AN ANIMAL lover sees his two grizzly bears as family members after raising them from cubs. Jeff Watson from Paoli, Indiana has been a bear handler for more than 29 years. His bears, Bob and Screech were given to him as cubs by a tourist attraction in Georgia that was going out of business. Now seven years old, the bears live with Jeff and also form part of his educational presentations where he teaches people how to co-exist more safely with the grizzlies. Follow Jeff here:

  • “I had an opportunity to get a bear” how does one just get that opportunity??

    @Conrad75@Conrad754 жыл бұрын
    • In my family it was racoons. Lady called up my mom and said, "I have two racoon cubs. Do you want them?" My mom said, "Sure." I think the more people you know, the more weird opportunities come your way. My mom knew a lot of people. FWIW: I think the exchange rate is about 40 racoons to the bear if you go by weight, maybe ten to one if you're talking about their capacity for mayhem, and if you go by pure attitude, then it's pretty close to 1:1.

    • Similarly, I have had a small parrot for 31 years now (since he was four months old), and just like bears he will never be tame because he’s a wild undomesticated animal. I always have to pay special close attention to his body language, because he is a moody little guy whom I love to pieces, but can flip on me on a dime if he simply doesn’t feel in the mood to be lovey-dovey or if he gets scared or ticked off for some reason etc. Having an undomesticated pet requires a lot of studying their behavior, understanding it, and respect!

Even something as simple as his comment on how the "rescue animal" thing is overplayed shows that he is doing this for the mutual benefits that he and the bears get from their relationship rather than to score some points within his social circle, as so many others do. • @@HkFinn83 nope it's all correct. Animals grieve too and when you break a bond expect the worst.

    • @@hao9508 no it isn’t. Social animals can show distress when deprived of social interaction but it is is no way akin to human emotions like ‘grief’. This is actually studied scientifically. If a social animal in a zoo loses its kin they show outward signs of distress, but when a stuffed animal is placed in their enclosure the symptoms vanish. So yes they can experience negative emotions but it’s humanising to use words like grief.

  • I love this guy videos. It shows that friendships/love can exist between species. When I was in my 20s I lived in a rural part of Florida. I have seen bob-cats, deer, hogs, racoons and all kinda wildlife on my back porch. My Rottweiler adopted a deer that used to trapse thru our yard. I used to watch them play thru the windows of my trailer. Shame video camera were too damn expensive for me to own one back then
