Sony X95L Review: Chasing OLED with Less Zones vs Samsung & TCL Mini LED TVs

2023 ж. 31 Шіл.
228 831 Рет қаралды

We review the Sony X95L Mini LED TV, comparing it vs the Samsung QN95C, TCL C845, Hisense U8K, Sony X90L & LG G3 OLED in many aspects of picture quality.
Our review sample is the 65-inch Sony XR-65X95L, but our findings should also apply to the 75-inch BRAVIA XR-75X95L, and the 85-inch XR-85X95L.
The Sony X95L, Samsung QN95C, TCL C845 & Hisense U8K all use quantum dot technology, and so can be classified as "QLED"; whereas the Sony BVM-HX310 & BRAVIA X90L use PFS phosphor LEDs.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by UK electrical retailer Crampton & Moore. If you're thinking about buying a new TV, even if it's not the Sony X95L, please support this channel by considering buying from them. Call 0113 244 6607, or click the link below for more details:

  • many people too often get lost in the tech specs and miss out on the bigger picture. That's why reviews like this are really important. Anyone can pull up two spec sheets and look for the bigger number, but having an expert put them side by side is far more valuable information.

  • For those kegels, don't forget the reverse kegel exercises when you do them. It is the reverse kegel that unlocks perfect control. And relaxes the tightness and extra strength you get from the regular kegel. The regular kegel gets you stronger bloodflow and greater force when release. When you get a really strong reverse kegel control you can halt any release at will.

No Company comes close for me, no Samsung, no LG in 2022 (i don't know this year) with upscaling from lower Material. Maybe Panasonic. The issue that i have, i have the same not homogene Panel like this in this Review, maybe a little bit better. HDR and 4K Material looks stunning, and that said from someone that have the 950H in 65 inch, also that have a good picture quality, but the upscaling is much better with this tv and that with a bigger screen and lower pixel density the Panel looks 2 classes better. My opinion to this TV.

  • I think being able to see the same content on the reference monitor and the competing TVs made it clear that the X95L is better which is shocking given the smaller number of dimming zones. This is an incredible review of all TVs in the comparison. In the US, the X95L only comes in 85 inches. Is there a plan to review the step down model, the X93L? I'm guessing its performance falls between the X90L and X95L but where does it fall compared to the competition?

What a great comparison! 👏 I really am impressed with the low APL/shadow detail performance of the X95L. It comes as no surprise tho, as Sony made it, and it’s been a strong suit of theirs for years. What I like about Sony the most, is they’re pixel peepers like us. Nit pickers per say. They just have a way of addressing image quality that jives with me, as I’m after accuracy and the best image quality. Which correlates no matter how much people wanna disagree…

I have to admit, even as a bit of a techie myself, I fell for marketing and believed more zones automatically meant better HDR performance. There is clearly more to it than that, and obviously the backlight dimming algorithm plays a very large role in overall performance. So again, thanks!

    • @@blackcaesar8387hisense and tcl trash marketing to the mainstream that doesn't know w tf makes a good picture so they attach to specs and just those specs they understand like peak brightness but don't bother to look into how peak brightness is lower the smaller the window size which f ks with the eotf completely where peak highlights aren't peak highlights anymore and end up being less bright or just as bright as other parts of an image because they boost peak brightness in 25-50% window sizes to appeal to the mainstream that don't know any better as well as eliminating blooming which again is the extent of the mainstreams feeble understanding of tech. How much value are these tvs really when all you're really paying for is good sdr and half done hdr. The quantum dot layers are cheaply done too, producing very noticeably less color than pricey rivals. Mini-leds are much higher in zone count on these chinese giants but they're distributed evenly across the panel so there isn't much benefit to zone smoothness like they advertise (cheaper for them) and the algorithm of aggressive blooming suppression dumbing down the tvs true capabilities. Don't even get me started on the poor effort of maintaining accuracy with different window sizes, even samsung doesn't do it. Lcds are a scam more than they're worth in general.. oleds might have increased in cost a lot, but against how bad these lcds have become, the cost is now somewhat justified.

I know for example, Game or Graphics mode supports Chroma 4:4:4 etc but what doesn’t it have? do the other modes not support Chroma 4:4:4? I just can’t seem to find any official documentation describing the features of each picture mode. Would you have any more tips on ideal settings when using this TV with a PC and high end NVIDIA GPU? I use motion handling software called SVP (smooth video project) to control any unwanted stutter (using subtle adjustments, not to the point of soap opera), would you recommend this over the built in TV motion interpolation settings? • I used to think this too, even disabled local dimming on my old TV and just put up with crap black levels as I hated the obvious zone switching/bloom But now I have a TCL C835 with 360 dimming zones which compared to new models is practically nothing.. and holy hell it blew me away Sure it struggles on star fields as expected but otherwise handles zone transitions beautifully, even scrolling white credits on a pure black background looks amazing. It's significantly brighter than my 55B9 OLED that I use on PC too, but for now the OLED still wins for colour saturation and especially pixel response. VA smear is not something I can go back to, especially given how much worse it seems to be on large displays compared to regular sized PC monitors.. But, that said, in a few years when I eventually move beyond this 2019 OLED I am likely leaving OLED behind completely

I can't see any blooming, and it's so good that the scene looks much better than my 83-inch G2 and 55-inch a90j. This is across the board for me. It's extremely rare when you see any light come in the light bars(as in maybe one show I saw on HBO) and the pop is incredible. It's me favorite TV I've ever experienced and I work in the industry. Note I have the 85-inch, so it's possible it has less blooming, but it's not noticeable. Nothing like is shown, but the camera is overexposed, so even the 65 won't look like that. Amazing TV for those considering.

However, during a blind watching TV test at MWave, the qm8 was the people's popular choice. Even when there was an G3 there. I'm not saying I would have picked it as my choice, but it does show that the tech has come a long way. I've never watched this side by side against the new G3, but my x95l looks much better than my G2. I haven't had one OLED fan(myself included) disagree while seeing them together at my place. Note, Andrew Robinson said he picked last year's Sony x95k over the C2 for his main tv, and now he has the x95l. Shane Lee just picked the x95l has his main TV, so there are other examples of TV reviewers picking it. I think many of us have biases and never like change, so many won't believe it or give it a chance. I'm a very open-minded individual who just loves tech and can only share my experience.

I think in my country Sony stocks very few x95L models - more OLEDs and X90s

I had the chance to have it at my home for two weeks and it was very good to the point that I belive it would come very close to the X95L exept for maybe upscaling. Motion was oaky but sony's is not perfect either. I did have a chance to record lumes on the UX and was able to see 3200+ nits on some small specular highlitghts found on the spears and munsil UHD benchmark disc. I did see blooming on the UX when viewed 20deg + but I also see it on the sony X95L so to me they are comparable.

  • Hopefully you'll do another dedicated video comparing the X95L to various OLEDs because in your side-by-side comparisons it actually looked closer to the reference monitor in dark scenes than any of the OLEDs you've shown in these type of comparisons. As you know, many OLEDs either crush some shadow detail as shown in your Revenant clip or raise it above reference like on the Sony OLED models. You could also show the advantages that these type of LCDs have on dark uniformity (lack of vertical streaking) and the cleaner dark presentation without adding noise or dithering present on OLEDs. Thanks.

Though, I do with that number of zones was a good measure because it's very difficult (without great reviews like Vincent's) to know what mini LED performance will be like across brands and models.

  • So Vincent, with your greater in depth knowledge, would you say that size trumps quality? Would you for example, opt for the 98 inch TCL C735k over the 85 inch TCL C845 or one of it’s A brand competitors? Or would you opt for a 77 inch premium brand OLED which often retail for more than the 98 inch TCL. I’ve watched you review all panel technologies and sizes and I know they all have their caveats compromises and virtues. I appreciate that final choice of tv is influenced by the viewing environment, but I would be intrigued by your ultimate choice. Keep those videos coming and keep up that sense of humour.

  • I use an older sony 900e and in bright daytime conditions I have no complaints, but night time viewing with subtitles on and the lights off it shows the limits of LCD even with a high native contrast VA panel and FALD. The x95l hasn't solved this problem, but it has certainly raised the bar. I do think OLED will become reliable enough and bright enough to render QD FALD LCD sets obsolete but not for a few more years at least.

  • Does this model support 60Hz BFI? Older Sony models only supported 120Hz BFI which was unusable for 60 fps content due to image ghosting/duplication. Only way to use BFI on 60 fps content was to also enable smoothing to upconvert this content to 120 fps. But smoothing comes with interpolation artifacts and isn't useful to 60 fps gaming. Thanks.

  • The local dimming algo superioirity of Sony goes back well over a decade. I still have a W905 that for bluray/1080p gives many a modern TV a run for its money. The beauty of Sony's dimming is that it can barely be seen working and is super consistent, this is essential for not getting pulled out of content for me. A hint of bloom around very infrequent subtitles is nothing in the grand scheme

    • 2017 to 2022 would have to disagree with you there my friend.
