  • I'd love to see what that "crankshaft" is used on. It looked more like a giant camshaft. My only real concern was seeing the bearings rolling around on the dirt floor. Regardless, those guys did an amazing job considering their working conditions etc. Pakistan would be a much more prosperous world-player if the government worked as well as this team. I worked as an oilfield drilling electrician in Quatar UAE. I learned all about ingenuity and how to "get things done" from my two fellow electricians, Mr Jacoob & Hadji from Karachi in Pakistan. In 1977-8 I was a drilling newbie, and they saved my ignorant ass every single day. I was ashamed that my salary was 5 times theirs, but they still treated me with the highest respect, which I greatly returned. God bless you Jacoob & Hadji.

It's ignorant racial snobbery, plain & simple. I hope you have a beautiful blessed day, Jack. Cheers from S.Louisiana USA.

    • Thank you for your appreciative comments, I agree that it's very easy to criticise what appears to be their crude and laughable methods but they are using basic engineering methods of applying heavy directional forces in the safest way that they have available. I'd like to think that just by watching this video a few westerners have already been 'educated' I had a similar humbling experience to you when I was installing British built heavy machinery in Karachi in the 1970s. Despite having hardly any lifting equipment they taught me how to make do with what was available. Hat's off to your Mr Jacoob and to your Mr Hadji.

They welded & turned the journal, which leads me to believe the inner bearing race had spun on it, yet they re-used the same bearings (after rolling them around in dirt, of course). Wouldn't the inner race be scored if it had spun enough to destroy the journal ? I think Pep Boys keeps those bearings in stock. 😆

    @immike1945@immike1945 Жыл бұрын
    • Bearing races are very hard, the shaft is softer. Vast majority of damage will be to the shaft. The shaft was built up enough to make a fair interference fit on the race ID, so at equal temperatures there won't be appreciable slop. "Perfect job"? Of course not. But it will do what it's supposed to for quite a while. It's a crusher not a jet engine lol

    • The journals for the outer bearings were worn, when they first removed the bearings you can see little dots on it, that is where on a previous repair they had peened the journals so the bearings would be a tight fit. Obviously the peening did not last, how long this repair lasts is unknown without at least a semi accurate interference fit.

  • I love these videos and am impressed with the ingenuity of the workers. That being said (and throwing safety to the wind - lol nothing says fun like steel toed sandals) I am wondering why (since they build the same things over and over) why they haven’t built a hydraulic floor Ram for inserting and removing the shafts. It’s not like it would be in the way. Even a large jig with a porta-power would be an advantage. I just see a slip and a hand landing in between the flying ram and the shaft. Yikes! Anyway, I’m used to seeing that on these videos. They make do with what little they have. Recycling at the highest level - tip of the hat gents. Thanks for sharing.

We would install hydraulic fixture, and activate hydraulic pump which also had a 25 foot hose. We simply just push the button and watch the shaft come out. As for safety violations in Pakistan, good thing they don't have OSHA, the shop will be closed down for sure.

      @TOONMAN200@TOONMAN200 Жыл бұрын
    • Its about their work not the dress code. No one shouting ordering something. The supporting crew knows how to follow up and they finished the job together. If you put safety gear on those workers they are most likely to get in an accident. These people are tough living hard they are more likely to die from gunshot, stab, motorcycle accident, brawl or drunk driving. Its not like in western countries where at age of 50 they start to get sick then complain much like the world owe them entitlement issues. While most equipment would just be sold if the repair cost or replacement part is too expensive. Which is not a good practice as the devaluation affects other equipment. You order brand new then resell it cheap to other country then just buy again new ones. Too much reliance on tools would make you an unskilled worker just pushing button.

I worked in the Tool & Die trade years ago and still keep my hand in machining in my small home workshop so I have an immense appreciation for what these skilled mechanics are doing. They got that shaft running true in the lathe without a dial indicator and picked up the screw thread for the retaining nut. And they nut went on and looked like the fit was perfect. That battering ram is obviously a standard tool with how mushroomed the end it. They have mastered the art of using it the way they do.
