It's taken a while to write and practice this and then set up a recording date around my job, but it's finally here! A concert of solo piano transcriptions featuring selected tracks from Shadow of the Colossus. I've tried to include contrasting pieces and have them work as a convincing set from start to finish. Hope you enjoy. Watch all of it if you have the time and inclination - I practiced a lot to be able to get it all in one take!
The tracks are:
1. Prologue to the Ancient Land - accompanying the opening cinematic, this music captures the lonely, timeless quality of the landscape in which the story is set. It involves some very nice part-writing.
2. Sign of the Colossus - Sinister and ambiguous, this music is explained by the title. Maybe it's some recently-disturbed foliage. Maybe it's an impossibly large footprint in the hard ground. Who knows!
3. Grotesque Figures / The Opened Way - The first pair of battle themes, going straight from the first track (struggling) into the second, more lyrical (winning). These two tracks feature steady war-rhythms and lots of drums and brass in the original instrumentation. The piano can't really match the depth or volume of an orchestra but I've tried.
4. The End of the Battle (excerpt) - The moment when the lights in the colossus' eyes are extinguished following its defeat. Sad music for a morally ambiguous victory.
5. Prayer - Reflective, ambient music for the quieter points between battles. The hero has a lot on his mind, not least his dead girlfriend lying on the altar.
6. Silence - Technically a battle theme, but here I've given it the same function as 'Sign of the Colossus'; a sort of calm before the storm. A shadow moves deep beneath the surface of a lake.
7. A Violent Encounter / Revived Power - The second battle pair. These are both in triple time with a one-in-a-bar feel, giving the music a lot of rhythmic propulsion. The dissonant and sometimes rhythmically complex 'struggle' track precedes a triumphant 'winning' theme; one of my favourites in the soundtrack. Spot the memory lapse.
8. The End of the Battle (complete) - Another colossus is slain. Maybe the last one.
9. The Sunlit Earth - I like to think that this piece evokes the galloping hooves of the main character's horse. A difficult piano to play this one smoothly and evenly on - the accompaniment figures must be heard but not intrude upon the larger phrases. I might do a separate version of this on a gentler piano.
10. Memories - An afterthought. Simple and singing. Hope you liked it.

I'm amazed that you can play this music without having to refer to sheet music, you must have a brilliant mind to remember all those notes in sequence... props to Kow Otani for revealing this music to the wider world!

Yeah, Partner, all you said is so true, i dont know if you know that, but that is te essence of the games of Fumito ueda is create a special bond between player and the character , that is easy when you have a nice objective o an interested one, that is the purpose of that sort of games and is said by himself in the interview of Last guardian, i entirely invite all to watch it because there people dont understand that, this sort of games is in another level, dont is just for fun like all others, is smth more deep than that, is Connect With that world, all they to realize of that, if dont, well, surely Fumito ueda say:"Well, maybe you must play other games" XD, but really i appreciate that because is a people with conviction in that theme, and i understand it

    • +Wil Stallmann Well the composers of old wrote for operas and dances and just background music at parties, and many of the twentieth-century classical masters wrote for films. If they were alive today you can bet some of them would be writing for games, it's just another medium. Tell them that if they're being snobs!

  • I imagine that you will never be able to imagine how important this video was to me. Shadow of the Colussus is the game that has touched me the most in my life and its striking soundtrack that awoke me to music. It was then that I found this video... Your spectacular arrangement and interpretation was like a light calling me to learn piano and develop as a musician. Today, living as a result of the study of music, I come back to appreciate his work, which is always very touching and exciting. Unfortunately I can only give a single like, which is definitely not able to express how grateful I am to be able to appreciate your precious arrangement of this phenomenal soundtrack from Shadow of the Colussus. Anyway... From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much!

  • 23 minutes ago I had a random thought of "maybe somebody has piano versions of Shadow of the Colossus music" and I am beyond impressed. I've played through that game multiple times and I feel you have captured the complete journey of the game in this arrangement. Every song is placed perfectly and I truly felt like I was reliving a playthrough of it. I'm upset with myself for not finding this video earlier! I am currently teaching myself to play piano and you have reminded me why I want to play. Growing up I'd listen to video game soundtracks like Zelda, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy etc. and I've always wanted to recreate these beautiful soundtracks. I hope to be half as good as you someday, to be able to play this arrangement!

    • TheSlowPianist Its a honour to receive a repply from such an artist! Thak you. Maybe you wanna give a little check in Dear Esther soundtrack, especially the track called "Twenty One". If you wanna something more known the first Halo game intro its a great game track too, i can already hear piano notes taking place of the beautiful gregorian sing. But after SoTC soundtrack, the best OST for me is the Hitman Blood Money's Jesper Kyd masterpiece. The track "Apocalypse" its one of the most powerful i've ever heard and capture all the game atmosphere.

    • I wish I could, but it's a balancing act. Firstly between these videos and my other musical projects, and secondly of course between quality and quantity (quality of arrangement and performance, whether or not by memory, etc). But thank you for watching and I'm glad you find something worthwhile in my work.

  • Absolutely fantastic, even as I could hear the original compositions in my head not only did I hear no errors I heard a lovingly restored form of this jaw dropping soundtrack. Every accented note and loud heavy cord recreated the same power that a full orchestra could make. The quieter calmer pieces similarly emphasised the peaceful and solemn nature of the events of this game. And yet still Sign of the Colossus felt as eerie as ever. Incredible work man!

They were beautiful in their time. You are very talented my friend! I can see the spirit of divinity flowing through you and onto the keys! I mean that with all sincerity. I believe with the entirety of my being that this is what it means to do the will of God.

  • I like the play style you have, as well as showing emotion through body gestures and movement, really adding either melancholic or intense feeling. Around 7:00 minutes in, right before going into "The Opened Way" you really portrayed a strong sense of intensity giving a feeling and emotion to the music, syncing with how the notes are played aggressively! Amazing performance as you continue to inspire me to become just as skilled :D

  • in "grotesque figures" I imagine the bass as Colossus and the treble as Wander himself. It starts tensely as if the ground were shaking with the colossus' steps, then he really appears and notices. At first you get tense and don't know what to do, but soon you start to create a strategy to overcome that giant, which is when the treble starts to lead the way of the music, and the two start to merge and one can't go on without the other. until it ends. and everything becomes silent, opening the door to "the end of battle".

  • Congratulaions man! I don't have words to describe how incredible is this. I am a huge fan of this soundtrack and you're the first person I've seen that could actually capture the essence of the score into the piano. The medley is great, the combination of the pieces, everything is really great. Congratulation once again.

  • I have to say brother. My personal favorites are "The Opened Way" at 7:50 and "A Violent Encounter" at 14:20. You have my respects. You played in such a way that you somehow fuse and became one with the music and the piano itself. The practice and hardwork you have put into this has really paid off. Amazing work. I'm certain one day you will become a great piano player for Big budget movies. Well, at least if that's what you looking forward to...or if you prefer a more quiet life and play the piano mora as a hobby then either way you have my gratitude and respect for uploading such a great master piece. One thing though....I gotta admit I was a little bumped you didn't played "A Dispair Filled Farewell". But if you ever get the chance. I would very much like to hear it. I give your video and your talent a 10/10. Keep up the great work!!!!!
