Faster than Last Year

A drive to the boat launch, a few incredible passes in #358, zipping by the dock, and a quick interview with owner/driver Bobby Clark.
Compared to a previous video featuring Bobby, the boat seems to be flying better, and according to the driver... faster.

    • Ben Lloyd Compared to a piston boat, you can barely hear it coming. All the race boats leave a wake about two inches high, and they are gone in a flash. Also, when out practicing, the race drivers give right of way, and a large margin to anyone who's out enjoying their boat. Guys like you get a lot of respect. Usually boaters wave at us.

    @alancaraway6023@alancaraway60239 жыл бұрын
    • Alan Caraway the 'jet' in 'jet boat' refers to the jet of water that propels the boat. You can have a jet boat with a piston engine for a power plant, or you can use a gas turbine, like this boat does. In aircraft, the 'jet' refers to thrust from shooting air out a jet nozzle at high velocity. These boats have no jet thrust from the exhaust, all the power is tapped by a turbine to run an impeller to squirt water.

      @lerkzor@lerkzor9 жыл бұрын
    • CacheRAM I can understand the confusion. I am aware of the mechanics of final drive propulsion, and also aware of piston engine implementation vs "jet" engine utilization. I guess my initial comment of the marriage of a "jet" final drive and a T-58 turboshaft from an aircraft was offensive to chocolate, peanut butter, and piston engine lovers. My sincere apologies!

    @grantweymouth7022@grantweymouth70229 жыл бұрын
    • grant weymouth The rules are open to anything, but the boats need to be small enough to navigate the sometimes tight race courses made on the smaller rivers. The T-58 requires a hull 2ft longer than the piston boats use, and that has a noticeable effect on turning and handling.

    @jamesturner2126@jamesturner21264 жыл бұрын
    • Electric starter for the T-58. It is in the nosecone, and the electric wiring to the starter is what you saw. It takes a lot of power to crank it up to starting speed. In fact, a false start results in going for a coffee (if possible) to allow the starter motor to cool down.

  • Jay, I realise that the exhaust gases provide no additional thrust, but I'm wondering why they are directed upward and back instead of just back? Is it as simple as preventing the wash from hitting other boats to the rear, or am I overthinking it? Thanks for another great vid.

    @lazaglider@lazaglider9 жыл бұрын
    • lazaglider Yes, you are over thinking it. The design is an over 50 year old helicopter engine and that's how they were built. In most turbine powered helicopters the engine is in front of the main rotor shaft, so the exhausts can't just go straight back. In helis the outlet to the side and back and not upward and back.

      @superdau@superdau9 жыл бұрын
    • superdau Thanks Jay.

      @lazaglider@lazaglider9 жыл бұрын
    • lazaglider actually, the simple answer is that it's the easiest thing to make. The PT case has a round flange that is offset from the center axis by about 45 degrees. The actual exhaust pipe or duct is not part of the engine, and is made for the boat application. You can see that it is a simple, straight tube. Least expensive way to do it, and with that slash cut end, it looks way cool.

      @AgentJayZ@AgentJayZ9 жыл бұрын
    • AgentJayZ Thanks so much. If that was not the case, and a straight pipe was the easiest, would there be a realistic issue with hot gases affecting other boats in close proximity enough that an upturned pipe would be justified? I know we are talking about a BS situation, just wondering.

      @lazaglider@lazaglider9 жыл бұрын
    • AgentJayZ Incidentally, I've just got back from a historic race track very local to me, and they had a car running on, from what I can gather, a similar engine to those shown here. Helicopter application, anyway. Drive derived from PT/gearing. Interesting thing. Loud, rather than fast.

    @Bergstaller01@Bergstaller019 жыл бұрын
    • Bergstaller01 130 is fast for a boat, but not for an aircraft. There would be a barely significant ram air effect, but then, it's a helicopter engine. It's not designed to exploit ram air. That's for planes that go hundreds of knots. What the car people and the bike people call ram air is more hype than anything else. Jeez, now I'm waiting for a wave of puffed-up piston people telling me off.

    • preben birkeland I believe they are manually controlled by the pilot of the boat. As for a blowover, I don't think they are intended to stop one, if the boat is going over, the canards aren't going to stop it. The bottom of the hull has way more area for air to blow against, and if the bow gets that high, the crew is in for a rough ride.

Didn't know those helicopter turbines were so similar. (Living right in front of an airport runway makes for some enjoyable noises :) )

    @TheRealSiman@TheRealSiman9 жыл бұрын
    • TheRealSiman About the only (major) difference aside from the power turbine (vs. jet nozzle) on many helicopter engines (I'm not 100% sure about the T-58, maybe AJZ will decide to chip in) are more robust dust- and FOD-prevention systems, since helicopters spend a lot more time near the ground than most other aircraft. They're obviously smaller than most aircraft engines too, and as such some of the smaller ones (RR Allison 250 comes to mind) use a mix of radial and axial compressors, although the T-58, being fairly large for a helicopter engine, does have an all axial compressor.

      @MysticalDork@MysticalDork9 жыл бұрын
    • Ryan Willis I don't know that the engines are all that more robust. Engine principals are the same and a blade airfoil has be just as strong & efficient of design and shape as other gas turbines. Helicopter turboshaft engines may or may not have added FOD screens/sand filters/etc. The PT6A's on a King Air have a feature in the inlet called an inertial separator or ice door, also used on many other turboprops. This device redirects the inlet airflow in such a way that due to the abrupt change in airflow direction, heavier than air particles like dirt and ice get ejected from the flow path via their own mass and out the bottom of the cowling while the engine gets clean air. If the dirt or dust is fine enough to make it into the engine, it shouldn't be of harm. Our PT6 powered planes get a compressor wash at annual inspection time to clean out accumulated dirt. Compressor washed are a pretty normal thing. Not so long ago on older engines without the cooling air passages in the blading and nozzles, they were treated with being fed essentially ground walnut shell into the inlet while running as a soft abrasive to clean the compressor section up mostly.

Most jet engines I've seen have the air intake facing forward in the direction of travel, i tried googling this but I wasn't able to find much info on this topic. Thank you for all the awesome content, hope you're doing ok :) (Please ignore this question If you have already answered it in a previous video)

    • These boats use helicopter engines, and they travel up to 150 Mph. The "non straight-in" inlets are designed to reduce entry of fod into the engine. The ram effect of jet aircraft inlets only just starts to begin at speeds around 150 Mph. A healthy splash of water going into the inlet could cause damage, so the inlets are designed around preventing that.

    • You should have a look at the designs of the early jet engines from the 1940s, which used single stage centrifugal compressors. Some models used double sided compressors - essentially one centrifugal disk backed onto another like a mirror-image, to get twice the volume of air through a single rotating compressor disk. In order to get air into the backwards-facing side of the compressor, this design had half of the air intake also facing backwards. It may seem as if this shouldn't work too well, and it's probably true that the forwards-facing side of the compressor effectively got more air through it when the aircraft powering the engine was travelling at high speed. But since both sides of the compressor fed into the same discharge tubes and hence into the same combustors, this probably didn't matter too much. Besides which, those early engines certainly worked well enough, despite being somewhat inefficient by modern standards.

    • I would imagine this also has the effect of a cowl intake if its been done right. So intake isnt going to be much issue

    • @@lloydevans2900 My dad's jet boat uses a conventional motor (327 out of a 60's Corvette) and dad would actually turn the intake backwards because it worked "too well", sometimes. In other words, your explanation made sense to me because somehow air makes it into an engine without having to direct it as much as a person might think.

    • @@matthewmosier8439 Back on solid ground, some cars have ram air intake scoops too, though I have always wondered how effective these could possibly be for most speeds - they seem to be mostly for show (because they look good), more than anything else, though they do probably add a bit to the forced induction down a straight when you can get up to 100 mph or more. My only real experience of this was from seeing vintage 3-wheeler Morgans racing around some of the legacy racing tracks in the UK. Like the modern incarnation, these all use chunky air-cooled V-twin engines, slung out right at the front of the car, with the only item further forward than then engine being the number plate. In factory spec, these had a single carburettor mounted between the V, with a T-shaped intake duct feeding the intakes on each cylinder, and the air intake facing backwards. In racing spec, this is usually upgraded to a pair of independent carburettors, each feeding its own cylinder. The geometry of how these are fitted usually meant that one of the air intakes faced forwards and the other faced backwards. This doesn't make any real difference at most speeds, but when you watch these machines racing, going down the finishing straight, you can sometimes see one of the exhausts producing a bit more smoke than the other - each cylinder has its own exhaust pipe, running from the engine down the side of the car. This indicates that one of the cylinders is burning cleaner than the other, likely a result of the forward-facing carburettor getting slightly more airflow from the little bit of ram intake effect. So it can make a difference, though you have to be going at a decent speed to notice. It certainly makes a difference for piston-engine powered aircraft, which usually have the air intakes mounted just behind the propeller, so the prop wash itself provides a bit of boost to the forced induction.
