Pax is a tiny float home that was lovingly restored and renovated by Jason and Cayley over the course of a year and a half. It was one of 25 boats built in Victoria, Canada for Expo '86 but it had fallen into disrepair. With some incredible woodwork and craftsmanship by the pair, respectively a shipwright and a carpenter, it's now an absolutely stunning 1 bedroom home on the water!!
You can follow Jason on Instagram here:
/ wood_and_wind
The houseboat is packed with neat features: a head with a composting toilet and a livestock trough bathtub, a chart table, a bright galley, a handmade curved cedar dinette, a storage staircase, cozy sleeping and relaxing lofts that are connected by a catwalk, and a ladder that leads to a rooftop deck.

I could do build on much of this type project, but by myself I'd lack will to see it through vs these 2 people did. I live near the water, see great project boats every week, then head over to the freeway to rejoin my usual day..

Marble craftsmanship and stone work adorned every inch of the place. Precious gems where placed into the ceiling simple to just catch the light. • @@NotALotOfColonial_SpaghettiToG Housing prices are completely out of control all across the US, and I really feel for young people just starting out. It’s especially hard for people with physical disabilities too, as we have very specific requirements for independent living. I could never live with a loft or ladder, spiral staircase, bathrooms the size of a closet, kitchen with no low storage, and more. Even a level parking space isn’t a nice to have, it’s a requirement for safe loading/unloading my chair from my vehicle. I know I’m very lucky to have a house I can live in with just minor modifications and I’m so grateful. You’re right, reasonable housing should not be out of reach for the average person. We are messed up.

My chair doesn't fit into my bathroom, but I use crutches in there. I was just amputated below knee Feb 5th, and was house-bound for a year before that. I certainly will never have a ladder, spiral, etc (even the four steps up my walk I still need crutches while wearing my leg.) Living completely independently seems impossible. LOTS of mosquitoes, pontoon maintenance (thats alot of time and money), the cost to store it during off season, a place to dock when your going into town to stock up, a place and money to empty the poop tank, where to get fresh water?! Also, this is common sense but some people don't get this, u have to know the lake your on. Not every rock is marked and once that pontoon gets a hole u better hope your close to the landing. If your ever interested in renting a houseboat for a weekend vacation lmk, I know a few resorts that rent them.

  • Visually, the fitting out and refurbishment looks fantastic. I love the fact that it looks light and airy and there is great use of space and storage! I like the amazing things you have done with wood, and fitting out, keeping the space uncluttered and yet retaining very much a homely, welcoming space. In the UK boat homes on inland waterways (and I appreciate this isn't the UK and its coastal) require at least one fire detector. Certainly if I were living fulltime on a boat I'd make sure I was fully kitted out with health and safety, smoke/LPG/CO detectors, in the galley, fire blanket, extinguisher and first aid box. Its an easy win, because they're not expensive and easy to fit (five minutes!). I would also suggest a handrail to catwalk particularly where you are above the galley, sorry but I feel thats an unnecessary risk otherwise. Its one thing to lose your balance and jump down onto the counter top, its another when you have something hot to land into!

    • @@TheMoonRulesNo1 it is nice but I wouldn't pay anything like that much for it. Could have a new one built for less, bespoke.

    • @@angr3819 significantly less. I very nearly purchased a 27' sailboat with all live aboard amenities including a runabout for tooling around the harbor for 2500. Granted, it would have been cramped for more than 2 people, but it was fairly ideal for living, and the benefit of actually being able to sail it in the open ocean.

    • @@TheMoonRulesNo1 Sounds ideal for a single man. Especially a young man with no ties. Houseboats might look good but unless they can move then may as well live on land with the convenience of being on the mains for everything and perhaps a bit of garden. I wonder what stopped you buying it?

      @angr3819@angr3819 Жыл бұрын
    • @@angr3819 typical craigslist flake. The guy was living in San Francisco, and the boat was moored in Ventura harbor. Every Friday for about 6 weeks I'd get a hold of him to see if he was going to be in Ventura, and every week he said he'd be there Saturday, but come Saturday he was a ghost. I had the cash, I had a line on the parts I'd need to get it up to snuff, and I had a slip lined up in channel islands harbor with cable/internet, and utilities, but he just ghosted me every week. Worst part is I could have sold the runabout for what he was asking for the whole boat. It would have cost me around 6k to fix the issues, and get a fresh coat of paint on the hull, and I'd probably have been writing this comment from the harbor.

  • This guys and his partner are proper artists! Beautiful stuff! I'd just put a (recycled) fishing net/hammock above the kitchen space that he said they wanted to close off and put a bench.

  • Thank you for this wonderful tour Jason. You and Cayley have made your craftsmanship shine through on this project. True artisans.The nice thing about your previously occupancy, is being able to share the on board experience to a potential buyer, in addition to transparent renovation history. The use of space is excellent. We are land locked farmers in New Hampshire, but I can appreciate waking up on the water with the lull of the tide and the rising sun 🌅
