Raccoons undergo both a physical and mental change in their first years of life. Since they go from a baby to an adult so quickly, people are blindsided by the quick change. The raccoons no longer like to listen like they normally do and they become more aggressive. They aren't like your typical pet and have different needs and requirements. Raccoons are not good pets for most people. It is best to find a rehabber if you ever come across an abandoned raccoon!

Yeah hes a domesticated racoon but so was my cat and that didn't stop him from venturing out and becoming a street cat. He would come home just to eat until one day he never came home.
@@_JEBUS i don't think you understand how cat works You choose a dog, a cat choose you If the cat don't like you as a owner it's just gonna go away search a new one or stay on its own in the street, if it slightly likes you it's gonna stay until it gets tired of it, if it loves you it'll be extremely loving and could be as loyal as a dog
@@honey_skulls1237 That is completely false. The difference between cats and dogs is that cats do not get attached to humans like dogs do. Living circumstances has nothing to do with it. Cats are curious by nature and if you let them wander once they will keep doing it. That's why a lot of people dont even let them out of the house. That's also not healthy for a cat.

Congratulations on your ability to have Tito still, into his adult state. In my youth I had one as a pet, and he was never aggressive to me, as I handled him every day. I found that his friendliness did not extend beyond myself, as he eventually bit a family member and my father took him away. I agree with you, that they are basically not a domesticated animal, and the majority of folks do not have the time, or your ability to understand what it takes to care for them, like you do. Wishing you continued success with him.
They can be somewhat tamed, but they will almost surely never become near domesticated.
@@Acidfunkish That takes generations of them being pets to be engraved into their DNA
@@trident6510 which means its possible and they already are sorta slowly self domesticating partially in a way like cats.
@@Acidfunkishthat's what cavemen said about wolves
The Truth, The Whole truth, and Nothing but The Truth... well said. I have 4 raccoons left (one old, gentle male, and 3 females) and probably 10 kits I haven't seen yet. They are "sort-of-pets" in that they all know me and come to me when they hear my voice in the evening but hide if anyone else is there. They live in the wild along a creek on my property or in a barn next to the creek. I had 14 raccoons (mostly last year's kits) but most of them left when mating season arrived. I feed them 7 nights a week at 2 hay barns about 2 miles apart, but not enough to make it un-neccessary for them to go get their own food (one cup of Purina Dog food, 2 small eggs, and a small handful of crunchy Cheetos for desert). They are totally free to come and go and we have a good relationship with each other. Last year one of the mamas brought her kits to show me in a barn for about 10 minutes and I didn't see them again for about 2 months. I think of them as pets because they totally trust me and I respect them ( I keep my hands away from them). I have 4K cameras in the barns to watch them at home. NO, they are not an inside pet for everybody, not even me, and I do have the time and patience to handle one as a house pet but seeing them outdoors in their own element is more precious to me because they get to be themselves, and I can still see them anytime I want.
Google User same situation for the most part for me as well. I would rather do I keep a healthy fear of people and not get up close and personal, not even with me. People here in my state of Alabama Love to hunt them. I want them to keep a healthy distance from humans and a healthy sense of distrust.
kzhead.info/sun/gKiceNx6nX58m3A/bejne.html
Beautiful post thank you for caring
Thank you, I enjoyed reading this.
I have the same situation. I've got a mama with four kits. She had five but she's a nasty old mother and always growles at her babies and leaves them to fend for themselves. She's missing an eye so I feed her rotisserie chicken because she can't see like at all. Her kits love the chicken and eggs and corn on the cob. I've got about 8 racoons in the woods behind me. I love to see them come out at evening or night when I call them. They won't go past the wood line as they are very wild which is good. The babies are so adorable right now. But the mom fights them for the food I put out. She's a bytch. I hope she doesn't have any more babies. She's a bad mom.

The definition of having a pet raccoon is Tito falling gracelessly under the table.
A how-to video for raccoon-proofing your house would be awesome!
THANK YOU for an EXCELLENT EXPLANATION for Everyone about The Racoon. We're so Happy that Your Family has made Tito a Member. God's Blessings.
How is Thelma? Big and fat like our Tito?
I honestly respect you so much as a pet owner. I own 2 cats and it is very annoying being bitten and scratched by them, so i can't imagine having a racoon. But having my cats cute faces wqiting at my feet to get their food is 100% worth it
I think people like you owning racoons can be a good thing because it teaches us a lot. having animals close and personal helps us know more about the world around us, plants and stuff too.
Excellent video!! We fostered a week-old baby coonie (mother was hit by a car). Bad Baby Bradley was an adorable holy terror! He played with our ferret (who did the hard work of "entertaining" Bradley) and quickly discovered the joy of cookies and catfood. We had no intention of keeping the little beastie as a pet; just allowing him to become an adult and capable of fending for himself. Bradley the Butthead tore the screens off the windows so he could hang out on the roof, chased our car whenever we left home and got into all the food he could reach. When he went back to the rehabber (at about six months old) he took over the entire place and eventually escaped and moved down to the stream with a girlfriend. The two of them came up to the rehabber's house and begged food for years. He was a handful, but we loved the funny little comedian to bits! Think of a pet raccoon as Robin Williams on speed while wearing a trash panda suit and you'll get the idea.
Thank you for saying all this especially the part about they can be good pets for people that can handle it. I had a female that passed away when she was 4 from cancer. She was my best friend. Her name was Nancy. She was raised to be released unfortunately she couldn't see well and that made her unreleasable. I would never trade me time with her for anything. Thank you for putting raccoons in a good light but also showing they don't make good pets for most people.
I’m so glad to see you have put in the proper time, research, care, and effort in order to raise Tito! He seems happy and very loved.

I think its really good that your addressing all these points for those who don't realize. From all my research I've done on my own it does take a lot of extra responsibility and work to have a Raccoon as a pet and you got to be really ready for that. I think you're a perfect example of a great Raccoon parent ^.^

It´s great to see that level-headedness still exists. I enjoy your videos because I like racoons and because you have this really reasonable and reflected approach to them as pets. And you dealt with his changings wisely. All the best and lots of joy and fun and thanks for sharing your experience :-)

Great job, very thorough & entertaining. I like that you added the relief point that there can be a light at the end of the tunnel. Knowing that after the cute stage, you mainly have to deal with 8 months to a year of chaotic frustration. Then you can get your sanity back !

Very good information. Thank you for sharing this with people who might think about making wild animals into pets. You're correct about the level of care they require, and not everyone is able to give them what they need. I wish more people thought more about the animal's needs than their own selfish desires.

Thank you for this video. Raising raccoons is a lot harder than it looks.
I’ve been thinking about getting a raccoon in a couple years, they’re such smart animals and some of them have such nice personalities, it’s like where some hamsters just sleep all day and don’t play meanwhile some are so playful and and will notice you as someone they trust. I’ve been doing research for some time now. This video is so helpful. :)
Thanks for the great lecture. My entire family loves Tito.

Thanks for the info. I am currently deciding on whether to keep the cutest little bugger who is just reaching 2 mos or give him up. I am leaning HARD towards keeping. Keep the good videos comin...🐺
A buddy of mine had a raccoon for a pet and the little guy was adorable but yeah he played rough. But what I found funny is he slept in my buddies room and when the alarm clock would go off he would go around and slap everyone in the face me included as I was sleeping on the couch that night, and jump in a chair and wait for his breakfast lol. Oh and his name was Jake, and they had him because his mother was killed by a car and even they said you need to be a very patient person to have a raccoon and be very understanding.
I've been considering getting one for a year. I've tried to do research as much as possible and your videos have really helped me. So thanks for the info! It's hard to find a breeder though.

I am so thankful for you and this video. My husband and I are going to have a raccoon join the family in a year or so, and we are doing our research on it. I'm super excited and you cleared up a lot of my questions!!!!!!
Do racoons need to get annual vaccinations (such as rabies) like a domestic dog or cat would receive? Is it difficult to find a veterinarian that is willing to care for a raccoon? This was a great video, you should make this into a series talking more about raccoon ownership. It would be a really great resource on the realities of racoons care and ownership 🙌
Yep! They need annual vaccinations. It’s legal in my state to have a pet raccoon, and even then it was hard to find a vet to treat him. I have a playlist with informational videos 😊
