I purchased this beautiful 1998 Bmw E36 328is before I left for my trip and the first time I tried to start it, it sounded like it had no compression, well turns out it doesn't have any compression , so lets dig in and see if we can find out why!
people treat bmw's like this and say bmw's are unreliable...
I quit watching just after seeing how he removed the valve cover..
@@franklicata175 Lol Right. I bet I could've gotten it started. 😏
Yes the cracked valve cover to a terminally ill engine. I dont know how to work on cars
@@franklicata175 was talking about the overall health of the engine though. as soon as i saw fake m badge on valve cover, he could grenade the engine and i wouldnt care
@@m3nameisjosh464 Thats another thing, its undestandable if the VC was cracked, my bad.
Oh my gosh !! My e36 had no compression and I couldn't figure it out until I stumbled across this video. I had the same problem. You're amazing! Thank you for your service.
HAHAHAHA
Would've been interesting to see if you could have let the cylinders soak in seafoam or similar for a few days. Sometimes you can restore compression this way
I heard a few people say this. I wish I had done this
Perfect break down, I just subbed!!
Thanks for the breakdown and the education 💪
Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the educational experience with this upload ! my first time looking at a neglected engine w/ some seized piston rings ! looking forward to the new uploads ! I hope you are doing good sir ! peace
Thank you man!!!
Loved the video, and learnt alot
Happy to hear! Thanks!
30 year Porsche/BMW tech here. Ive run into several M52/54s with low compression. usually around 50psi. These engines dont like to sit for long periods of time. Oil seeps past the rings.. When you try to start it, the fuel injectors wash down what little oil remains. The fix is to pour a bit of oil down each cylinder, crank it with the plugs out for 5 - 10 seconds. Take the car outside, fire it up and let it run til it stops smoking. 80% of the time it fixes the problem.
Noted!!!
Fantastic work and a really great vid!!! You make it look so easy to disassemble. How long would it take you to get the motor out if you worked on it non-stop? You seem to have done it before, and I have noticed with mine (E93 Convertible N51 engine) that the more I work on it, the faster I get at complicated jobs, like Valve Cover Replacements. But really, how long would it take you to remove an engine start to stop?
An engine from this car I can have out in probably about 2-3 hours
It would be great to see a series when you rebuild a m52b28 with the work and cost 👍
Maybe one day in the future but this was not that car haha
Samething happened to me so I swapped in a forged internals 3.0L stroker turbo build.
Great video ✌️
Thank you ben!
sick car I just picked up a decent 328i for cheap, had a cracked head, diy me got to learning how to tear it down and fixed everything up, now she runs like a dream. I hope that body gets treated well if you sell it as a whole
Body was already too far gone by the time i got it.
did anyone else cringe a little when he dropped the head on the ground? haha
Did i? Oops lol
@@m3nameisjosh464 im trying to get a 97 328i to start up after sitting 5 years ugh
I knew the car was done for when I saw those jdm stickers
Absolutely hahahah
I bought an M52 the other day. No compression. Sounded like the crank was only spinning. Soaked the rings in ATF for a few hours. She fired right up, been running good ever since
That is what I wish I did here, i bet it would have been alright
I wanted to ask your opinion on the z3 cause I just bought one that allegedly ran last year after an ignition switch replacement then didn’t start after that it, it’s a 1.9
Don’t really have opinions on z3s hahah
you said a 328is would be a winterbeater in the mid west, but in europe we dont have the 328is we use the 316 with a welded 4.44 diff
The 316 with a welded diff and full interior slides easily? Cause I’m highly considering 6 cylinder swapping mine
@@bigsax6900 not at high speeds, probably wont slide on asphalt either.
That engine just need refresh and be good to go again
man you should have done something with this lol
I've seen this exact same thing happened but the only thing that was wrong the lifters bled off from sitting and the car sounded exactly like this when cranking all he had to do was crank the car until it built oil pressure again then bam fired right up.
Interesting🧐
i would’ve liked to see if valve cleaner or sea foam directly into the piston chamber could’ve brought this thing back to life
I should have but rest of car was too far gone
“my new E36” **sells it half way into the video** 😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The way you treat your bimmer is the way it’ll treat you !
Truth!
''project''😆
Do you have a link to the compression tester?
Just harbor freight
@@m3nameisjosh464 Thank you dude I appreciate your help you just saved another M52 possibly lol
Shot motor mounts will eat fan clutch's and radiators. Ask me how I know lolol Also honestly a shame this happens to some cars too. Like they never stood a chance
Oh yeah they were shot lol
Even though I watch a lot of US bmw content it’s still soooo weird to see an iron block M52
Hahahah a common thing here!
Could it have blown the fan, destroyed the radiator piping, and overheated after being driven home? Maybe warped the head?
Ahhhh, the dreaded 13k oil change interval. A Shame.
Yesssir haha
did you verify it wasn't getting fuel?
Does it matter if it was or wasnt? That fuel aint igniting with 30psi of compression
what year is it ?
97
Yeah those pistons be boned and those rings are shot
Definitely lol
I came up with an idea of self service mahine, like an atm , where any time of the day you could suck out old oil and pump in new oil Please dont ask me about oil filtwrs, that would be a great system of self service oil change every 8000km, to make sure that this what we see in this video does not happen it would be 100 percent recyclable oil distribution omitting mechanics, like amazon for shell or BP or Texaco.. someone contact me with the right person and we can put this machine on most petrol stations in USA,refuel your car, wash your car yourself and change oil more frequently.. oilfilter Usualy accessible from top noweadays anyway
yeeeee no
“Fudge”
Fudge😩
So many BMWs, especially the V8 ones, have a reputation for being unreliable thanks to idiotic owners. The only thing that's truly unreliable in the E36 is the interior 😆
True that!!!!
Lmao so why wouldn’t you just do the compression test before wasting you time taking anything apart … 🥴
?? I did the compression test and then took it apart because I wanted to
