The stop motion of the tumbling stones walking away, the interchanging camera angles from inside and outside if the jar, the jump cuts, the framing of shots, all of it! So amazing!

    • Things used to be made with repair like this in mind all the time! :D Not anymore though... :( Most if not all Big wig execs figured out that it's more lucrative to make products that need to be replaced by the "maker", rather than having third parties (like our very talented friend here!) repair them. It's a problem that's directly caused or at least helped caused a lot of monopolization and quality degradation in a lot of industries. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future, there won't be much if any content like this anymore, as products that CAN be repaired like this aren't being made anymore, and what's left will eventually run out. Of course, as there are exceptions to everything, there will still be products that cannot be produced as cash mongeringly as most are now. While they may persist as some have today, you would be hard pressed to find these products, as they would slowly become fewer and farther in between... :(

  • A piece of advice for the future. When you need to mushroom pins like that, you can take a small drift punch like you would use for removing and installing roll pins, chuck it up in the lathe and use one of those small round deburr bits you had for your dremel and use it to make the tip of the punch into a concave bowl shape. Then you have a tool you can use to hammer those pins with and it'll create a perfect mushroom.

  • Question for the hive mind. Does anyone know of a plating technique that would/could fill rust pits on steel as seen in this project? What I envision is to be able to do two or 3 coats, sanding back down to base material between layers to eventually get back to a smooth surface. From what I've been able to glean though, it seems that there is trouble filling the pits due to the faraday effect. Can anyone point to a method or process that accomplishes this?

    • I suppose it's possible but you'd end up wasting a lot of nickel in the sanding process to just fill in the pits. Remember, you'd end up with a plating of nickel as thick as your deepest pit on the high points and then you'd have to sand all of that away to just reach your base metal with the filled in pits. As far as technique is concerned the only one I can think of would be to leave the object in the plating solution for a few hours.

    • I'd use JB Weld or some kind of high-temp Bondo-type filler, then powdercoat it.

    • @@amandak.4246 You need to fill the pits with something, and then you need to put something over the filler to hide it. That's pretty mandatory. Given this is a lighter, it's going to have to handle a lot of heat. That creates a lot of limitations. I guess you could chrome or bronze it. Not sure if you can nickel-plate over Bondo or JB Weld, though.

    • @@DominicNJ73 the problem is, that by all accounts, the plating won't go down into the bottom of the pit. It builds up around the edge and ends up creating a dome. Yes it would be a lot of work to build it up and sand it off, but some objects are valuable enough to put in that type of effort. Also when restoration of the purpose of and object as well as its function is if importance as in high heat applications, filler and paint are not an option. So the original question stands. Is there a way to overcome the faraday effect and force plating solution down into a pit to fill it up?

    • Late but another restorer I watch uses powder paints and basically uses the primer coat as a pit filler lol I think I saw another guy use some kind of paste that dries into a metal-like substance that he then files smooth
