For a brief moment in the early 2000’s, people were referring to M Night Shyamalan as “The Next Spielberg.” With popular hits like The Sixth Sense and Signs, it seemed like the director was going to churn out classic after classic. But then came The Village… Lady in the Water… The Happening… Opinions started to change. Then came “The Last Airbender” in 2010, which not only solidified the new, negative public opinion of Shyamalan, but also enraged fans of the animated series around the world.
The Last Airbender definitely raises a lot of questions. Like why rush through twenty episodes in ninety minutes? Why is there so much narration and exposition? Why are everybody’s names being pronounced weird? Why doesn’t anyone have any personality? Why does bending look so weird? What was up with that Earth Tribe scene? Who thought this was a good idea?!
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to The Last Airbender! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

    • Honestly, I'd have gone with "I don't know why this movie should be." The series is damn near perfect -- I don't say that lightly -- there's not really much you can do in a movie to top it even if you do everything well. So why make the movie at all? (I mean, sure, want to do a spin-off, tell a different story from that universe, or something like that? Great! But "the same, but compressed and live-action", while now a Disney staple (at least the latter part of it) doesn't really justify making a movie.

      @bobbyfeet2240@bobbyfeet22403 жыл бұрын
    • I choose to believe that this movie is the perfect live action replication of the play in the series, has some tangentially connected lines but otherwise has vastly different characters, is incorrect in areas, and uses wonky special effects to show bending stuff happening in lame theater style.

      @calvinrosehart7042@calvinrosehart70423 жыл бұрын
    • I love how Shyamalan's excuse for how short and truncated the plot was is: "I'm just comfortable with that runtime length."

      @ScionStorm1@ScionStorm13 жыл бұрын
    • @@bobbyfeet2240 I agree that no one should have tried to make a live-action version of the show in the first place. That's something I bring up a lot when discussing this movie, making it live-action and trying to sum it all up in a movie (no matter the length) were the first problems. Even someone who really knows what they are doing in terms of making a fantasy epic probably could not make this incredibly movie well. The visuals, the story, and the characters are all very rooted in the fact that the show is a cartoon. Everything is built around that, and becomes larger than life and more humorous. Maybe that's why the movie was trying to be more serious than the TV show? Either way, the seriousness of the movie did feel very strange. It goes hand-in-hand with the cartoon thing. The characters are meant to be far more comedic, even when the story is serious. The TV show puts seriousness and comedy together. So when they only tried to be serious in the film, everything that was so precariously balanced on how it was done in the TV show fell apart.

Plus it's a name so the "correct" pronunciation is whatever the one naming decides on. A parent could name their child "Jah-coob" instead of the normal Jacob and that would be the correct pronunciation for that person. So I still think the movie either got it wrong, or changed his name depending on how you look at it.
