Danny Garcia opens up about struggles outside of boxing | Garcia vs Benavidez Post Fight Interview

Danny Garcia opens up about his struggles with anxiety and depression with Jim Gray in his post fight interview after defeating Jose Benavidez Saturday, July 30, at the Barclays Center.
"The pressure of life. The pressure of boxing, of being a good dad... It's been weighing on me for a year and a half and I know the only way to get better is to fight, and to win. I'm a fighter this what I do, and I love to do."
Rarely do we see fighters at this level open up about such personal issues, and in a moment of very real emotions, Danny Garcia showed us there's so much more to fighters then just the opponents across from in the ring.

There are mountains, and then there will be valleys. For the everyday person, this is normal, we expect it, and are able to cope with it better. For these athletes, especially the successful ones, the money and the fame makes them feel like gods, but then a single setback can unravel them because it’s not what they are used to. Hopefully he can find joy in the simple things in life, beyond the money and fame.

(big difference from someone who gets in the ring) Danny quickly sat at the waiters table who hated him (while the waiter's back was turned) with the guys who arranged the "scare" Danny got acting skills too! He "played" the ...."So what's up now buddy!" Very well with this dude who of course swallowed his words while looking very worried about his well being in the hands of a world class fighter with many tough fights, but only few losses. After putting his hand over the waiter's heart feeling that bumpity bumpity irregular heart beat, Danny embraced the hater & let him know it was all in fun. Bottom line is...Danny is a definite champion & I believe a tough but decent human being.

  • Much respect to Danny Garcia, a true professional. Always comes in shape and prepared for his fights. I only hope his depression / anxiety issues don't have anything to do with CTE. Boxers take alot of shots to the head from an early age as amateurs throught their careers as professional. Even though Danny hasn't suffered any beatings, he has a granite chin and has absorbed plenty of shots through the years. At Danny's age (34), you wonder how many more fights he will have before he retires. I'm worried that he will have a difficult time accepting when he should retire. Alot of fighters have difficulty retiring as it defines their identity. Hopefully, he can find fulfillment in something else, when the time comes. He would be a great trainer for young fighters, if he felt compelled to stay involved in boxing when he retires

I’m so glad you came out with this Danny you probably don’t realise how many people resonate with this, need to hear this and probably how many people you’ve helped. Helped in terms of people empathising with you and ultimately talking about their feelings and getting some help. Brilliant.
