  • 20:05 "just take the King" -- Damn right! The way I think of it, the *real* Victory Condition of Chess is: "The game ends when one of the Kings is captured." ("Or when this becomes impossible, for any of a few possible reasons that make it a draw.") But that never actually happens! Because the rules defining Checkmate, and the ones around Check, make it impossible. Think how much more *satisfying* it would be if the Checkmated player were allowed to make some final move anyway -- one that's physically possible, i.e., one that would be legal *except* for the requirement to get out of Check -- and then the winner would get to actually, physically, capture the King. Consider the following proposed rules change: All rules about requiring you to escape Check are either deleted, or at least amended to say "..., if at all possible." The whole concept of Checkmate is then retired, or renamed to "forced resignation", and is made optional. How does this change the game? NOT AT ALL! That's the point: Every time a game ends in Checkmate, what's "really happening" is, the losing player is resigning one move ahead of the unavoidable capture of their King. So the rules requiring you to escape Check are logically redundant. Like in this example -- there's no rule explicitly stating that the Kings can't touch, right? No such rule is needed, because it's an *implicit* consequence of the more general rule that you can't move into Check. Think how much cooler this video would be if Hikaru had simply taken it in stride, picked up his King, and used it to knock over Vidit's King.

Also, because it eliminates stalemate, it changes what materials are required for checkmate. King and pawn and king and bishop checkmates become possible and a king and 2 knights can force checkmate.

  • When I was like 10 I've always played chess with my mother and my older brother and we actually had the rule that if you miss a check the opponent can just capture the king. But also you always had to say check if you put the other king in check, so this rule mainly applied when someone moved a piece that was pinned

  • 20:10 Technically. it is a legal move. just a stupid one lol. Chess rules originally were to: Capture King = Win. then it got simplified to, if you CAN capture the king on your turn (checkmate), its a assumed you will and that you win. if you can capture the king on your NEXT turn (check), the other player MUST prevent it. (As otherwise, it will be a checkmate next turn) Originally they don't need to, and when they blunder the king is when you win ... kinda the same still really.
