions, and different levels of the emotions they have. there are people who don't have much of a "joy" section of their brain. those people also tend to have a very weak "relax" section of their brain as well. perfectally cromulent is phd psychologist as well as mtg player, so is trustworthy source of wisdom on individual differences with regard to emotional states. also is on the having fun with the nice cards side. too many fun goblin and orc cards out there to be too concerned with winning.
I taught my kids to play magic, and now we have big family games. My wife, the kids, and myself all against each other. It's a fantastic way for the family to bond and a way for all of us to have a common interest. I absolutely love this game.
THATS CURRENTLY WHAT IM TRYING TO DO AS A FATHER. JUST NOW GETTING INTO IT. SO INTERESSTING. TBH
Bless you both and have a lot of fun. Seems like you are great parents! :) Looking forward to it in the future.
The ending with those kids was worth the whole watch. Hearing them call each other noobs and scrubs LMFAO.
Magic is the shit. One of the guys in the Army showed me how to play, than after that it was 12 dudes playing everyday for 2 years. love this game
LOL we did that in the Marine Corps as well.
Did y’all bring your cards with you from home? I didn’t know you could bring you personal belongings. Or were you able to buy the cards/ order them while You were on base
Haha seems fun.
MTG tournaments at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan got serious, bro.

"No one's bigger than the game. The game has to be about community." Amen!

I watched this documentary for the first time 7 years ago and I always come back every few years. Gosh time flies but I’m so happy this is what got me into magic.
Just finding it for the first time.
Wow it was my gateway into magic too when the doc first got released. I always come back to watch it again also! Happy gaming!
Shoutout to the brothers for loving their family and playing Vintage which is easily the most fun way to play the game
The two kids playing at the end legitimately made me smile... I never played magic, and have no clue what the hell is going on but watching those two just warmed my heart... great watch!!!
7:52 "High-level vintage Magic, and great pasta." Sign me the f**** up!
Anyone else freaking out because you want to know what's in that kids binder?! The mystery is killing me....
What's in the binder!

Is it still killing you
maybe those racist cards that they had to retract?
@@muitosabao the card's weren't racist and never were. What he had was most likely Richard Garfields card regarding the birth of his child. There's alot of cards that only a few were made and some were leaked. They are priceless
This was almost too wholesome, the brothers just getting together to play cards with friends. That is the EXACT energy we need in the world. this was a great watch

You're showing your class. The Gaylord is an extremely well-known luxury resort, you wouldn't "chuckle" if you knew.
Space Jazz I find it absolutely hilarious, since I literally can't give less of a shit.
A word of advice: never EVER get caught up in the money aspect of the game. The experience of winning or losing does not get more fun with more expensive decks. These days there are plenty of resources for building cheap decks that are still competitive enough to have fun with. The reality is, unless you treat Magic like a full time job, you will probably never have a single meaningful result, so you might as well just try to have fun and not waste your money on expensive cards.
Amen, brother, That is why I never delved into the competitive side of magic or yugioh because i feel like most people treat these games as pay to win.
I buy 1000 card lots and do fine enough.
Just print them on card stock, lol
"The mind is a very fragile thing" Evidently not yours, mate. Yours seems to be made of a slab of concrete
Yeah, I got hard douche-chills from that clip. We know the mind is actually not a fragile thing at all. I feel sorry for people who are afraid of their own imagination and feel like it can lead them somewhere that could destroy their life.

His mullet was a very powerful thing though. Very powerful indeed.
"I just need land" lol oh the plight of playing MTG
This documentary got me into magic and iv been hooked for the last year. Thanks vice its the greatest game iv ever played ill continue to play.
Good to hear.
Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center = lovely name
As a long time magic player i hope you like it and you do well , key is to progress is to play in tournaments and fnm , and if you're looking to have fun get some friends to play it . If you've played it for a year you might already know this but a cube is a really nice way to mix things up while still playing magic .
Seymour Is this game addicting ?
BinAlladin Magic , is pretty addictive if you are willing to put some money in it .
The "Italian jock nerds" seem like they would be fun to play with. 😁
Magic is an excellent game of strategy, I was first exposed to it during my years in college and once I started playing it I couldn't stop playing it. My favorite creatures and deck themes were goblins (red theme deck) and zombies (black theme deck)
Using vintage cards without sleeves!!!?? Oh the shame
using any cards without sleeves is generally frowned upon
I mean they are Catholics ;)
Gaea's cradle and an old school sol ring without sleeves?! oh the humidity
Bins Wanger ;-; I seriously died when I saw NO SLEEVES ON THESE OLD CARDS.
i played for years with unsleeved ancestral recall and time twister
I wanna hang out it with the Italian, dude's. They seem like they've got casual playing down pat, and not to mention great player's.
+broshaman The ironic part about that is, if you take the top dozen cards the Italian dudes own, those cards are worth about the same as a medium sized house. If you take into account all of their cards, you can buy a sports card with it. So, 'casual' and 'vintage' in Magic are words that really don't go together.
If you're a collector like these guys are. It's very easy to say that.
+broshaman i mean, I wouldn't call them collectors per se, it's just they've been playing since the beginning of the game
+broshaman pucatrade.com/invite/gift/47630
I love just playing causally for fun even if I went to a big tournament I would not care if I lost as long as I had fun😊
This Italian-American family playing magic together warms my heart

The kids learning to play at the end of the documentary are awesome. I've played since I was nine years old, in 1993.
Same. My brother was 17 at the time.
I'm glad video games and card games are a lot more accepted these days among young adults and adults, ah what a time to be alive

+Feckling videogames for sure but everybody still makes fun of kids who play with trading cards
lovingchicken10 kids, maybe. Universities are full of people who like to get stoned and play mtg

Jacob Wilson stopped being active in MtG a few years ago, as of this writing. He was kept on Channel Fireball and participated in Team related competitions. It's looking like he probably shifted his attention back to University and has ultimately moved on to another phase in life. He did not win a Pro Tour.
Magic helped me gain a whole new group of awesome friends, like close friends. That’s not easy when you’re 40 plus but Magic was the way to it. It has had a very positive impact on my life.

Those kids at the end are the best. Just hanging out at a Pro Tour, someone hands them a well constructed deck. Of course they would be hooked.
Pre constructed deck
And now we know why......lotta child molesters in the crowd
You Mang You alright dude? Bad day?
I've played online a little bit. It was fun but so complicated to learn. More than a little difficult. Whoa I love that the family plays it together. That's so cool. Especially seeing older people playing the game with their kids. I'm jealous honestly.
I used to play to win and make infinite loop decks and 100% stopping power types, eventually it just gets boring and I started craving theme creature decks and I have 13 creature types finished so far and it’s a blast to play them now! Such a great and versatile game.
Tribal decks are fun.
My favourite part was at the end when the kids were playing. I can remember experiencing the magic for the first time when I was their age. Truly an amazing game where you can challenge yourself as well as make great friends!
That box of vintage cards is worth a fortune.
I was hoping they'd spend more time on the actual history of the game. It's really changed a lot over the years, and it's a pretty interesting world for the uninitiated. Also, WTF with the unsleeved cards at the beginning!?!
I think their trying to make it feel like a card game in the 90s
If this doesn't make sense im sorry
This actually got me playing MTG again. Thank you, Vice!
10:35 "How many know the mind is a very fragile thing?" Me because my mind exploded seeing the awesomeness of that permed mullet and goatee combo.
Hahaah Yes!
I like how that mox sapphire is just chillin' at 8:15, casual power 9
thats exactly what i thought!
Same... Lol just a $1000 card no big deal.
imagine what other goodies he has
Marcus Pulido and the dual land right next to it as well that box is worth more then my life right now
i mean they're vintage players and one of them has a beta lotus lol. unlimited power probably isnt that big of a deal to them.
The bit at the end with the youngsters was awesome 👏🏼
back in around 97 when i was 25 i got my first apartment with an old friend from highschool and another mutual friend, by that point we were sort of into different things. so i was going out clubbing and doing what i was doing and he got really into magic, every payday he use to go to a little local game shop and buy an entire sealed case of cards and then spend the whole evening just opening them and sorting them by rarity. so he just had stacks and stacks of the things, he probably had hundreds of the same common cards that he had no use for and no one else wanted them. and he actually never had anyone to play with but just kept collecting them. i didnt really pay attention and dont know a lot about it, i just remember that rare black lotus card he was always hoping to find. i cant say anything because i blew all my money in the 90s on old obscure records that had never made it to CD and on action figures. but i wonder sometimes if he still has all those cards in boxes under his bed where they have never served any sort of use. at least my toys got displayed and my records got played.
No sleeves? Sin.
+TomasGregovich Came to the comment section to say that. Take my like sir.
+TomasGregovich i was thinking the same thing when i saw moxes and duals without sleeves it hurts my soul and i wanted to cry :P
+TomasGregovich It was a throwback to the early 90's. Iirc, card sleeves didn't become mainstream until the late 90's.
www.etsy.com/ca/shop/summer9magic9edgar
+TomasGregovich I agree, but I also believe not everyone cares about the monetary value of some things. I know a guy that plays MTG without sleeves and still uses 3 of the power nine, he'll tell you he doesn't give rat's ass about how much they're worth. It's his cards, he never intends to sell or trade anyways.
that Italian food looked good af.
Everybody knows that blacks have great food.
The credit rolling scene with the two kids was the flashback, adorable in its own right,.. Nice video,..
I've always been a sports car fan and always admired the magic players at 40 years old I think I'm ready to start playing Magic I'm way more into that kind of stuff these days
Good video, I like two kids at the end just learning. I remember that feeling. I ran a game store for about 7 years and teaching someone Magic for the first time was fun as hell.
4:25 Gaylord resort? lmao
Calm down child
That also made me giggle a little bit. And i'm almost 22.
I simply didn't find the word gaylord to be remotely as funny as it seems to be to you. You want to honk the horn?
Lol
Gay-Lord, notice Vice edited that in right after they prayed at the dinner table.
This covered game play really well but even as a game play focused person, they needed a segment on secondary market value and how that changes the way Jacob, the vintage players and the day 1 kids are able to play.
I watched this like 5 tines by now. Its so well made, just like Mtg is. For me, it‘s really an inspiration to grow as a player.
8:16 I DON'T SEE A SLEEVE AROUND THAT MOX SAPPHIRE. WHY ISN'T THAT MOX SAPPHIRE IN A SLEEVE? *heavy breathing intensifies*
Antavalon 0:56 Volcanic Island... You can cry now.
Antavalon WHAT IS THIS, CASUAL GAMEPLAY?
Naryum Oh good lord I didn't even notice that I'll be in the corner listening to linkin park and eating a tub of tear-soaked ice cream if you need me
Naryum can u explain what that means
xJoeEdgex Sure. Basically some cards are worth a lot of money so people put them in plastic sleeves so they don't get damaged. The Volcanic Island at 0:56 is worth at 150$ and the fact that it isn't in a sleeve is surprising because cards gets damaged easily and they loose value that way.
Imagine one of them telling a girl they're going to the magic card tournament at the Gaylord centre, with a flask.
Hahahahaha DONT WORRY THEY WILL NEVER HAVE TO TELL A GIRL WHERE THEYRE GOING UNLESS ITS THEIR SISTER OR MUM
The way Jacob Wilson's boys have his back. You truly love to see it.
When they showed the two brothers’ collection, I almost died seing a mox Sapphire and og dual lands just chillin in the box no sleeves or nothing 😢😅
I wonder what was in the binder that man couldn't show vice. Probably a card that never got printed
Probably the cards that were printed for Richard Garfield's personal use. I heard it was used to propose to his then-girlfriend at the time. Some of the copies were stolen.
I'm not sure but I'm dying to know!
those are worth a ton!
It could also have been like an orica (where he had a card customized with unique artwork by paying an artist. Often involves risque or other "inappropriate" imagery)
Probably, it was nothing, but just sounded more "secret" and amazing.
I feel so bad for those kids at the end... They'll never have any money ever again.
atleast the money isnt going to drugs
shit if the money went to drugs, that would be better. nothing wrong with drugs, you die anyway. only do-gooders stay 100 % clean , like sheep.
You have a small, narrow world-view
I can resell drugs faster
Teach your kids to play MTG, and they won't have enough money for drugs and alcohol.
Love the opening credits with "American Obsessions" in all the different classic logo treatments!
who else has a box with thousands of dollars worth of cards, but has no idea where the hell they are?
looks like only you pal.
@James Brincefield I've never really seen YuGiOh cards holding any value compared to other similar games
Me too. I've been looking for it for two years now
I know exactly where they are
@@wild3gaming398 Some earlier cards like TP2 Morphing Jar are worth insane amounts, but they're the exceptions.
What I love about these circles/kinds of people is that everybody seems welcome; they don't judge on the premise of how "cool" you are or look. Commands respect.
I got into playing Magic: The Gathering because of my friends at a camp. I bought a deck and it was really fun to play. Unfortunately I dont go to that camp anymore and nobody in my area plays Magic so I haven't played in a while...
The way the guy from long island described the way he plays his magic deck was the most intense thing lmao.
"pitcha a boa constrictuh"
lmao
😂😂😂
lmfao
Ah geeze look at dis guy ova heah
Fuhgetta about it!!
I think the great part of the game is no matter what walk of life you've had, there are so many different types of people that play it. I joined the military thinking no one would be into it, only to find an amazing community. Now I'm home, in a completely different place in life. I still find new people to play with. Amazing game.
For real great video, Jacob keep going, I'm going to start magic myself.
My fourth grade teacher got me into magic... went through my cards the other day and damn!! Brought back some good times, and memories, but I checked the prices and they really are like an investment. Makes me seriously wish I would have kept my Pokemon cards but I didn't know any better at the time.
Wow this brings back memories from ages ago. I totally forgot at one point I spent entire weekends at card shops (can't believe they're still around!) I grew up in a tiny town, and I remember spending entire weekends at the card shop with my younger brother talking to the employee (there would be just 1 unless there was a tournament) and playing trading card games while my mother went shopping at the mall. It was probably the only card shop for miles and it was a very small suburban area so it was just kids hanging out like us. We moved to a city and we did the same thing but it really was the wild west back in the day and the fun just wasn't there because this was a really serious hangout spot where maybe 50% of the folks were adults and were spending a lot of money on their decks and it was all about winning and not meeting people or hanging out. And then there were the cheating controversies and fake cards and stolen cards and just general intimidation tactics we faced because my brother and I were probably the 2 youngest players there. We just didn't fit the demographic and literally no one ever talked to us even though we were fairly regular players in the weekly tournaments (and we'd hang out hours after they ended because our mother would still be out). This is probably one of those areas that social media and camera phones documenting games helps provide transparency. I remember playing an opponent who had her cards in the thick plastic that could barely be shuffled and her dad 'cutting' her deck so desired cards would he drawn. There was no regulation at all. And anytime you had a complaint you needed to be good buddies with the organizers to be heard or have definite proof (often that'd have to be spectators who'd have to be your buddies to back you up). And god knows the trouble you had if you were half the age of the accused. I'm surprised tournaments are still around! But I guess things have improved, so I'm happy that kids don't have to deal with as much of the headache as we did back in the day.
Those two kids at the end. They are legend.
The kid at the end says it best: "I didn't know anything about Magic until today except for that it was a card game, and now I'm obsessed with it."
Never played this myself, but always though this game looked like loads of fun to play. Over here in the UK you usually have to travel a bit to find someone to play against
what the fuck is the guy in 17:35 hiding?
+iDerekMC Keeping a photo of his weener in his Magic card collection should come back to haunt him sooner or later, only matter of time.
+iDerekMC stolen cards that might get recognised ?
+b44rt Stolen or maybe some of the cards with boobs on them that he's embarrassed of lol.
Cards that should not have been in circulation, cards used for internal testing and development, presumably something like that
+iDerekMC My guess is an Alpha Black Lotus misprint. Which would probably be worth a cool million.
These vintage playing guys are charming. Love the way they play the game.
Magic the Gathering will continue to flourish as long as the heart of the cards reside in our deck and our drive to catch'em all.
Lmao
@@ryanoconnor5176how so ?
Those Italian dudes are the shit! So much passion in what they do. You can tell they love it all.
This is my new favorite Vice video.
I've always been more of a casual magic player. I never really bothered ordering a bunch of cards just to make a powerful (and expensive) deck. Instead I enjoyed finding the potential in cards I randomly pulled and throwing them together into a Frankenstein like deck. Of course they were pretty bad but I never really cared about winning, that wasn't what the game was about to me. To me it was about taking up a whole table in the school cafeteria to play while we ate pizza we got from across the street. To me it was about having a couple friends over so we could trade to improve our decks and get a couple games in on the kitchen table. To me it was always about the experience of the game, not the outcome. I've unfortunately moved away from the game recently but deep down I know there is still a passion for it waiting to be rekindled. Hopefully I will be give the chance to do so.
:)

the italian brothers seem to enjoy it way more, it just seems way more enjoyable when played casually rather than playing it seriously, that dude is beating him self up over loses.
I remember money drafting Kibler day 2 of GP Columbus years ago, he was to my right and said "don't make the right pick", so I took the best card in the pack, Cerulean broker, only to cut on blue and lose the draft. Great memories
I literally put myself through college by buying and selling MTG cards. The secondary market is huge.

Holy smokes! i grew up playing magic. This video is very nostalgic. I'm from Long Island as well. Thought it was cool that these Italian bros were representing. But then at 14:59 I see the god damn dunkin' donuts I used to work at!?? No way!!
I started playing with housemates during the Fallen Empires expansion, altho some of them had gotten hands on beta test cards at local Seattle sci-fi/fantasy conventions. Then I discovered that a former co-worker's illustrations were in the production sets. Not sure how WotC compensated their artists, but at the time a lot of artists were putting bread on the table by illustrating cards for CCG's.
makes me feel old knowing i bought those revised cards they used in the video and know them by heart. has it really been over 20 years? wow
almost 30 years very soon..
Players that dont talk during the match suck the fun out of the game for me. I'm not a fan of the dude they chose to follow around for this documentary, just puts me off. Fantastic doc though.
i mean some people have cant socialize
I mean chatting with your friend while playing is different than this kid not talking during pro matches.
@@deathtones21 and some people "have cant" type either
if it was for big money...i wouldnt talk either...it would put me off.
Unless you qualify for top 8(even then you can get warnings for slow play)your rounds are timed for 50 minutes and chatting can eat up that time like nobody's business.
I remember being a kid with 8-10 when Magic was released . Since then I dreamt about learning how to play and collecting cards while observing the older kids from the block buying packs and playing together. There was indeed something magical about it with the beautiful and yet haunting aspect of the card's art. I didn't have the budget to buy the cards, as they are a bit expensive here in Brazil, and I had other plans (candies) with the pocket money my parents gave me. The game was also extremely complex for my age lol. Now that I've been playing online a lot and started to build my first deck with physical cards, is very rewarding and a dream accomplished. The smell of the cards just after ripping the pack remains the same
by far one of vices best videos this makes me happy
"This is the backbone of the deck. It is called Mishra's workshop" Oh, you're one of THOSE people.
and you are one of THOSE people who POINT OUT those people
