  • The piano “when played great” is one of the few instruments that is extremely enjoyable to listen to by itself.

In the home, around the fire, on the stage, and even on the battlefield. The flute would be my second candidate.

  • Can confirm school kids know Viva La Vida instantly. Source? One year in high school (2009 or 2010, I forget which year), the orchestra (meaning just the strings for the record) was doing this for one of their spring concert pieces. The entryway to the auditorium was one place those of us who went out to lunch got funneled back in the building. So naturally, the usual post-lunch chatter upon hearing them practice beyond the closed doors went utterly silent, with occasional quiet singing. The whole group, including me, waiting to get back in the halls, was completely enthralled by that talent. It was especially funny to me since as a band kid, high school practice was kind of a train wreck until we got close to the concert.

We learned about the orchestra, and later went to a live symphony concert, knowing the music to be played. We studied Carmen, the opera. We were taught opera in 7th Grade. Art was instructed by a teacher who wore cowboy boots with her skirts, to class. Shop taught us tools, lumber, machines and machine safety. We made things. We built things. Not exactly culture, but helpful in life. They offered Band (or Chorus) but I dropped out. No talent. No drive. Some kids took Violin. The piano people got their training on the outside, privately. That was one of my favorite years of school. Those classes were so instrumental in f

Not a couple weeks after, they placed a lock on the piano, I cannot tell you how restraining this feels, I'm glad to see at least one school out there that doesn't oppress its students. Bravo sir.
