Vice takes an unprecedented look into the shadowy industry of Private Military Companies. For the past two decades these private companies, like Black Water, Aegis and G4S have silently consumed military operations around the world, doing everything from back end logistics, protection of government VIP's and diplomats to actual combat duties. In this documentary we explore the origins of this industry, their rise in the war on terror and their future operations around the world.

    • The east India company never had a powerful army or navy they utilised the government e.g. Royal Navy and British Army. To be the major offensive force. So it's the opposite and the way Amazon runs it's self, in which it constantly asks for hand outs, I can imagine they'd also force the US government to give them most of their security.

      @Alex-cw3rz@Alex-cw3rz3 жыл бұрын
  • I've worked for PMC's all over the world for almost a decade. The advantage to the US government is that they never have to report on PMC deaths. It almost never makes the news. It also gives the US plausible deniability and the ability to distance itself. Invariably, militaries in a protracted conflict break the rules. You can't live in a war for years and not. When a Soldier or Marine does something like desecrate a corpse or shoot civilians, the nation as a whole gets a big black eye. When it's a PMC, the government can basically hang that one contractor or that one company out to dry. The reality is, that company reforms under a new name and business goes on as normal. It also depends heavily on the company. Overall, I found that most companies contracting to the US government are fairly above board and at least have standards and codes of conduct. In Africa and South America, I found it to be a bit more of a free for all, though once again very dependent on the organization. I tell my buddies that are considering the PMC world after the military to be very careful and stick with US government contracting. It's a lot more above board and more like the name "High Risk Security". Outside of the US Government Contracts, you find jobs that start to flirt a lot more with being straight mercenary work.

Now I work for a different defense contractor with a whole different mission. Honestly I really liked working there and I do think the media likes to be extremely hyperbolic when writing articles or making documentaries about BW. Most of what I've read or watched being reported about BW have been blown way out of proportion. They always made it look as if we're a private army fighting a war on our own rules which was complete BS. We were never allowed to perform offensive tactics except self defense. Meaning we couldn't go searching for 'bad guys'. We just provided security for people and the only time we could use force is if we were under attack. And that's only if the military wasn't there at the time. I get a good chuckle out of the nonsense I see on the internet.

  • It's not bending the rules, it's survival. Obviously going on full scale offensive operations is a no-go, but eliminating a threat, that is actively engaged with you in combat, is defensive. For example, if the guy that just shot an rpg at our convoy ducks out of sight, that does not mean he is no longer a threat. We assume that he is either preparing another warhead, or grabbing another weapon, which opens up to the possibility of having to engage in offensive techniques to eliminate the threat. This is especially applicable to having vehicles stuck in a kill zone. Rather than just sit there and die, we actively seek out the combatants, and eliminate the threat. It's this way of thinking, and operating, that ensures we all make it back alive.

The fact is, they have no other attraction or reason for keeping the field than a trifle of stipend, which is not sufficient to make them willing to die for you. They are ready enough to be your soldiers whilst you do not make war, but if war comes they take themselves off or run from the foe; which I should have little trouble to prove, for the ruin of Italy has been caused by nothing else than by resting all her hopes for many years on mercenaries, and although they formerly made some display and appeared valiant amongst themselves, yet when the foreigners came they showed what they were. Do you mean ankle holsters? Possibly you're talking about deep concealment holsters, minimalistic holsters, pocket holsters, or holsters for purses or bras. Which holster, exactly, do you mean Rick? Which brands do you recommend? Which ones have worked the best for you (personally, I prefer the Tier 1 Concealed holster)? • PMCs won't "takeover" for one simple reason. War is expensive. The US government alone is saddled with trillions in debt just from the wars of the least ten years. No PMC could maintain that kind of spending because, unlike the government, they actually have to worry about making a profit. The only reason why the US has gotten away with it for as long as it has is because it has access to a printing press. Even so, that won't last forever. The money will become worthless and the whole system will cave in.

    @sniper6081@sniper60819 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly. PMCs don't have the power or resources to take over and maintain that power. PMCs and other revolutionary organizations focused on attaining power eventually evolve into the governments we have today anyway. PMCs are like monarchies. Both monarchies and governments share in common their lust for power, but the former is premature, aristocratic, and violent, while the latter is mature, democratic, and more ethical (despite what people say about the lack of ethics in politics and government in modern U.S. times, what we have today is a helluva lot better than the monarchies that existed in the past). It's the natural evolution of society for less powerful groups to attain more and more power until it eventually becomes a government. Another way to look at governments is to think of them as highly evolved and structured PMCs. Therefore, to suggest that a PMC can jump the societal evolution timeline and immediately become more powerful and resourceful than a government is simply absurd. The system will cave in, but in order to survive, the U.S. must decentralize and evolve into a society that is less focused on war, bureaucracy, and politics. We will either evolve into a more prosperous and peaceful society, or we will fall back in the evolutionary cycle and become a more primitive, fraudulent, and violent society than what exists today. Who knows what the future holds. In the long run, everything will be alright, but in the short run, things may get ugly.

    • ***** The scariest thing to me about it is, say a corporation owns a lot of oil reserves in a foreign nation, and that nation decides to nationalize the oil industry, the corporation could potentially use a PMC to overthrow that government and back a more neoliberal regime, while silencing dissent. Governments have done this frequently, but they are held accountable, especially democratic ones, and as the case in Portugal, people will even overthrow their government based on wars in other nations, but corporations aren't accountable like governments are (to an extent), and corporation can't just be overthrown so easily, nor are the vast majority democratic in the slightest bit.
