  • Little known fact regarding longer lenses creating a thinner depth of field: using a shorter focal length lens of the same aperture, but moving closer so that your subject is the same size in the frame, the depth of field is the same!

Tried to use this mode for the first time today and I'm over the moon with the results & differences compared to my earlier pictures. Thanks for posting these videos! I now finally understand the impact of aperture, shutter speed & ISO.

  • Thanks !! This clears up a lot of questions I have about aperture. I'm using a 70-300mm lens with Fstops 4.5-6.3 in mildly low light to get morning pics of hummingbirds at the feeder that hangs in the shade of a large tree behind my house. Distance from camera to subject is about 25 feet. The pics come out pretty good but not super crisp like I would like them to be. I'll try experimenting with smaller apertures to see what happens !

  • These are some great tips. When I started my photography journey, I bought an entry-level camera and spent the majority of my money on learning so I did a diploma in photography. The great thing was my assignments made me test all these settings and I had a professional photographer as my tutor correcting me on my settings, light and photography.

Even though I've had an SLR for some time now, I've realized how little I really used it. No more just putting it on F11 or F8 and hoping for the best. I've re-discovered my enjoyment of taking photos and my telephoto lens is no longer just gathering dust - thanks Simon.

Great video:) I've replaced the "F" with a 1 as in a (math) fraction: 1/4 is a bigger value (a bigger hole) than 1/11 Easy to explain and makes the illogical aperture numbers easy to understand and visualise.
