Siberian Tiger "Plays" With Tourists

Some interaction with the Amur Tigers at the Columbus Zoo. There are 5 in all, a mother and her four daughters. If you visit near closing they are extremely active and playful. They also have two boys in a nearby enclosure, but they aren't quite as much fun.

  • The tiger does not look away, he is focused on her as he stalks her. I like the part when she looks over her left shoulder and for a few seconds the tiger freezes-like: "I'm just a tree,"

    • In India a long time ago when tribesmen and women were being eaten left and right by tigers literally sometimes thousands of people a year they started wearing masks on the back of their head and surprisingly it was very effective at keeping tigers from attacking because instinctively they prefer the element of surprise and don't want to attack if they think your looking

    • Small cats are the most successful of all felines. While big cats are endangered, small cats are overpopulating the earth. Small cats have a much higher success rate at hunting. Millions of years ago big was always better and there were cats bigger than elephants, then they evolved smaller as mother nature determined smaller is better. I hope we don't lose the tigers and lions next

    • unfortunately, many many victims don't end up loving the "sneaky stalk mode". However, I do agree that it's pretty amazing how tigers stealthily get as close as possible while prey looks the other way. That's why people in tiger regions wear masks with fake faces on the backs of their heads

    • Greg Brown darwinism says it's just coincidence plus natural selection - those who didn't had died out, together with others who had no sharp claws, big fangs, whiskers, thick coats ... so there were once a zillion variations of tigers alone and zillions of zillions other "unselected" losers. Darwin thought the earth was bigger than the universe and "evolution" lasted longer than it too.

    • On the contrary. Do you think this tigress is so stupid she would forget about the glass, despite living there for a long time? If she had forgotten about the glass she would have banged her head against it. She knows damn well she can't get at the person behind the glass: this is just a game, like domestic cats play.

      @DieFlabbergast@DieFlabbergast6 жыл бұрын
    • It's still all based on their hunting & stalking instinct, just like a domestic cat's play is... The hunting urges they get don't care about a piece of glass, or that the mouse you are waving around is inedible and made of plastic, they just know that's what they want to stalk & pounce at... They find it enjoyable as play BECAUSE that is their instinct... I imagine they get similar kick from hunting too, considering they don't wait until they are hungry to do it in the wild... Either way, if the glass weren't there, those people would easily be dead, they stalked from behind and went right for the nape when they pounced, which is how they kill prey in the wild.

      @TheEvolNemesis@TheEvolNemesis6 жыл бұрын
    • If it was hunting, the tiger would have charged at them. I mean...it would be a lot faster and a lot more aggressive than that.

    • That is indeed part of it. These tigers are wel-fed, so what they do now is follow their hunting instinct. But as many tigers like to rub cheeks, what these visitors should do is make the appropriate move along the glass, just as they would do with their cat, and they will find that the reaction is the same (until they turn away and spray you - thank heaven for glass). I've found out myself that tigers have nice soft fur on their cheeks.

    • TotalMishap how when it's their camouflage? I'm sure when they are stalking its prey it thinks it can't be seen.

      @danielgreen7273@danielgreen72737 жыл бұрын
    • Eye contact... They can see the prey's eyes, and if they see prey looking at them, they know they lost, and they usually give up. Chasing would be a waste of energy at that point... Cats have virtually no chance of chasing down anything once it becomes aware of them... They are not built for chasing at all which is why they rely on surprise... Instinctively, they always try to come from behind, and rely on stalking and getting close enough to pounce before the prey can get up any speed. People working in the bush around tiger sanctuaries wear masks on the backs of their heads with fake eyes, that actually keep them safe by fooling any tigers behind them into thinking they are being watched.

  • I disagree with those who don't think the tiger is playing; all cats play. It is probably true that the stalking was triggered by the people having their backs turned, because it is also true that all cat play is basically hunting practise.

  • Since they know from practice they can't get at you, it really is just cub like playing at hunting. So cute. Sort of sad to, that it is a highlight to them daily. But I guess it beats getting poached. 😞

  • I seen one where a tiger was stalking a toddler and when the child stumbles the tiger lunged for the babe. Saw a weakness and pounced. Didn't give no thaught about the glass. Wild shit...
