Garcia vs Benavidedz Jr FULL FIGHT: July 30, 2022 | PBC on Showtime

Two-division world champion Danny “Swift Garcia dominated in his super welterweight debut Saturday night, cruising to a majority decision victory over exciting contender Jose Benavidez Jr. in the SHOWTIME main event from Barclays Center in Brooklyn headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event. He saved perhaps his most expressive moment post-fight when he broke down in the ring discussing his struggles with mental health with SHOWTIME reporter Jim Gray, showing the authenticity that has made him such a fan-favorite in Brooklyn.
“I did take a break going through mental things, things went dark, I went through anxiety, deep depression, just trying to be strong,” said a visibly emotional Garcia. “It was the pressure of life, being a good dad, just letting it out right now, because it was all stuck inside. It rained on me for a year and a half and the only way to do better was to fight again. I’m a fighter. If you battle anxiety and depression, you can get out of it, that’s what I did today. I fought.”
Philadelphia’s Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs) has become a staple at Barclays Center ever since headlining the arena’s first boxing event in 2012, and his return on Saturday night against Benavidez (27-2-1, 18 KOs), saw him pick up his seventh victory in Brooklyn. (Watch seventh-round highlight HERE)
After runs as a world champion at 147 and 140 pounds, Garcia debuted at 154 pounds after a nearly 20-month layoff. Known as a counterpunching expert, Garcia went on the attack early and often, targeting Benavidez’s body on his way to landing a career-high of 153 body shots according to CompuBox. Garcia’s superior hand and foot speed left Benavidez trailing him for much of the night, looking to land right hands over Garcia’s vaunted left hook.
Benavidez best moment came in round nine when he connected on one of those right hands and popped Garcia’s head back, but he was unable to capitalize on the attack enough to change the trajectory of the fight.
“I’m happy with my performance,” said Benavidez. “I feel like I did good. I’m fighting in his backyard, one of the best, I took his punches like they were nothing. I thought I won the fight. But it is what it is, a loss makes you stronger.
“It’s tough, things don’t always go your way, there are ups and downs. I try to be positive, like when the doctor said I would never walk again. I didn’t let that get to me. I kept on going.”
Overall Garcia ran up a 233 to 117 edge in punches landed and owned a 31% connect rate compared to Benavidez’s 20%. After 12 rounds, Garcia had done enough to earn the decision by scores of 117-11, 116-112 and a surprising 114-114. After the fight, Garcia credited his father and trainer Angel Garcia with staying by his side throughout his battle with anxiety and depression.
“Angel was there with me the whole way,” said Garcia. “I’m nothing without this man. I thank him every day. People ask me all the time, why do I fight? I make a lot of money. Why does Warren Buffett still make money? I’m a fighter. This is what I do, what I love to do.”
Garcia also added two intriguing potential future opponents he would like to face.
“I’d like the rematch with Keith Thurman, he took my ‘0,’” said Garcia. “I’ll also take [WBA Middleweight Champion] Erislandy Lara for the middleweight title at 154 pounds.”

Those murdering body shots crippled Benavidez. Forget all the Benavidez play acting like the punches never hurt, believe me they really hurt him. Danny's defence was first class, he was very slippery and very hard to catch with a punch. He was frustrating Benavidez

    • Because everyone tells boxers they are gonna have CTE and brain damage. I've had people say to me "What do u have brain damage?" From the amateur boxing I did. Like the only Insult has when somebody is arguing with somebody who fought or fights as a hobby or profession.

      @jandro8370@jandro83709 ай бұрын
    • @@jandro8370 i used to box as well. Insulting? Yes, but is it far from the truth? Not much. In the amateurs its unlikely youll develop serious symptoms. But theres still a small percentage. Almost every boxer has a level of brain damage. Theres no way around it. Each time your head gets hit the brain sloshes around your skull. Its just that a fortunate percentage dont develop visible symptoms. The worst comes from training. And the amount of times you do sparring. Thats were the symptoms can slowly progress even worse. As fighters we need to be tough and fight through fires, but we need to seperate pride with reality and know when our bodies cant handle it and we have to hang our gloves.

    • @matthewdavidson9472 idk I fought competitively from age 12 to 25. At 26 was talking to professional promoters. Was a sparring partner for 3 different camps. Then, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to stop and get surgeries and radiation treatment. So u never know which way life will turn for u or how much time is left on earth. So I think u just do what u want and live how u want. The cancer and the treatments effected me way more than the years of amateur boxing. I was in great shape tho to fight the cancer. Mayne if I had never boxed my body wouldn't have been strong enough to beat it. Everything is relative. I coach now in the same PAL I started in and still spar and train with the kids I teach. It's all teenagers. Parents like me tho. Be cool to start my own gym one day. At 35 I feel very sharp minded. I do draw blanks on certain names but I wouldn't call that CTE.

    • @@jandro8370 hey man, congrats on beating cancer tho. I hope u reach those goals 💪🔥💯 Boxing can be one hell of a sport id say, but it changes lives as well and theres no lie to that. I just feel that we's gotta be smart and know our limits. Im all in for the pride and warrior shi, but like u said we got one life and we gotta try to make the most of it 💯. After boxing ive been focusing on other endeavors too such as jobs, building a business, charity work and getting closer with the parish. I hope we both reach our goals bro, but ur a warrior man. I give u nothing but respect for battling through those tough times. Stay up bro 🔥💪

  • Benavidez came out looking strong for 1 1/2 rounds. After that he went into 'Broner syndrome', couldn't let his hands go. Garcia couldn't believe that he was getting a free lunch, he was throwing 2 or 3 shots without much worry of a counter. I don't know what happened to Benavidez but he's been very disappointing. I think he was afraid to engage and it happened all at once. He was shaking his head and posing but not throwing punches. I know Benavidez has a bad knee but it didn't look like it was a problem here.

  • Forgot this refs name but I am sure envious of him. You can tell he’s a huge fan on top of being a professional referee. Seeing his expressions during a fight is awesome. I think he expressed once how it kinda bothers him that so many are focused on his face rather than the fighters. I know for me personally, I’m still 95 percent focused on the fight, but seeing his expression’s also adds to the entertainment.

  • Very frustrating fight. Garcia outboxed Benavidez Jr for sure. Benavidez was showing off too much; a little too late trying to win the last 3 rounds. Almost seemed like it was a gimme fight to save DG’s career.
