We've built the engine, and we've put it in the boat. After our little spin on the lake, the next thing to do is watch Gord and Chris put it through its paces in a real race.
The only other turbine boat that showed up for this event had a mechanical problem, so it was us against a field of V-8 powered jet boats.
Enjoy the sights and the sounds !
If you like this, watch some much better onboard footage from our racing in New Zealand. A really good one is "My Kiwi Adventure Pt. 7: Racing the Dart River"
THIS IS THE BEST CHANNEL ON KZhead
Thanks. Many millions disagree...
3rd best :p
I will say that it definitely does not suck.
“They sound great, but you can’t argue with horsepower” - best quote
This is seriously one of the coolest videos on tube. I’ve watched it countless times. Amazing. I want one
There is a severe amount of awesome in this one!
The awesome power of a turbine. I had to laugh out loud when the driver opened it up at the race start and the piston boats, while they had been in front for a few seconds, the whistle of the turbine overtook any and all challengers. Thanks - great vids
That's why they call it UNLIMITED CLASS, Run what ya brung and hope ya brung enough!!! lol
A couple of things: 1: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR NO MUSIC!!!!!! ...I loved listing to the boats as they did their laps, and the T58 when it comes on song is pure grin inducing. 2: To those calling it unfair...sure their is a big difference in terms of their engines, but like car racing of the Group B rally days or V8 Supercars in Australia in the 1990's....you dont get faster and betters being Number 1 every time...its more fun to chase something down and innovate. 3: Dont stop being awesome....loved it.
After surfing the comment section, you Sir, are a gentleman. Witnessing that boat run proves you are a scholar.
Thanks for the kind words. I had never been to NZ before, and I found it to be very much to my liking!
I used to fly LCACs in the Navy, that boat is very impressive. Brings back fond memories of extreme speeds over water.
Still one of the sickest videos on youtube. I've watched this like 15 times now and has never gotten old.
No comparison to pistons
I love how you rolled around like to show off then dusted them all. Great build! Kudos!
Flipping awesome. I remember when I was a little kid all the big hydrofoils used huge piston aircraft engines, then the United Van Lines and Miss Budweiser showed up with their turbines and that was all she wrote. And so quiet.
Nice build. Worked with TF34, T56, TF100, and P&W R2800 (radial) power plants myself. At least in the aviation field. I hope the #2 bearing was tight, spinning them like that can foul up a lab seal quick. Love the boat and the turbine sounds really happy. The finish reminds me of the Indiana Gov.'s cup a few years back when I saw Miss Bud vying with Miss Madison. Unfortunately for Bernie, Miss Madison was in the lead. Some of my most cherished clips. Audio sucked on them because some rotary death trap was hovering directly overhead. I was really proud for Madison In. when their boat finally won against big money sponsorship. To my knowledge the only Unlimited owned by a city.
sh*t man!...makes a little power haha...blew passed the competition like they were standing still... that being said, it's not as simple as dropping a turbine in your boat ... set up to handle that extra speed and horsepower, along with a knowledgeable crew makes it look easy...congrats.
I never tire watching this. The accelleration must be incredible!
OMG, that was every superlative I can think of. Totally outgunned the opposition and all class. That was a truly beautiful drive in a very spectacular machine. A little shaky?, nah that's horsepower trying not to be tamed. Nice engine JayZ, looks like to be competitive they all need to visit Jet City?
Seeing "JET CITY TURBINES" blazed on the side gave me a big 'ole grin 😁
I can't help laughing like a madman every time I watch this. SPEED!
Nothing like the sound of a screaming V8, but--HOLY CRAP !!!!! I'm impressed.
…we FINALLY see the end result of your work! Most engines you build go in a can and disappear! This is OUTSTANDING!
Well it is the one that we've been following all through this series. Go back in time, and we get a good look inside it.
I must say, I really REALLY enjoyed that! What fun and you guys did a great job! I am a pilot and flight instructor (watching your videos primarily for educational purposes) but I love to show my friends in the aviation industry what happens when a turbine meets the marine world...wow! Well done!
Your guys were so far ahead they could have got out the paddles and paddled to victory. Very impressive, I love innovation like this. Good work sir.
I love the fact the start up is so predictable that your driver is happy to float with the current for a bit while spooling up..... and also the shots of the piston boats being left in a roosters tail! Awesome Stuff!
I'm seriously envious of all the fun you have with turbine engines. Lucky B*stard.
Oh...My...God... !!! This is absolutely amazing !
I can NOT get over how fast that is traveling. And what a view! Watching objects disappear in a fraction of a second as it flies by. My hat is off to the drivers/pilots. Oh, and of course the sound of that turbine is sweet. Thanks, Agent J Zed, truly a remarkable boat or as "Quint" would say, "vessel".
"If you're gonna do something, you might as well go big". Well done boys,be safe and please keep the excellent sound capture's coming.
Best jet boat video I've seen. That view off the back of the boat is just cataclysmic.
Thanks for showing us. 120-130 mph on a river is amazing but fun only (although I am a piston guy). I didn't see a turbine on a boat ever and couldn't get the grin off my face for at least 15 minutes :-) New subscriber here, also for the technical vids. Much appreciated. Regards from Germany
A T58-16 with its 2 stage Power Turbine would give you a 500+ horsepower boost! I really enjoy your videos. Thank you, please keep them coming.
Everybody knows that, and wants one. Hard to find.
May God Bless and guide theme home safely, Bless their Families, their Boat and their inspiration. Thanks for your teachings Ole Master Turbine Yoda. Let's have fun bring them all home safe at the end of the day and your teachings have opened my eye's. Thanks again, GB
Love the turbine on the river racing boat! Great job on the build AgentJayZ!
I remember when I was 15 living on Okanagan lake in Vernon, B.C. there was this guy who lived down the road who had a 40' Catamaran with a done up 502BBC. The next year he had a 50' Catamaran with an engine out of a helicopter. The sound I heard every weekend at 5am when the lake was like glass was priceless. He had 2 trolling motors to pull the boat back from the launch as he let the turbine fire & warm up. When he'd leave it would stand at about 20° and once it trimmed down left a wake/rooster tail the likes I've only seen at Thunderfest. What you have there is absolutely nuts and I absolutely love it!
8:00 at first I don't see the other boats, then their rooster tails appear and then fade into the distance. WOW this thing is a beast! Imagine a nice calm day fishing and then this monster roars past...that's how UFO stories begin!
Unlimited class of jetboat river racing. I'm just the engine guy, and I'm still learning about the sport.
That was GREAT ..... thanks for posting ....keep up the good work
This is awesome, I worked on T-58 engines in the Marine Corps, glad to see they are being used for racing.
You should watch the whole series, and tell me all the things I do wrong. Always good to hear from people with experience on these military engines.
The sound of that beast is incredible! Give him a few more laps and he will lap them all!
Wow 143 mph is very very impressive! Thank you for your response!
All I can say is ,,,,DAYUM!!! They were haulin ass!! That's pretty amazing!
Lots of people posting their “brroooo boooosssttttttt turrrbbboooo speeeed” boats... nothing compares to this. You have dominated everyone.
Thanks for sharing a great video! Worth watching. Thank you! 👍
Jay Z awesome boat sir. iv never seen a jet boat perform like this. Awesome job.
Can't argue with horsepower indeed. That was incredible.
Was watching the Allison rebuild and found this also. Very cool!
I have seen smoke puffs from big engines on test stands. Here I thought it was water spray mixing with hot exhaust gases. No problems were encountered.
v8 scream and scream but not move, that's why i love turbine engines, they whistle and runs fast as hell (way better sound, much more tech and give more feeling of power)
Yep, I think you nailed that race.
That was a pretty astounding performance margin! I'll bet the piston boats were pretty depressed when they found out what they were up against.
Oddly enough I would really enjoy cleaning and balancing blades all day for a living. As long as the tunes on the radio rocked!
Absolutely amazing !
You put me on the floor with " things are heating up! "
I love the small of jet 'A' in the morning
Vibrations - this is a great topic. Great Job!!!!!!
Nothing beats the sound of a v-8
a new fan nice job super fast i really liked it keep up the good work .
What else to go fishing? You guys are crazy, I love it!
That thing is such plain gettin it!! Nice work man!!
Wow this is the coolest jet boat ever!!!
The Gnome is essentially the same engine. The T-58 is a license-built copy of the RR Gnome. The fuel control of the Gnome is more problematic in trying to adapt it to a home built race boat. The engine featured in the series is a T58 -8F. Yes, the -16 is much sought after, and hard to find. Since the water jet drive system used in these boats was originally designed for about 500Hp, I think the jump from 1250 to 1800 Hp will result mainly in more broken parts...
Thanks for the upload, Jay. This is really good material.
The Sikorsky S-61 I fly has two of these GE CT58-140's. Great vid!
Holy cow, everybody is going to want one!
Wow. That is really something. I meet up with the owner of a steam museum just south of Palmerston North in New Zealand a few years ago. Talked about the steam turbine/generator used in the Golden bay cement works in Takaka that he now has. He said they used to spool up the turbine with minimal steam quickly, The energy used in getting there was small, 2 or 3 percent. But once synced with the grid they could open up full throttle right away. The efficiency of the turbines stood out when you looked at the mass of the rotating weight.
What amazes me, is that the boat stays so controllable. Them drivers sure have skill with 1250 at their disposal.
Very nice boat! For those that think a turbo diesel might give it a run for the money they don't realize how much power a turbine makes per pound of engine weight which makes it a perfect boat powerplant. 1250hp from an engine that might not weight much more than just the turbos on a diesel. No recip will ever come close to turbine power.
A jet jet boat. What a beast. Love it!
Holy crap that's a beast! The poor piston guys lol
They're too much competition even for the Allisons and Merlins from world war 2 fighter aircraft. But they put up a fight. That reminds me, I want to rewatch the President's Cup when Oh Boy! Oberto beat Miss Budweiser again, this time in a straight up match. Seems like a 10 - 15 second lead. T58s turn 6,000 pound watercraft into 200 MPH rockets.
This is like watching a six year-old kid, in Boy Scouts, who spent a few hours making his derby race car v. the kid who has his dad build his derby car and added lead shot in the nose and electric motors to each wheel.
You are awesome man! Keep the cool videos coming.
The sound is awesome.
What a speed! almost g4(lol)! super ! thanks for movie !
WOW that was awesome! I love your vids.
What kind of badassery do we have here?? Awesome!!!
Only the baddest of asses grace the seats of these stripped down competition machines! You bet it's awesome.
That is crazy, that boat goes like 0 to 60 faster than most super cars
It takes a bit to get going from a standing start, but from about 50 mph to over a hundred seems like only a second or two.
I lovw this boat and the engine great job
Another great video, cheers Jay!
You river racers are maniacs. I dream of being a fellow maniac, one day. Thanks for the vid!
Tom D I don't think it's all that expensive to get into the FX class, and they do 90 MPH...
I've been told the engine has really good throttle response, and it looks to be on par with a piston V-8, only with more of everything.
@vinny142
After the race, I asked for the speed, and according to the on-board GPS they got to 143mph. But that was not necessarily where I was filming them. We're trying to get a bit more speed...
Amazing!!!😃💪
Great video love it thanks for sharing I just found my new hobby
And, yes, those piston boats sound awesome.
If you want the engine to run on diesel, put diesel in the tank. There you go. It normally runs on various grades of jet fuel, and there is a compensation for fuel density, but it will run on any flammable liquid.
That's a high capacity electric fuel pump being used here as a boost pump. It supplies a constant low pressure to the inlet of the on-engine fuel pump. In helicopters and aircraft, it would be inside the fuel tank and ensure the main fuel pump never has to suck or cavitate
The piston boats would hope for a breakdown in a turbine boat. The V8s are more familiar and easily maintained, so this was reasonable as their reliability was superior. I am new to this sport, and my job, as a professional turbine engine tech, is to increase the reliability of these surplus helicopter engines. In a way, this may destabilize the unlimited class, and increase the incentive to use a turbine. We shall see.
This never gets old Jay watched som many times and where she grounds and get pulled out by the helicopter !! class content
That was in the video about the Dart River in NZ. That was a crazy day.
26,000 for the gas generator; 18,500 for the power turbine, which then turns a 3:1 reduction gearbox
Thanks. Funny, I live in Indy, where Allison (Rolls Royce) calls home! They have made gas turbine engines there for years, as well as transmissions. The M1A1 tank is Allison G.T. powered, as far as I know. I have many more comments & questions on your many great videos but I won't wear you out this time! Thank you very much & regards! Darren
Just insane amount of power
SO AWESOME!
Thanks for sharing. 😉👌🏼
Holy shit, Jay. You guys walked away from those piston boats @8:10 like they were just standing there.
It´s a bit slow in the start, but then, WARP speed Mr Zulu! :-)
The rear roost shots are so amazing. Would be cool to get a flip to the front view of the bow also. Love this kind of racing. You guys are incredible.
The video you want to see is my race footage from the World Championships in Grande Prairie. There's a search bar on my channel page.
intense thst was great to watch!
The real race is for second place!
Can't get a ticket for flying so low. That turbine sure is fast. A good fit for that boat
Y'know... I gotta say here that the practical reality of the situ, is that the T58 boats leave the supercharged V-8 boats behind like they are pulling an anchor. All that matters in a race is that you win. The only thing the turbine boats need to win by miles is reliability. That's what Jet City provides them. Boat hull design seems very important, and I know nothing about that. Outlaw Eagle makes this hull, and they are running their own turbine boat as well.
