MANY parents struggle to maintain discipline in their home. But spare a thought for Jim and Susan Kowalczik whose main charge is a huge 1400lb Kodiak brown bear. The couple look after the 9ft giant at their orphanage where they have dedicated their lives to rescuing and releasing injured animals. They now care for 11 bears, including Kodiak brown bears, Syrian bears and black bears on their 100 acre estate in Otisville, New York. Most were rescued as cubs from breeding programs or nature reserves that closed down.

  • I’m originally from Middletown NY, close to Otisville. My Dad is a mason that had to do a job for Jim and Susan around 2018. As a single father, he took me and my brother to their plot of land and I was lucky enough to get to hand feed these bears and see how gentle they really are. I was about 10 at the time and now as a 15 year old I can only remember how great of an experience this was.

Living embodiment of a real-life teddy bear! So sweet. Respect, love, compassion, and loyalty. So many people have become addicted to looking for (or perpetuating) the negative parts of life.     • @@metroplier2670 Its worst actually, when you realize that animals are so much more vulnerable than other humans, the precious life of an animal become more important. And the sentient aspect of animals with their loves, hates, fear and etc., makes you more responsible towards theses guys. A domestic cat/dog/rabbit... dying, ill or suffering, I think its more terrible than a baby human, because the world is adapted to us, its usually no big deal, and they will grow, but animals stay vulnerable from day 1 to the last days.

The Kodiak bear is beautiful that all of your bears are beautiful. It made me sad when you were at the cemetery for the Bears that had passed away and brought tears to my eyes. Animals can be as close to us. If not closer than humans again, you’re a Kodiak bear and all of your bears are beautiful.     • Bears are pretty intelligent creatures so they can sense and appreciate the deep connection that this couple has. Sure, that danger is always there but it's all about how long you train, how they have been raised, and understanding how the relationship with the animal works. The more dangerous the animal is, the harder you need to work to achieve the relationship and do you're research.

    • Bears are primarily brawlers, not ambush predators like tigers so they don't get the pounce instinct that big cats do when they see a person's back so bears are much less dangerous overall. The bears would probably only hurt him if they go too far with playing since they may not know their own strength.

  • The key part of this video is that they are passionate but also have a place dedicated to the bears.     • @Lego man if they get a disease like rabies than yes they will My caracle was blind the moment of her death and was clawing everywhere to find me and crying out for me I got a gash from a claw strike but then she pressed herself against it before she died
