  • My wife is from Slovakia, and I have been there many times. Of course I have visited all of her extended family, and wherever you visit you are always expected to join the meal. The most important sentence I learned real early on was this: "Ne tak vela, prosim!", which means: "Not so much please!".

    @plusfastvn@plusfastvn2 жыл бұрын
    • Meals are very important in Slovakia and we usually cook a lot of dishes. That's why "Nie tak veľa, prosím!" is a good option. You could also say: Takto stačí, ďakujem! (It's enough, thank you! ).

  • As a speaker of a southern slavic language (bosnian) I always thought slovak was the most similar to us out of all the other west/east slavic languages and this video made it more certain for me. So many words are similar or same. Others are same but slightly different meaning. And what's most fascinating is the grammar. For example 2nd person singular verbs also end in -iš/-aš, and plural you add -te to that. I find that really cool. Hope to get some time one day to learn slovak

  • The Slovak language is almost entirely based on the Hungarian language! An example: ice cream in Slovakia zmrzlina. zmrzlina-zúzmara (in Hungarian) lichen, which rime in English... There are many, many such words. Linguists say: I didn't invent it! Since Hungarian is an ancient language and Slovak is very young, the other way around is impossible!

    • Thank you for your comment István! Actually Hungarian and Slovak language belong to different family of languages and they are not based on each other. Slovak is a part of the Balto-Slavic languages and Hungarian is a Uralic language. But for sure Slovak has borrowed many words from Hungarian for the centuries of linguistic exchange. It is really fascinating! :)
