In the Japanese variant of chess, called Shogi, capturing the king is an option. On a separate note, I had a case in a tournament where I had been in check for about 3 or 4 moves and neither of us realised it.
What did the referee say?
@@Alexander-mh5ov The referee never got involved. Once the mistake was identified, I got out of check and we played on.

@@Alexander-mh5ov I don't remember. All I really remember about the game was that moment. I was thinking about my move when I noticed something and asked other player "how long has that bishop been there?", he said "about 3 or 4 moves, why?", "I'm in check." Since it would've been too difficult to try to backtrack the moves, we decided to play on, so I addressed the check.

20:05 "just take the King" -- Damn right! The way I think of it, the *real* Victory Condition of Chess is: "The game ends when one of the Kings is captured." ("Or when this becomes impossible, for any of a few possible reasons that make it a draw.") But that never actually happens! Because the rules defining Checkmate, and the ones around Check, make it impossible. Think how much more *satisfying* it would be if the Checkmated player were allowed to make some final move anyway -- one that's physically possible, i.e., one that would be legal *except* for the requirement to get out of Check -- and then the winner would get to actually, physically, capture the King. Consider the following proposed rules change: All rules about requiring you to escape Check are either deleted, or at least amended to say "..., if at all possible." The whole concept of Checkmate is then retired, or renamed to "forced resignation", and is made optional. How does this change the game? NOT AT ALL! That's the point: Every time a game ends in Checkmate, what's "really happening" is, the losing player is resigning one move ahead of the unavoidable capture of their King. So the rules requiring you to escape Check are logically redundant. Like in this example -- there's no rule explicitly stating that the Kings can't touch, right? No such rule is needed, because it's an *implicit* consequence of the more general rule that you can't move into Check. Think how much cooler this video would be if Hikaru had simply taken it in stride, picked up his King, and used it to knock over Vidit's King.
Wow, Levy went from Kings touching to the movies to healthcare to student loans faster than I ever thought was possible 😅
7:57 "It perished before it could make something of itself" I feel personally attacked

"Taking the king should just be legal." Ah. This significantly influences endgames by eliminating stalemate. Also, because it eliminates stalemate, it changes what materials are required for checkmate. King and pawn and king and bishop checkmates become possible and a king and 2 knights can force checkmate.

Capturing kings is how I first taught my kids to play. When I tried explaining check, it was just frustrating telling them that a move they wanted to make, that seemed to make sense, was illegal. So instead we just played a few games where they could play that move and lose. Then checks made a lot more sense to them.
Beyond beginner level, an essential aspect of the game's rules is that a player who isn't in check can never be obligated to move into check, and someone who would force an opponent to move into check does not get credit for a win.
Bros martin
Out of all due respect, kings captured is a little bit violent.
@@flatfingertuning727 If you wanted to keep allowing this rule beyond beginner play, you could make it so the stalemated player must see that and claim a draw, rather than it being automatic.
@@headr0x The historical explanation I've read for why you don't actually capture the king is that over the centuries that chess was developed, actually depicting a king being killed would have been treason.

When I was like 10 I've always played chess with my mother and my older brother and we actually had the rule that if you miss a check the opponent can just capture the king. But also you always had to say check if you put the other king in check, so this rule mainly applied when someone moved a piece that was pinned
AND HE SACRIFICED... THE KIIIIIIIIIING!!!!
Did you forget about this rule: you can’t put urself in check
He sacrificed THE KING!!!!
20:10 Technically. it is a legal move. just a stupid one lol. Chess rules originally were to: Capture King = Win. then it got simplified to, if you CAN capture the king on your turn (checkmate), its a assumed you will and that you win. if you can capture the king on your NEXT turn (check), the other player MUST prevent it. (As otherwise, it will be a checkmate next turn) Originally they don't need to, and when they blunder the king is when you win ... kinda the same still really.
I have to give Levy credit for being a great storyteller. The humans are all about stories in contrast to the robots like Stockfish.
