Bronco, Rivian, FJ40 and Jeeps Driving in Deep Snow | Oregon Backcountry
Join us on an exhilarating snow wheeling journey at the base of Mount Hood, Oregon. Our diverse convoy, ranging from a classic 1974 FJ40 to a modern 2023 Rivian, tackles the snowy trails of Lola Pass Road. Experience the thrill of fresh tracks, challenging terrains, and a close encounter with law enforcement!
Every vehicle performed well and was able to make it off the trail in one piece. The 2023 Rivian R1T surprised us with it's high level of clearance and ability to slide over obstacles. It did get stuck at one point but luckily the FJ40 had a winch equipped and was able to quickly solve the problem.
The Metal Tech 4x4 Ford Bronco performed great with the 37" Falken Tires and Dual Radflo Coilovers we had equipped. Also showcased are the new 4 Door Frame Mounted Sliders that we released earlier this year as well as our Front Winch Mount Bumper and Rear Swing Out Bumper which are currently in the works.
The classic FJ40 might have been the most capable out of all these vehicles! Let us know what you think in the comments!

So I dig the relaxing music. Also that Rivian did pretty good considering the long wheel base and weight
The rivian would benefit from offroad tires for this
maybe a little more ground clearance for the deeper snow. Not sure if they can be lifted just a small amount.
@@Rvoth70 Height can be changed on the fly. I can't tell if this is either high or highest setting, but it's as high as the Bronco, just longer.
I Agee with you that they probably did not have the proper tires for the Rivian
@@Rvoth7015 inches is pretty dang adequate.
yes, but it will cut the range. If one really needs something to really go deep outroading better a well-prepared Bronco for example. The problem is that the Rivian is so good outroad (search Rivian vs Gladiator you may like it) that one forgets that is not intended to be a dedicated 4x4 but a lifestyle/adventure vehicle. It drives you to places to enjoy, the ride is not the objective.
The Rivian did better than expected; it would be interesting to see it with a more aggressive set of tires.
Seeing the Rivian out there is 🔥🔥 Its awesome to see such a quite peaceful off-roader. Like a deer just moving through the snow lol The traction control must be nuts on that thing. Would love to see one on bigger tires.
Really relaxing to watch- great editing. I like your style. I do Lolo in the summer on dual sports. Fun to see it this time of year.
Much appreciated! 🤙🏼
Wow, awesome video!! I love snow wheeling!! Really excited to have y’all involved with Broncopalooza 2023!
We are excited as well!
Rivian is one of my dream cars atm, even if its way to big, expensive and not available in EU. Throw on a roof top tent and go to Norway for an amazing vacation.
Love seeing the Rivian out there. Such a capable vehicle, stock! Any of the other vehicles stock? Great video.
I know right! It surprised us on the trail especially being the only stock vehicle.
Look really good trucks, hopefully they will come over too the Uk 🇬🇧 market.
It’s actually not that good when needing to climb obstacles. The traction control really kills the power. My friend has one here in Denver and we go off-roading at least once a month and my Toyota sequoia does a better job with ATRAC than the Rivian does. It slows us down a lot actually. But snow wheeling it’s pretty great with traction control off
@@CherokeeChief.I’ve never had issues with the traction control on mine. Grips like a mountain goat. If you need more slip, adjust the trac settings or change the off-roading mode.
@@cchallett1 have you seen TFL off roads review of it when rock climbing. Same issues Iv had with it. Just traction control killed all the power and the wheels wouldn’t spin to the correct wheel when one or more tire was in the air. Kinda frustrating and slowed us down a ton. Tried every setting it had too and lowered the air tire pressure also.
at 9:15, this is a GREAT way to get badly hurt with a winch line in the middle of nowhere
Not much will stop my ‘75 FJ40.
This is great to see these things in a real test. On paper, ground clearance, wheelbase, are easy to figure, but how it actually works is different.
I know that such driving is GREATLY at dependent on the discretion of the driver. But, that BRONCO looks attractive to me.
Rivian seemed to do pretty well
Fun to watch, but glad to live vicariously in this situation.
@7:14 into the video, there is a clanking noise, that may be from your Bronco. Mine is making a very similar sound in a similar situation. In 4wd, apply a minor amount of gas and clank, clank, clank, clank, then quiet, no noises.
Great video, would love to see another 1 of these! 👌🏾
Pleasant outdoor trip. Like!
the beauty of nature
Great video. Hope to see a Cybertruck in a video like this some day 😀
Great vid, next winter I’ll join ya with my cybertruck 😉 Much more clearance on CT from its burly air suspension.
We would love that!
This is all about the Bronco
Throw some ATs on the Rivian and it's good to go!
FJ 40 is my fav. I have an FJ Cruiser TTUE and I absolutely love it. I also have a Jeep CJ-3B. Great video guys... Great video...
Much appreciated 🙌
@@Metaltech4x4 Does it have lockers? I loved the video.
Nice!! It was an education.
Great video!!
Fact: "ONLY the RIVIAN do not need to show off or whatnot, as that's the only vehicle there with QUAD MOTOR and way more advanced technology than any of them, period."
some nice shots in the snow there
Thanks!
Great video! Love the camera work!
Yes, it was just amazing.
The fact that we pay police officers to patrol areas like that and give out tickets is INSANE
Love the fj40 I’m building one and I’m in the area great video!
Meanwhile, yesterday’s high in Florida was 88. 😂 I’ve never gone wheeling in the snow, but I imagine it can kinda be like mud: momentum and keeping wheel speed. So that dude was writing traffic tickets on vehicles… that’s aren’t on official roads? The heck…
Should’ve let the tool driving the Bronco be ahead of the group, at least if he gets into trouble it won’t affect the vehicles trailing. The way he almost slammed into the back of the FJ. But I guess there’s always that one squid in the group.
Im not in to Offroading but this video was awesome
Great video, thank you for sharing.
Great video.
Thanks!
nice video
At 12:12 that's where the rivians crab walk comes in when you have a slope where your backend wants to slide down hill
How do those falken wild peak mud terrain work in the snow and icy roads?
Even Ray Charles could have seen it wasn’t built in a garage! Did that cop just transfer in from where deliverance was filmed.
Great video. Nice to see a Rivian off road. Looks like it needs some sliders though. What dashcam were you using in the Bronco? I like the details it throws in the video.
Thanks! The dashcam is the RedTiger off Amazon. It definitely added a nice touch to the video
Just needed a defender there.
I really think Broco is the best
Thanks for the great video! How many psi did you air down?
Bronco was at 18 PSI, not totally sure on the other vehicles
They should put some meat on the Rivian and see how it goes in the snow. Those slick tires are no go
Cool video! I enjoyed seeing the Rivian R1T out on a snowy trail. Is that Rivian a Quad-Motor one?
It's a Rivian R1T not sure on the vehicle specifics
@@Metaltech4x4 No worries, thank you though!
Yes, all current Rivians are quad motor, so each wheel is powered and monitored independently. The dual motor hasn’t been released quite yet.
@@teslamike thank you Mike. I appreciate your response.
Was the steering upgraded for those tires & lift on the bronco? Do you have spare tierods?
Still running the stock tie rods on our Bronco Badlands. Yes we have spares ready to go but are yet to need them. Wheeled Moab, CA, WA, ID and Oregon for almost a year on 37's with no issue (yet I am sure the day will come).
whats your set up for the wench? looks great
That’s a Metal-tech 4x4 winch mount for 2021+ Bronco models. We make them in-house with US steel. The official release of this item will be sometime within the next few months. We also make a rear swing-out bumper and rock sliders that are currently available. metaltech4x4.com/ford-bronco/
Suitcase …air 🤙
Did the Bronco even air down the tires? Looked like street pressures.
16 psi in the front and 18 psi in the rear. Rated D, but we had great hook up. Even when I high centered where we turned around, I was able to self extract by rocking it back and forth. It hooked up.
What PSI did you guys air down to ?
The flex on bronco almost as good as on my mom’s mini van all I can say is wow !!
Was waiting for that winch line to go tight and flip you on your a** (9:17), stay safe out there!
Definitely could have happened 😂
Why was the Rivian low on charge? Started low?
Wasn't totally full going in and the cold weather just makes the battery drain faster
Нормально катаетесь пацаны
If you guys use that air compressor that hooks up to your battery so much why don't you put a battery connection on the outside of your vehicle that way you don't have to raise the hood and get to the battery. I've seen that on DOT vehicles that patrol the interstate and they need to jump start somebody they have a connection on their bumper and they hook the negative and positive up and jump start a car. As much work as you do on your vehicles that should be pretty easy for you to do.
I’d be putting snow chains on the tires
What an funny cop, “is it street legal?” Cops should know the EV space better than they do.
Revenue generating.
That cop was extremely below his quota😂 . I haven’t had a front plate in my Jeep in 20 years.
Природа по кайфу
Hi, great video. Two conclusion, the Rivian is quite something, nothing beats a well-prepared vehicle, lifted, angles, and lockers but it did just fantastic. Second: the Bronco is such a good platform. Ford took years to bring it back but it's just fantastic. Going back to the Rivian I saw a Rivian R1T vs. Jeep Gladiator (no front lockers) and the Rivan did just fine.
Is the Rivian street legal, did he build it in his garage..... Seriously, how can a cop be that uneducated about whats on the roads and that he is ticketing. Sad.
Well he is a US Forestry service, so technically he isn't a normal police officer
but I did laugh...
It was funny. The cop was working with a bunch of home built buggies so when the Riv showed up and had never seen one, he just thought it was another homebuilt. Like Josh the owner and 20 of his MIT buddies got together and built in the back yard from left over Boston Dynamics parts found in a trash bin.
@@Mark-hx3nd Hmm I wonder if one of those Boston Dynamics dogs would fit in the gear tunnel. You know maybe train it to get out an hook up a tow rope to avoid the snow/mud, or plug you in at the charger so you don't have to get out in the rain and do it.🤣
@@MikeRoeserso maybe the feds shouldn’t be policing states
So off-roading in a Rivian sucks, good to know for when my pockets get fat
That's pretty chicken shit of the forest circus cop to write tickets like that on a mountain road. I guess he has to prove something to people that he's a big shot.
Does the forest service guy have nothing better to do than give tickets for not having front plates? Normal cops around here dont stop people for no front plate anymore.
Was there a charging station out there? You know that thing ain’t gonna last doing that lol.
That 100k Bronco is absolute trash.... It hardly madenit out of an already cut trail. Give me some tire chains and I'll drive my 66 mustang up this.
$60k
Front plates are stupid
FJ all day
Don't air down while off-roading be a real ma n
That is not a cop that is a revenue generator. Stay off rhe kings land! Sad what our government has become.
Cops being a tyrant 👮🏻♂️👎🏻
hate the way the Bronco sounds.
Bronco is terrible.Rivian is ugly. Look at the Chinese 300 tank, 500 tank, haval dargo. Hawal cool Dog. In Russia, everyone is switching to Chinese SUVs.
“In Russia, everyone is switching to Chinese SUVs”. 😂 1) every vehicle you mentioned is a Chinese knockoff of a successful non-Chinese vehicle! 2) Russian citizens can’t afford to import the genuine vehicles (G Wagons and Broncos that the 300 Tank copied) and would rather drive a cheaper Chinese knockoff that they can afford to trash in offroad scenarios. 3) There’s very little logistical support in Russia for Western vehicles as compared with Chinese vehicles! So, why would you choose something that can’t be maintained when there are other (less expensive) alternatives?
, Chinese fakes will give their parents a head start. Those ugly monsters, the Bronco and the Rivian, were behind them. There is no need to be skeptical about Chinese cars. Soon you will be on them. At least look at the reviews and photos of these cars. Never Say Chinese fakes will give their parents a head start. Those ugly monsters, the Bronco and the Rivian, were behind them. Americans being at one with nature….you know tearing up the terrain polluting the air and land with copious amounts of diesel fuel freaking out the peaceful animals you know the usual stuff
I don’t think any of those vehicles contain diesel fuel… 🤔
@@kourtneypeterson9783 Dont you love when the zrussians chime in...and they wonder why there a 3rd world country.
Except the Rivian. The USA is bringing up the rear, but still switching to EVs eventually. Hope to see Cybertruck in a video like this
