  • Jin is fondly known as "Triple High Note" because of his three note live belting to a G5, without even going into breathy falsetto, in Crystal Snow. In Permission To Dance he does an amazing 10 note run in 2 seconds in the background. According to the articles I've read Jin has a really powerful voice, V has the widest range in the group, Jimin has the highest *type* of voice and Jungkook is just a master of ALL trades aka "The Golden Maknae". • That line about “I’m still thirsty” by Suga also ties into to his constant battle with his greed/ambition Suga often talks about his endless ambition to acquire more success (and how sometimes his greed for success actually frightens him). So in that section where he is boasting about BTS selling out stadiums and how they only have themselves to compete with for future achievements, he’s also acknowledging that he wants more. Which is interesting bc he’s spoken in interviews and songs he’s put out after Dionysus about how he was actually terrified by BTS’ sudden success in the West (and worldwide) bc he had never planned for it. He began to battle with the fear of the unknown and the fear of falling from such incredible heights… In conclusion, I love Yoongi’s lyricism 😂😂 and his unending commitment to being as raw and honest in his lyrics as possible

    • You‘re spreading misinformation, your take on “Jin didn’t know how to sing and dance“ isn’t even true. Jin was able to sing, he had no professional musical background like the REST of bts didn’t have. Do you also know that the vocal teacher that worked early one with the entire vocal said that Jin rather than improved transformed his voice and that he had to work mainly on a melodic vocalizatzon of words that is so opposite to acting. SHE ALSO CALLED HIM HER BEST STUDENT !!! Just because he didn’t intend to sing doesn’t mean he couldn’t. He even made it through an audition after he was scouted by s&m when he was 15. Stop mindlessly spreading the normalized narratives you hear and fact check before. And he’s not underrated at all, you just don‘t focus on him or pay enough attention. :)

It just annoying how repetitive these statements have become and the need to bring them up without actually going into detail. Saying this “remember man couldn’t sing and dance“ just isn’t true. A very to little experience (he did. theater once) doesn’t equal singing zero to little singing talent. Even suga in 2018 festa said Jin was actually always good. Too many people in this fandom have collectively agreed on that Jin has improved so much (because that’s what they Heard- a lot) without actually taking the time to really check him out. There’s even a performance from 2013 “you‘re my“ that potrays his early singing capabilities. We shouldn’t run with the narrative “he couldn’t sing“. It’s honestly annoying. I didn’t mean to hate on you at all. And I wouldn’t have even assumed he grabbed your attention bc of his looks first…..his singing is very much appreciated. Actually, all of the members may sounds like they have a high voice when they're singing and rapping but their real talking voice are pretty deep. Even Jimin who is known with his high singing voice is actually has pretty deep talking voice sometimes. The high part is also Jin. But as you can see, he's singing the chorus part during the screaming part so they just use the backing track for it. This performance is really intense but it's nothing to compare to their performance at MMA 2019. They performed Persona, Boy In Luv, Boy With Luv, Mikrokosmos and Dionysus. • My mans Jin with the crazy high note! He said he thinks their producer (who managed the recording sessions) loves to push him to his limits and that slide took a long time to record and he’s not sure he could ever do it live. But boy does it sound amazing in the mix!!! I agree it’s so interesting how they mixed the parts on this track! It’s actually really common in Kpop to chop the parts that way, to have different singers alternative singing the sales lines of a chorus. They do this so everyone can shine, but you’ll find it’s also more common in uptempo songs. They chop the parts so short purposely to make it easier to sing while performing intense choreo. Smaller parts mean more air. If you run out of air too much not only will the vocals suffer but the performance can look tired and sloppy. You’ll also notice the rappers usually have longer parts when the do the verses and rapping also needs a lot of breath control so after the choreo differs for rappers in that they mainly stay still or dance upright in the same place while others dance around them. It gives them support while still making the stage look big and interesting I just find Kpop so fascinating because it is such a PERFORMANCE driven style of music. So much so it literally affects how songs are written. Especially when it comes to title tracks. They have to write title tracks with choreo in mind. Maybe that’s also why BTS B-sides are so good and worth checking out. As experimental as they are their title tracks are still going to be somewhat formulaic. They really have room to play with genre and format and even different combinations of members on b-sides

  • They use mitology, but also a lot popkulture references, fables, history, art, a lot of writers/thinkers, books, movies, etc. Icarus is used a least two times. There is a lot of references in their music like Jung, Nietzsche, Murakami, Chopin, also books like "Damian" by Hermann Hesse all of book is used in Blood, Sweat and tears. ETC. By all that you can see that they really have a lot of knowlage and read a lot and are interested in world, culture, people. Dionysus is great metaphor for art, drinking in it like alkohol. Great song, concerts opened with this song, that was wow, really great energy.

I'm sooo glad you were able to look at the lyrics prior, then dive into the song and how it's mixes with the music (you can often find parallels), and then did the live performance! Brilliant! It adds to the whole experience and feel of the song. BTS just LOVES to add in small details (whether it'll be small unconcious nodds lyrically or musically like "the drunk way" of rapping/doing hip hop or whether it's in the music video with camera angles, lighting, clothing etc.). The rule of thumb with BTS is that everything has a purpose, and you'll only discover more connections the more you listen and the more you've experienced their content and music (they like to link everything and throw in a ton of eastereggs). So cool.

  • Yes, they are very literary minded. J-hope especially sprinkles in literary characters and titles throughout his lyrics - he has a firm grounding in the classics due to his father who is a literature teacher. But BTS can fashion a whole albums concept with themes drawn from one book as they did with wings, or create a connected series of albums based off of a book fashioned from the lectures of an American professor created as a primer of the theories of the founding father of analytical psychology as they did with the map of the soul series. And yes, that is really a true thing. That happened. Their music videos reference literature and folk tales and history and classical paintings and modern art installations and movies and the list goes on… These guys are just really ready to take inspiration from and make connections to the art and thoughts of others, and they have never underestimated their fans always expecting that they would find sources and make the connections and I do believe they suspect ARMY to be the most intellectual fan base in the world(and who knows? by this point they might well be). They have spurred the rise of book sales and fostered an audience who is almost thirsty for a good bit of indépendant study to really understand the underpinnings of things.

  • Also to answer your question at the end, BTS takes inspiration from a ton of different sources, including mythology! They've done whole albums based off of Carl Jung's psychological theories, Demian by Herman Hess, Ursula K Leguin's the Ones Who Walk Away From Omela's and more! Namjoon (RM) is the one that does a lot of their lyric writing and he reads *a ton* and as such is interested in a lot of the psychological and moral conundrums posed by these works. He usually manages to find a way to work it into their lyrics somehow! (And I'm so happy to see your wife back again! She truly has such a positive personality that's almost infectious through the screen and as an English major (and English lit nerd), it makes me so happy anytime fellow English literature nerds find joy in BTS' work! • I love that you took the time to read the lyrics first. Personally, I think that's a good way of doing it to get a feel for what the song is really about first. Especially when watching the music videos for the first time, as there's a LOT of visuals and that sometimes makes it hard to concentrate on what the lyrics are saying. And I consider the lyrics to be some of the most beautiful parts of BTS songs. And I think a lot of reactors (not all, but a lot of them) miss too much when they try and react to both visuals and lyrics at the same time. And I love that you watched a live performance as well. 1. Get to know the lyrics and the message, 2. Hear how the lyrics sound within the song itself/MV visuals, 3. Experience how they perform the song when in front of a live audience. I think you definitely got a well-rounded experience with this song. I really like watching both of your reactions. The lyrical insights as well as the musical ones. One of my favorite parts about BTS songs is they can be interpreted in so many ways. So don't ever worry about "interpreting it wrong", because I don't think you can. Everyone thinks and processes lyrics and music in different ways because we are all unique and have unique experiences and knowledge. So you interpreting it one way and throwing out whatever thoughts/vibes you get, may be something I've never thought of before. I remember in one of RM's early logs, he said something to the effect of that rather than making songs that you understand right away, he wanted to make music that gets better every time you listen to it. So any new interpretations I find just help me appreciate the songs more and more. I really love your reactions and can't wait for more! 💜💜💜

  • At 21.58 the high note you hear is actually Jin screaming. I came across a video where he said that Pdogg asked Jin to scream as he prefers at the point of the song. Hence, the high note we hear 😊💜

  • when it comes to bts, all of the music inspired by something pre-existing is this well done when it comes to references, metaphors, and everything else lyrically. if she was surprised by how good dionysus was at that, i can't wait for you both to dig into more bts :)

  • Oh my, what a great and cute reaction. You guys are so adorable! 😍 I love how you delved into the song and its meaning. This idea was a masterful one and the execution was top-notch. As folks have said it was a great live performance, it was the opening song for their last tour and the choreographer was a 19-year-old woman out of LA from the dance troupe The Lab named Sienna Lalau. 👍🏾

    • @@AndrewBergSax the push up choreo part was really dangerous they got injured so much in practice Army protested. BTS changed the choreo because Army was so worried for them!

  • When you do get to 2019 MMA performance, please pay attention to the very end where you can feel their heart beat out of this world. I fell in love with BTS after watching the very performance but my heart aches every time I watch it because they endured so much for that performance. I don't know how they withstood all that heat and sound while singing and dancing with such energy. A behind the scene clip showed Jimin collapse when he tried to get up from the chair. To say that I appreciate BTS's existence is an understatement. They are truly amazing. You and I began this journey around the same time. I am at Run BTS phase at the moment and I love their different personalities. I hope you continue your journey and learn more about Korean music and culture.

  • I remember Bang Chan (Stray Kids) when they did a cover performance of this track, he said that it was a lot of pressure to do justice to this song and even said that it was kinda difficult coz of the numerous adlibs but yes! SKZ did a great job.

  • Thank you Andrew, we got twinkle twinkle after all hahah! Please never apologize for the musical theory breaks, I’d happily have 3 minutes if not 30. Your passion for music really comes through in your explanations and it makes it such a delight and I want to hear more!! Caitlin, it was so satisfying to hear your take on the wine/arts drunk just from your lyrics read through because I feel like it would be so easy to take this song at face value and I adore the depth and significance of the mythological elements in the song. It’s one of those that was ten times cooler once I realised what they were doing in that way! You have the most wonderfully creative mind to appreciate BTS lyrics and I can’t wait to get your perspective on many more should you want to ☺️ My first reaction when Caitlin predicted it being intense was just ‘yuuup, and wait until the performance’ because they don’t do anything by halves and there’s always that vision.. I feel like it’s really quite clever because everything from the staging and the outfits to the choreography is such a production that after I watched my first Dionysus performance, I can’t help but have that picture of it all when I hear the song and it just fits. To summarize my long ramble (sorry!) Dionysus is a bop and thank you for another great video - the music and literary lover in me can’t get enough of the two of you, it’s the perfect world! 😄

I really enjoyed your knowledge of Music, the Arts, and philosophy and how all the these disciplines complement one another, which is also the basis of BTS' powerful and moving lyrics.
