We installed G3X Touch firmware v8.91 and try out SmartGlide. Let me tell you, it's way cooler than we expected and will certainly save someone's bacon some day.
0:00 - Quick Intro
1:11 - Activating SmartGlide with no airport in range
2:17 - Activating SmartGlide with Sauk (91C) in range

  • Thank You too much for sharing with Us that great feature from Garmin. Great panel on your Aircraft. It is my dream panel on Grumman AA1. Someday!...

  • Hello from Minnesota! Really great video. I had heard that Garmin was coming out with but really cool to see it work.

  • Thanks for showing this feature! Good to know that it brings you on top of the middle of the runway, I would have expected, it brings you to a point a mile out and maybe 500 high of the runway and heading straight for the runway. Maybe next release... not complaining, an awesome feature.

    • It checks the wind and brings you to the approach end of the active runway. I figure it’s safer to get you as close to the airport as possible to optimize your chances.

  • I liked that you didn't edit out your "non-perfect" emergency landing. It reinforced the need for people to practice this again and again. And it normalizes decision making during practice runs when things aren't perfect.

    • Yeah, the first few were great, of course the one I'm actually recording isn't :-D Way too high and didn't feel sufficiently coordinated to slip it in.

  • Very cool. Sold me on that feature.

  • Impressive feature! And, coupled to the autopilot, goes to and maintains best-glide speed? I'm floored that this is available for E/A-B aircraft.

    • Yeah, it’s pretty awesome. The first time I triggered it I was stunned with the call outs, feels like living in the future :)

  • Thats awesome. Do you know if it is already available for certified g3x touch?

    • No, the watercooler talk suggests November/December for Certified installations.

  • Thank you for the video. I am curious with multiple airports in glide range if it makes different choices. For instance, does it prefer Towered or Controlled Airspace, or avoid them? Does it go for the longer runway or harder surface with 2 choices with a shorter dirt runway closer?

    • I believe that’s configurable but let me check it out and get back to you.

  • Guil, great demo. 1) Is the "double ring" just the width of the green ring's "thickness"? 2) How did Smart Glide know what your best glide is? 3) I heard a "1000 foot call out". Is that part of smart glide or? (usually only get a "500" call out).

    • 1 - You can actually see 2 concentric rings vs just a single one. 2 - Figuring out your best glide is usually part of the Phase1 testing for experimental aircraft. You then input it into the G3X configuration. 3 - This is new with SmartGlide.

    • @@BuildFlyGo Guil, tnx for the info. Do you know where in the G3x Config the Best Glide is updated? I likely have it done by the avionics guys, but I'd like to check. Off to Tucson today for my IFR - 10 day intensive. I'll keep you posted, Tnx!

    • @@scottstolnitz8918 Not off the top of my head but likely have to boot into config mode to set it. Take a peek at the current installation manual, it's in there somewhere :)

  • Awesome feature of the G3X.. I find it pretty annoying though that Garmin would require you get a new Xi navigator for certified aircraft to make smart glide work, when you only need the experimental G3X for experimental aircraft. Nothing wrong with my newish GNX375 navigator from 2 years ago to warrant replacement. Ugh. Would think if this was a safety feature it would be available on either certified or experimental without needing any additional equipment, which it obviously doesn't need.

    @Tetra84@Tetra842 жыл бұрын
    • I'm sure this isn't Garmins doing but a certification/regulation issue. Maybe in the future they will be able to have it on the certified G3X.

      @BuildFlyGo@BuildFlyGo2 жыл бұрын
    • @@BuildFlyGo one can hope.. you're already paying a ton more for Certified equipment, would think that feature would have been included with the price hike.

      @Tetra84@Tetra842 жыл бұрын
    • It's a new feature Garmin is adding for free to the system. Functionality generally comes first to the experimental side and later goes through certification. Give them time.

  • I thought smart glide made radio calls for you, squawked emergency and performed the landing in the Official Garmin video.

    • I’m what way? I’d never heard about that product until you mentioned it. Looks like it does similar but can’t control the autopilot?
