  • It's useful for memorization to be able to recognize strong vs. weak verbs. Weak verbs have the added 't' in preterite, strong don't and must have a vowel change. There are some weak verbs that have the added 't' and a vowel change or some other change, which you could call irregular weak, and some strong verbs that have changes beyond a simple vowel change, and you could call those irregular strong. But if you know that almost all verbs follow a single pattern within their group, you only have to memorize the exceptions and that greatly reduces the memorization load. There are a few oddballs that don't fall into any of these patterns, for example the modal verbs, but they are small in number.

  • 8:49 This may be a silly question, but when you're talking about the difference in use cases between spoken and written German, are you talking about conversations vs a more formal reporting? That is, suppose I was writing a letter or emailing a friend: would I default to the Perfekt because I'm in conversation with someone, or would I use the Präteritum because I'm writing and not speaking? Thanks for the helpful video!

  • I cannot believe the discrimination that Plusquamperfekt gets subjected to, Arguably Plusquamperfekt is one of the most beautiful grammatical structures in the German language and is second to none other than the verb "Tun". It takes a lot of language skills to use Plusquamperfekt to express every situation or force it into your speech. Justice for Plusquamperfekt. Justice for Tun. Wir sind die Tun-Menschen, wir werden nicht aufhoeren, bis es Gerechtigkeit gibt.
